Description
1954 R. W/KEITER PAINT BUCKET HANGER Filed May 16, 1951 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 10, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAINT BUCKET HANGER Robert W. Keiter, Toledo, Ohio, assignor of onefourth to Roy J. Dewey, Toledo, Ohio Application May 16, 1951, Serial No. 226,599
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to brackets, more particularly to removably attachable supports to be placed at any point along the sides or vertical bars of a ladder and provide an arm to be engaged by a bale of a pail of bucket such as used for point.
An object of this invention is to provide a bracket which self locks itself at any predetermined point along a ladder side member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bracket having a supporting arm at a predetermined point along a ladder which arm may be adjusted to extend forwardly from or rearwardly from the ladder.
And another object of this invention is to provide a paint bucket hanger for a ladder which bracket is locked onto a ladder part by the weight of the bucket with its contents.
Other objects and advantages of this invention relating to the arrangement, operation and function of the related elements of the structure, to various details of construction, to combinations of parts and to economics of manufacture, will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon consideration of the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of a ladder, showing devices of the invention mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the devices;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the ladder engaging element of the device; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation, illustrating a modified form of the stop construction.
The hanger structure includes a primary mem her or bracket element fabricated to provide a stra of sheet metal of general overall block 0- shape having an intermediate plate portion is with a pair of arms I? outwardly extending therefrom in a substantially parallel and right angular direction to terminate in offsets l4 directed toward each other.
There is thus provided a ladder part embracing C-Shaped out? or partial collar member which may be located at any point along either side or leg it of a ladder it. The offsets it are dimensioned to provide ample space 2t therebetween for the strap element to be positioned looseli about any predetermined point along the ladder 4B.
The plate portion It of the c-member carries a rivet-like element 22 centrally attached thereto, which element 22 provides a pintle for arm 2 mounted thereon and swingable thereabout, its range of swing being determined by stops or abutments 26, which stops 25 may conveniently be embossed portions struck out from the plate H! or comprise separate stop elements 28 as pins or abutment providing blocks mounted thereon by suitable anchoring means. These stops are four in number, two on each side of the pintle and arranged as if they constituted the four corners of a rectangle of which the pintle were the center.
The stops 26 are preferably proportioned and positioned so that they present a comparatively substantial contact face all for the edges of the arm 24 and allow an arc of swing therebetween sufficient to permit the arm to extend in opposite directions from the portion It. In either position, the arm abuts two stops, one engaging each side of the arm 24 (Fig. 3).
To position the hanger, the C-member is slipped about a ladder part 16, which part easily passes through the clearway 29, and the arm 2% is swung to extend in the desired direction therefrom.
A bucket such as a paint pail is suspended by its bale 34 which may be nested within a selected one of a series of hook providing notches 36 distributed along each side of the arm 24.
When the bucket 32 is mounted on the hanger, its weight causes the arm 24 to act as a lever against a diagonally opposed pair of contacting stops 26 to turn or cant the bracket so that one pair of diagonally opposite edges 38 of the arms [2 bite into the opposite edges of the ladder support l'fi to wedge lock or grip the ladder part H5 at a predetermined position.
The edges 38 may be serrated or otherwise shaped to provide teeth 69 thereon for increasing the bite or grip action of the canted element it. These teeth are distributed along both edges it of each arm l2 rendering the device reversible, providing equal utility whether placed on either side of the ladder or in reversed positions on either side, with the arm 24 swung either forwardly or rearwardly therefrom, thus providing a device from which the bucket 32 may be hung at any desired point relative to a worker occupying any step along the ladder.
The two strap like parts plus the rivet-like connection provide a bracket device of extreme simplicity and most economic to produce and yet provides a rugged and reversible construction adapted to mount any usable size container in any predetermined position along the ladder.
It is to be understood that the above detailed description of the present invention is intended to disclose an embodiment thereof to those skilled in the art, but that the invention is not to be construed as limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of being practiced and carried out in various ways Without departing from the spirit of the invention. The language used in the specification relating to the operation and function of the elements of the inventionis employed for purposes of description and not of limitation, and it is not intended to limit the scope of the following claimsbeyond the requirements of the prior art.
What is claimed and is desired .to secure by United States Letters Patent:
1. In a paint bucket hanger of the class described, a C-shaped strap member including an intermediate plate portion having a pair of spaced opposing offsets extending substantially at right angles therefrom, said ofisets terminating in continuations substantially parallel to said plate portion, said member adaped to embrace a side member of a ladder, an arm pivotly attached to the central area of said plate portion, a stop for said arm comprising a struck-out section of said plate portion positioned to be abutted by said arm to cant the Cshape member to cause diagonally opposite edges of said oifsets to grip the embraced ladder member therebetween, said diagonally opposite edges of said offsets being deformed to provide teeth to engage the ladder side member.
2. The structure set forth 'in c'laiml wherein a plurality of struck-out sections are provided in said plate and disposed about the pivotal mount; ing of said arm in a manner that at least one of said sections is abutted by the arm in either direction of its swing about its pivotal mounting.
