The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools for cutting and trimming linoleum.
An important object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character having a pair of spaced parallel rotary cutters and with spacing washers or sleeves removably positioned between the cutters to adjust the cutters according to a desired cutting width.
Another object is to provide a removable shaft for the cutters and spacers with novel locking means holding the shaft in the cutting frame.
A further object is to provide a detachable guide for one end of the tool.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efcient, accurate and dependable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view;
Figure 3 is a top plan view;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on a line 4--4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged side elevational view showing the locking key for the shaft.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a Y-shaped frame having a knurled handle 6 at its stem portion and parallel arms 'I at its forked portion.
A shaft 8 is removably positioned in openings -9 in the arms l, one end of the shaft having a head I at the outside of one arm and a circumferential groove II at its other end engaged in a key hole slot I2 in a locking key I3 secured in slidably adjusted position to the outside of the adjacent arm by a set screw I4 to lock the shaft in the narrow portion of the slot I2.
A pair of rotatable cutters I are held on shaft 8 in adjustable spaced apart relation with respect to each other by removable spacing sleeves IIS positioned on the shaft between the cutters and also placing spacing sleeves II between the cutters and the adjacent arms 1.
An inverted U-shaped guide I8 is formed with alined openings I9 in its legs 20 to receive screws 2i for attaching to arm 'I at a side of the frame opposite to locking key I3, while the lowermost of the openings I9 removably receives head It of the shaft, so that the guide is held close against the side of the frame.
In the operation of the tool,- the cutters I5 are adjusted to a desired width by arranging the cutters and spacing sleeves in proper relation on the shaft and sliding the locking key I3 into locking position with the groove II of the shaft. This may be accomplished without removing guide i 8.
An angle iron straight edge 22 is then placed in position adjacent the edge of the linoleum 23 to be cut and with the guide I8 sliding on the upstanding edge of the straight edge to accurately guide the cutter.
The cutter may thus be used to cut a strip from the linoleum to receive a previously cut border of contrasting color or design or the cutter may be used for trimming the edges of the linoleum by removing one of the cutters.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A cutter of the class described comprising a Y-shaped frame including a handle and a pair of parallel arms, a shaft removably supported in the arms and having an annular groove adjacent one end, a locking key slidably secured to one of the arms and having a key hole slot lockably engaged in the groove, a rotary cutter on the shaft between the arms, and spacing members removably carried by the shaft and holding the cutter in adjusted position between the arms.
2. A cutting device including a frame terminating in a pair of spaced parallel arms, an axle extending between and slidably journaled in said arms, at least one rotary cutting disc mounted on said axle, the ends of said axle terminating exteriorly of said arms and locking means preventing sliding movement of said axle with respect to said arms, said locking means including said axle having a circumferential groove in one end thereof, a locking plate vertically slidably mounted on the arm through which said one end of said axle extends and means selectively locking said locking plate in said circumferential groove.
3. A cutting device including a frame terminating in a pair of spaced parallel arms, an axle extending between and slidably journaled in said arms, at least one rotary cutting disc mounted on said axle, the ends of said axle terminating exteriorly of said arms and locking means preventing sliding movement of said axle with respect to said arms, said locking means including said axle having a circumferential groove in one end thereof, a locking plate vertically slidably mounted on the arm through which said one end of said axle extends and means selectively locking said locking plate in said circumferential groove, said locking plate having an elongated slot provided with upper and lower key hole shaped portions, the lower of said key hole shaped portions receiving said one end of said axle, a fastener securing the plate to the arm, the distance between said fastener and said axle end being less than the distance between the key hole portions on said slot;

A cutter of the class described comprising a Y-shaped frame including a handle and a pair of parallel arms, a shaft removably supported in the arms and having an annular groove adjacent one end, a locking key slidably secured to one of the arms and having a key hole slot lockably engaged in the groove, a rotary cutter on the shaft between the arms, and spacing members removably carried by the shaft and holding the cutter in adjusted position between the arms, and an inverted U-shaped guide secured to the outside of one of the arms to guide the cutter on a track.
