Application July'23, 1951, Serial No. 238,129
1 This invention relates to a window construction, and more particularly to such a construction provided with a double sash.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an improved window of this nature wherein each sash is provided with an inner sash which may be removed for purposes of replacement, cleaning or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sash of this character wherein the inner sashes are provided with extending sills for deflection of the water to prevent seepage of rain under sill.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved catch for holding the inner removable sash in association with the outer, the catch being provided with means to form handles for facilitating the removal of the removable sash when the catches are released.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description proceeds as shown in the accompanying drawing wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan View of one form of window construction embodying the instant invention, as Viewed from the outside,
Figure 2 is a similar View as seen from the inside,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure 2, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line i:l of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along the line 5-5 of Figure 2,
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 6-6 of Figure 2, with the removable frames removed,
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view of a constructional detail, taken substantially along the line 1---! of Figure 6,
Figure 8 is an enlarged sectional view of a further constructional detail,
Figure 9 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 99 of Figure 2,
Figure 10 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line Ill-l0 of Figure 9.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, there is generally indicated at a window frame of any 1 Claim. (Cl. 20-56.1)
desired conventional type within which are slidably mounted upper and lower sashes 2i and 22 respectively. Any suitable conventional means such as counter-weights or the like (not shown) for facilitating the raising and lowering of the sashes as well as holding them in adjusted posi tion, may be provided.
The upper sash 2| is provided with a removable inner section generally indicated at 23, and comprised of a rectangular frame 24 adapted to seat in a suitable rabbet 25 0f the outer sash. A
. window pane 26 is centrally positioned in frame 23 which is grooved as at 2? to receive the same.
The pane is secured in position as by means of strips 28, adapted to overlie the conventional putty or the like employed in securing the pane in its associated channel to conceal the latter. Suitable latch means to be more fully described hereinafter are provided for holding the sash 23 in a position relative to the outer sash.
Weather stripping may be provided as best shown in Figures 6 and 10, adjacent lower corners of the inner sash where water seepage is more apt to occur and takes the form of a metal plate generally indicated at 30, including an inner wall 3| abutting the side of the outer sash, a second wall 32 against the front face of the channel of the outer sash and a bottom wall 33 having an inwardly extending portion 34 adapted to facilitate drainage.
Suitable tacks or screws 35 are adapted to hold the metal strip in place. As best shown in Figure 6, the bottom plate 33 is inclined outwardly relative to the sash to deflect water outwardly therefrom.
Referring now to the means for retaining the inner sash in position relative to the outer, the side walls of frame 25 are provided at spaced intervals with recesses adapted for the reception of handle members ll, pivotally mounted as on pivots 42 and connected as by a link 33 having a slot 44 therein with a pin 45 comprising an integral portion of a bolt ifi adapted to slide inwardly and outwardly relative to a recess ll in the inner side of the outer sash.
It will be readily apparent that when the bolts are in locking position the handles ll will be retained within their associated recesses, but when it is desired to unlatch the bolts movement of the handles to the dotted line position shown in Figure 4 will permit the withdrawal of the bolts. At the same time the extended handles will serve as a ready means whereby the inner sash may be readily removed from the outer.
As best shown in Figures 1 and 3, sash 23 is provided at its lower edge with a sill 50, provided with a depending lip 5| extending entirely across the surface of the window which serves as' a water deflector to prevent seepage of water between the bottom of the sash and its associated outer sash.
The bottom sash 21 is substantially identical in construction to that previously described in connection with the upper sash 2|, and accordingly no further description in addition to that above given in connection with sash 21 is believed necessary.
As various embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as various modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore set forth and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
In a window construction, a sash formed of upper and lower rails and a pair of stiles, said upper rail and said. stiles having an inwardly facing rabbet, a second sash removably seated in said rabbet, said second sash having upper and lower rails and opposite stiles, a downwardly iii) projecting lip carried by said second named lower rail engaging over the outer side of said first named lower rail, and means latching said second sash in said first named sash, said latching means comprising a horizontally slidable bolt in each stile of said second sash, an operating lever rockably carrier by each stile of said second sash, a link fixed relative to said lever and having an elongated slot, and a pin carried. by said bolt engaging in said slot, each stile of said first named sash having a keeper recess in which said bolt is adapted to engage.
