This invention relates generally to a container into which used blades may be disposed of and more particularly to the integration therewith of a containing space from which new blades may be dispensed for use in a razor.
The general object of the invention is the provision of an improved arrangement for receiving and storing used razor blades and more particularly single edge razor blades of the type wherein the unsharpened edge is thickened with a reinforcing back.
A more particular object is an improved ar rangement whereby used blades can be entered into one part of a razor blade container for storage and disposal and new blades dispensed from another part of said container.
For the attainment of these objects and such other objects as may herein appear or be pointed out, I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in the drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the razor blade container, with a new blade partly ejected;
Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a back view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing the component parts;
Fig. 5 is the bottom view of the unit (spring and blades not shown) Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a section on line 1-1 of Fig. 6 (spring not shown, blade shown in phantom outline); and
Fig. 8 is an end section looking toward the front of said container and taken along a line about halfway between the rear and front walls of the container, and shows the relative position of the new and used blades and the spring in the container.
The dispenser container is herein disclosed as particularly devised to dispense single edge blades l5 of the standard type whose unsharpened rear edge is thickened by reinforcement H. The container is comprised of side walls i2, front end wall 13, rear end wall It, top wall H and bottom wall 3!, The end walls l3 and I4 are provided with inwardly extending longitudinally aligned ribs 26 and 21 engageable with notches 2. in the side edge of the blades to hold them in vertically stacked relation. It will be observed that the notches 29 are located adjacent and slightly forwardly of the reinforcement l1.
An exit mouth I 8 for this type blade is provided in the upper portion of forward end wall :3 through which the topmost blade may be ejected. The mouth is enlarged at end l8 to receive the reinforced back ll of the blade and at the other end It for blade edge protection.
The stack is held elevated against the under surface of top wall H by spring 16 to align the topmost blade with mouth 18.
In order to give access to the interior of the container for filling it with blades, rear end wall It is shown in the illustrated embodiment as formed independently of the container body, as may be clearly seen in Fig. 4 wherein rear end wall M is shown as provided with tongues 23 projecting outwardly therefrom and received in recesses 24 provided in the container side walls. Proper location of the end wall for the complete assembly of the container is assured by the provision of a top ledge 25 which is adapted to abut against the end of top wall I I.
Top Wall H of the container body is provided with open ended guide slot IQ for the manually reciprocable ejector 20 which positions shoulder 2! to the rear of the reinforcement ll of the topmost blade.
Rib 40 depending from the undersurface of top H, extends longitudinally thereof and is located inwardly of slot l9 to define with the adjacent side wall 12, a channel in which reinforcement 11 of the topmost blade is received and located and by which it is guided through mouth l8.
The container incorporates an arrangement whereby used blades may be received and stored therewithin and whose nature will now be described by reference to the drawings.
It will be observed that the end wall 14 has its bottom cut away at one end as shown at 33 for a height and length sufficient to accommodate the thickness of blade reinforce l1 and inwardly thereof at 33' for a height and length to accommodate the unthickened razor blade portion which is to the front of reinforce i 1; that the bottom 31 of the casing is cut away at one end as shown at 35 to cooperate with cut away portion 33 of the rear wall to facilitate entry of the thickened reinforce l1; and that rib 21 extending forwardly from the rear wall l4 tapers downwardly and is located slightly to one side of the cut away portion 33 at the bottom of the rear wall.
Upon reference to Figs. 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8, it will be observed that the inner face of the container bottom is provided with three longitudinally extending spaced apart ribs of which the outer pair 36 are shown as of the same height and the innermost one 36' of slightly greater height. The innermost rib 36' is shown as spaced from the adjacent end wall l2 by a distance at least equal to the width of the spring I6 and the width or depth of the thickened rear portion ll of the blade. As a result, the spring when initially entered into the casing will be received between rib 36 and the adjacent wall l2 and the thickened rear end of a used blade being entered beneath the spring will seat on the two ribs 36 and to one side of the rib 3 so that the spring 15 and the thickened portion of the used blade H and the ribs 36 will be in underlying relation to one side of rib 36'. It will further be observed that the rib 36 has its inner face closely adjacent and to one side of the two ribs 26 and 2'4.
The three ribs 36 and 36 are aligned with the cut away portion 35 of the bottom and therefore terminate at the cut away portion. The rear top surfaces of the three ribs are all beveled downwardly to the opening 35. As a result, a used blade entering throughthe bottom opening will engage its thickened portion with the beveled ends of ribs 36 and its unthickened portion with the beveled end of rib 3B and the blade will be elevated by the bevels and held down upon the ribs by the overlying spring, as shown in Fig. 8.
This used blade entry mouth is widened at cutouts 33 and 35 to receive the thickened rear blade reinforced and narrowed at the rear wall cutout 33' to receive the relatively thinner blade portion to the front thereof. The used blade is thus precluded from being entered in any other manner.
As a result of the details of construction set forth in the paragraph preceding, the assembly of the rear wall M of Fig. 4 with the casing of Fig. 4 will provide a closed chamber which presents at the top of the casing, discharge mouth is for new blades and at the bottom of the casing, an entry mouth for the used blades. In the illustrated embodiment, the discharge mouth is shown at the upper end of the front wall and the entry mouth as at the lower end of the rear wall, so that the mouths are located at diagonally opposite top and bottom corners of the casing.
The spring 16 shown in Fig. 6 functions with both the new blades stacked thereabove and the used blades entered therebeneath through the mouth adjacent the bottom of the casing, as will be more fully set forth. Spring H5 is shown in Fig. 4 as formed from an elongated strip of spring metal bent upwardly and backwardly intermediate its ends to define a bottom portion i5 and a top portion I6 which extends angularly upwardly and backward from the bend. It will be observed that: the undersurface of this bend H3 is concavely curved; the angle of bend is shown as obtuse; the inner end of the bottom portion immediately adjacent the bend I5 is provided with an upwardly directed depression defined by angularly related walls "3 The spring is made from sheet material and is of a width which approximates and preferably slightly exceeds that of the thickened blade portion I! so that the spring can be received in the casing in underlying relation to the thickened portions of the new blades stacked thereon.
The container is assembled and loaded by inserting the spring l6 endwise with the bend I8 to the rear, into the open end of the casing and in between the rib 3B and the adjacent end wall 2 with the bottom portion (6 seated on the ribs 35 and also inserting the ejector 2!) into slot iii of the top wall of the casing; new blades are entered and stacked above the spring by depressing its finger I6 whose tension applies an upward pressure to the stack to engage its topmost blade against the undersurface of the top wall. The blades are held registered by engagement of rib 26 on the casing front wall, in the notches 23 on the adjacent ends of the blades. The end wall It is then entered into and closes the open end of the casing to enter its rib 21 into the notches at the other end of the stack. The adjacent ends of the bottom and rear walls define the entrance mouth for used blades.
When inserting the first used blade, the advancing end of the blade will have engaged with and been elevated by bevels 36 and 36' and will have engaged the curved spring surface I6 and been directed downwardly therebeneath. continued advance of the blade will be guided and controlled by downward pressure of the spring l6. Full entry of the used blade and engagement of its advancing notch 29 with rib 26 is assured by cutaway portion 35 into which the pushing finger of the operator may enter. Blade elevation effected thereby, will cause the distal notch 29 to fully engage 2! on rear wall It, which is facilitated by tapering rib 21 downwardly.
Following used blades are enterable in the same way, however without engaging spring 1% which is now interposed between the new and the used blades. As a result, the pressure applied by spring IE will be maintained uniform because for every new blade that is dispensed at the top, an old blade will be entered at the bottom. Spring It will however be gradually elevated until it engages against the undersurface of the casing top wall when the new blades are completely exhausted. The ribs 36 and 35 and their bevels are important in that they elevate the used blades already entered below the spring, to a level above the entry mouth to thus clear the entry mouth for reception of a succeeding used blade therebelow. In this manner, used blades can be entered successively through the entrance mouth therefor without interference by the previously entered and lowermost used blade below the spring.
It will be observed upon reference to Fig. 6 that the weight of the stack of new blades is applied directly to the free end of the upwardly inclined finger portion IE of spring 16 and that this finger portion will be angled downwardly thereby into closer adjacency to the base portion it to tension the spring. This angling of the finger is facilitated by the curved portion H5 and the angularly related walls I6 which define the upwardly directed depression in front thereof. This resulting spring tension is applied upwardly to the new blades and also downwardly to the used blades therebeneath.
I claim:
A blade container, a stack of single edge used blades having thickened back portions contained therein, said container having side, end, bottom and top walls, one of said end walls having a used blade entrance slot adjacent said bottom wall, said bottom wall being provided with two parallel longitudinally extending spaced apart ribs, one of said ribs being spaced from one side wall a distance only slightly greater than the width of said thickened back portion of the lowermost of said used blades to form a channel for said thickened back portion, the other of said two ribs being located between said channel-forming rib and said side wall, said second-mentioned rib underlying the thickened back portion of the lowermost of said used blades, said channelforming rib underlying the unthickened portion of the lowermost of said used blades, said ribs being of a height sufficient to elevate the lowermost of said used blades above said used blade entrance slot, said channel-forming rib being of greater height than said second-mentioned rib and being of such a height as to level the lowermost of said used blades to the horizontal, said ribs having free ends facing said used blade entrance slot which taper into said bottom wall, and a spring in said container to bias said used blades toward said ribs.
