FIRE-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,597, dated December 5, 1,882,

To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. JAY ANTR1M,a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Fire and Burglar Alarms, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top 4or plan view of the alarm embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a'longitudinal vertical section thereof in line as Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section thereof inline y y, Fig. 2. y FigAc is a view of a modih'cation of a portion thereof.

My invention consists of an automatically' operated reand burglar alarm, the construction and operation being hereinafter fully set forth. 1
Referring to the drawings, A represents a holder for fire-crackers, cartridges, or` other explosives, A', which is formed of sections a a, hinged or otherwise connected and channeled, ason their inner faces, forming barrels B to receive said explosives.
C represents spring-pressed plun gers or pistons, which are fitted within-the barrels B at the outer ends thereof, so as to be discharged by the explosive in said barrel.` Within the holder is also a channel, D, extending at a right angle to the-barrels B, and communicating with said barrels by means of ducts b, formed in the holder. In hthe walls of the holder are vents c, which communicate with the barrels at places above or below the plungers C, so that when the plungers are in their normal position they close the vents, as shown in Fig. 3. Formed with or secured to the holder A is a shelf, E, which sustains or guides the outer` ends ot' the plungers C, and is formed with a series of notches, cl,for supporting a series of bobs or weights, F, whose necks are adapted to enter said notches, whereby the weights are retained in position, it being noticed that the notches coincide with the barrels B, and consequently with the plungers C, whereby when the latter are driven outwardly they are caused to strike the weights F and force them from the shelf E. The weightsFmay be connected with alarm mechanisms indifferent apartments by meansof cords or wires e; or the holder may be so disposed that said weights may drop on the oor of the apartment in which the holder is located, or be connected with weights which may be raised or lowered in other rooms, thev object in all Vcases being that the displacement of the weights will cause alarms.
In the channel l) is placed a fuse, Gr, which communicates with the explosives A by means of the ducts b,powder or fulminate,if desired, being placed in said channel to insure the action of said fuse. The fuse is so placed that in the event of re it will be ignited, or another burglar or fire alarm so disposed that when the latter is operated it will strike a match in proximity to the fuse, so as to ignite the latter. I may also employ acid or other material of a kind which, when liberated, will cause ignition of the fuse, said material being directed against the fuse-by the action of some other alarm, or the hand of a party in charge of the alarm, the latter causing alarms to be sounded in different apartments. When the fuse burns and reaches the crackers, cartridges, 85e., the latter are discharged, thus impelling the plungers from the barrels and forcing the weights from their seats on the shelf E, thus sounding an alarm, as has been stated'. As soon as a vent, c, is uncovered by the operated plunger the gasofthe explosiveescapesthrough the said vent, and the spring C' then restores the plunger to its normal position.
TheholderA,beingin section,maybeopened to remove the discharged explosive :and apply a fresh one in-lieu thereof, and in order to hold the sections Iirmly together for a subsequent operation I employ screw-clam ps H, which em brace the ends or sides ofthe sections or projections thereon, and reliably connect the sections as one.
It is evident that the discharge of the explosive is also utilized as an alarm in addition to that created by the falling of the weights,
thus providing a double alarm.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an automatically-operated fire and burglar alarm, a barrel containing explosive material, in combination with a plnn ger or piston also Within said barrel, a Weight supported in position to be dislodged by the outward movement of said piston, and a cord extending from said Weight to a distant signal, which is operated by the fallingl of said weight, substantially as set forth.
2. In an alarm, a barrel for an explosive, a plunger providedwith a vent and a restoringspring for the plunger, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an alarm, a barrel for an explosive, in
weight arranged to be dislodged by the outward movement of said plunger, and a spring whereby said plunger is replaced, substantially as set forth.
4. The holder consisting of the two hinged plates, a a, correspondingly channeled to form a series of barrels for explosives, in combination with a series of plungers fitting in said barrels, as set forth.
5. The holder consisting of two correspondingly-grooved hinged sections, clamped together to form a series of barrels for explosives, provided with a common fuse-chamber and communicating ducts, substantially as set forth.
