Be it known that I, MARTIN VAN BUREN ETHRIDGE, of the city of Lynn, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoe-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the jacks wherein the shoe-last, with the insole thereto secured, and the upper are placed and held while the upper is adjusted and secured to the insole;

and the invention will,in connection with the accompanyingdrawiugs, be hereinafter fully described, and specifically defined in the appended claims.

Figure l is an enlarged side elevation of thejack, showing its connection with its supporting-rod, and also showing the last in position with the shoe thereon, as indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, taken as viewed from the left in said Fig. 1, but with the omission of the dotted lines that indicate the shoe. Fig.

3 is a top or plan view of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but omitting the lines showing the shoe.

In said views, It represents the bed-plate of the jack, upon the under side of which are shown the ears j,which are pivotally attached to a central ear or tenon of stud i, a cylindrical tenon on the lower end of which is shown as seated in the axial bore of rod h. This method of mounting the jack forms no part of my invention. The devices arranged upon bed-plate k for securing the shoe in position are described as follows: The usual heel-supporting standard,s, is preferably formed as an integral part of said bed, while the toe-support 23 is adjnstably secured to said bed by a screw-bolt, a, which passes through a slot in the foot of said support, as shown, whereby its position may be varied as the length of the shoe requires.

Upon the upper side of bed is are formed the cars a a, in which are secured the parallel rods m m, upon which are pivotally mounted the clamping-jaws H p 1), each pair of said jaws being forced against the sides of the shoe by the cam-headed bolts 1), on which are mounted the levers v, by which said bolts are actuated, the cam-shaped heads 0 acting on the inclined or cam-like disks (1, secured to the jaws, a coiled spring being also arranged on said bolts between the jaws, as shown, and by its expansive force opening the same when they are released. The inner faces of said clamping-jaws are faced with elastic rubber to insure their perfect fitting to the contour of last to, and also to insure a firm adhesion or holding to the leather of the shbe, and yet preventing the scarring thereof. A toe-clamp, w, is pivoted at its lower end to the front standard, t, and near the extremity of its angle-arm is provided with a thumb-screw, c, to engage the insole upon last a and secure the same in position. V

For the purpose of securing the upper? or quarters of the shoe at the requisite height relatively to the top of the insole when said quarters are being drawn up and their edges folded upon the insole for nailing thereto, I haveinvented a clamp which is constructed and operates as follows: An arm, as, is pivoted at f to ears formed upon bed 70, and upon said arm are formed or secured the elastic arms y, which embrace standards 8, over which the shoe-quarters (shown in dotted lines 9) are drawn, and when arranged at the proper height relatively to the insole on last a said elastic arms are forced together by a clamping-bolt, z, or other suitable means, thereby securing the quarters from displacement. while their method of securing the quarters upon the last by driving a lasting-tack through them into the last. 1

I claim as my invention 1. In a shoe-jack, the combination of bedplate 70, formed with ears n, the parallel'rods m,journaled therein, and the shoe-clamping jaws pivotally mounted upon said rods, substantially as specified.
