Description

Jj Af WHITMAN.
(No Model.)
PUMP'.
Patented Dec. 5, 1882:
N, PETERS, FhnwLichagmphar. washmghm. D. l;
Uivrraeo STATES` PATENT OFFICE. I
JOSIAH A. WHITMAN, `OF CRANSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,581, dated December 5, 1882..-
Application filed March 28, 1 882. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JosIAH A. WHITMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objectot' this invention is to improve and at the same time cheapen the construction of pumps, and especially the pumps described in Letters Patent to me, dated January 8, 1878, and November 1, 1881; and it consists in the construction of the parts. and their combination with other parts, as will be fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a sectional view of my improved pump. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of some ot' the parts enlarged. Fig. 3 represents the lower end of the hollow plunger, having an enlarged bottom end and a contracted part above it. Fig. 4 represents the lower end of the hollow plunger, constructed to receive and secure `the valvebox within the contracted part. Fig. 5 represents a modification of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 represents the lower end of the hollow plunger, with` an enlarged lower end to act as a guide Without a contracted portion.
A represents the barrel or cylinder of the pump, which may be of cast or wrought metal.
B represents the hollow plunger, preferably made of metal tubing, dressed to be smooth and straight upon` its outside, so as to easily reciprocate Within a packing box, and near its lower end it has a contracted part, as at A b, and below this is an enlarged or expanded the form seen in Figs. 1 and 4, then the extreme endsof the enlarged part b will be turned in and underneath the bottom ot' the valve-box b" to secure it in place. In either case the enlarged part acts the same to be a guide within the barrel A and a stop to its upward recip rocation against the lower edge ot' the stuffing box or ring B. The insertible valve-box and seat b may be made ot' any suitable materialsuch as cast or wrought metal of any kind or composition, of wood, rubber, vulcanized ber, or other substance that will not dissolve in water or Wear too fast by the friction of the water passing through it, or the action of the valve upon the valve-seat in its function -ln rising to let the water pass by it, or in falling into its seat to retain the water aboveit. When this kind of valve-box and a ball-valve are used a transverse pin, c, is or may be inserted over the valve c' to limit its rise in the valvebox. A disk-valve or a valve of any other form may be used in the insertible box.
B is a metal ring, .that forms the lower part of'the stuffing-box, which is preferably struck up into form from-metal tubing or sheet metal, but may be of cast metal, hard rubber, vulcanized fiber, or other suitable substance iu the form seen in Figs. 1 and 2, or in other suitable forms, the upper edge,1,ot'which may be larger in diameter than the bore of the barrel of the pump,` and at its lower end, 2, it may be contracted, so that its inner diameter of the opening will allow the plunger B to freely slide throughit. A transverse crease or groove, 3, is made in the barrel B in its bore, which forms al shoulder at its upper line, and as the ring B is forced into the top of the barrel, within the bore thereof', the top will contract or spring in until it gets opposite the groove or crease 3, when it is free to expand, when the upper edge, 1, will be within the groove and resting firmly against the shoulder of the groove at its upper line. From this seat it cannot be moved withoutgreat force is applied. The same result can be produced by indenting creases in the barrel A, as seen in Fig. 5, as the enlarged upper edge rests firmly against the shoulder ot the groove, while the inclination of the groove lits closely the diminishing diameter of the sides of the ring, which prevents the ring from leaving its position and falling down out of the groove. A ring thus con- IOO siructed avoids the usual cast-metal stuffing or packing box to be attached tov the outside of' the barrel of the pump by screw-threads,
I as such threads are troublesome and costly to and stronger at the same time.
make, while this construction is much cheaper This ring forms only the lower part ofthe packing-box, while the screw-cap C, which is screwed into the top of the barrel A, and through which the plunger reciprocates, forms' the upper part and bears upon any intermediate material for the packing c". Other means for securing the cap C in or to the barrel of the pump may be used that will be safe, and at the same time become a means to press upon the packing to keep it in proper condition around the plunger and preventthe passage of air or Water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, in a pump, ot' the barrel A, having transverse grooves or creases 3, with the insertible packing ring B, coustructed in thev manner and for the purposesdescribed.
2. The combination, in a pump, of the insertible packing-ring B', groove or crease 3 in barrel A, with the packing c, and compressin g-cap C, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a pump such as above described, the combination ot' the insertible valve-box and valve-seat b, the hollow plunger B, having a contracted part, b, to receive the valve-box, and an enlarged part, b', to act as a guide and a stop to the plunger, and the packing ring B ot' the barrel A, as and for the purposes described.
4. The insertible valve-box b, constructed of metal or other suitable material, in combination with a hollow plunger, B, having the contracted part b and the enlarged or expanded part b', as and for the purposes described.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JosIAH A. WHITMAN.
