SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,088, dated November 28, 1882.

to cigar-manufacturers an improved press by which cigars may be quickly and uniformly packed 1nto the boxes; and the invention consists of a follower which is vertically raised or lowered by a treadle-operated lever, the lever and its operating mechanism being balanced by a counter-weight or spring. The follower is locked into position when lowered by means of a fulcrumed and weighted pawl, which engages a sliding rack-bar pivoted to the lever, the follower being instantly raised by the action of the weight when the pawl is withdrawn from the rack-bar.

In the accompanying drawings, Figurelrepresents a side elevation of my improved press for packing cigars; and Fig. 2 isan end elevation, partly in section on line as a2, Fig. 1, showing the rack and pawl by'whieh the follower is locked in position.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the table of m y improved machine for packing cigars, and B an upright standard, which is provided with a forward-projecting arm, B, at its upper end. Afollower, (J, is rigidly applied to the lower end of a rod or stem, 0, which is guided in vertical holes of the arm B, and of a second arm, 13, arranged below arm B. The forked upper end of the rod 0 is pivoted to a lever, D, the front end of which is connected by a pivot-link, d, to the front end of the arm B, while the rear end is connected by a lever-rod, D, which passes through anopening in the table A, to a treadle, E, that is pivoted at its rear end and guided at its front end by a fixed stirrup, E. The treadle, the lever mechanism, and the follower are balanced by a counter-weight, E which is connected by a wire rope or chain, 0, to the treadle, and passed over a guide-pulley, 0, applied to the under side of the-table A, so that the follower, after being lowered by the downward pressing of I the treadle, is raised by the weight as soon as the treadle is released. In place of the weight, a strong balancing-spring may be used.

To the standard B is fulcrumed a weighted pawl, F, which is thrown by gravity into a rack-loar, F, that is vertically guided by suitable means alongside of the standard B. The rack-bar F is pivoted at its upper end to the lever D. A stop-pin, f, of the standard B,

above the fulcrum of the weighted pawl F,

serves as a stop for the pawl F when thesame is raised for the purpose of withdrawing the same from the rack-bar, in which case the outer weighted end of the pawl serves as a handle for taking hold of the pawl.

The packing-press is operated as follows The box to be packed is filled with cigars and placed on the table below the follower, with the lid in open position, and a press-board placed 0 on the top of the cigars, as shown in Fig. 1. The follower is now lowered by the pressure of the foot upon the treadle, and thereby the cigars pressed into the box until the pressboard arrives on a level with the upper edge of the box. The follower retains the pressboard in its position by the locking action of.

the pawl, which engages automatically the rack-bar. As the follower moves in a straight vertical direction, a direct pressure is exerted by the press-board upon the cigars, so that the same are compressed evenly in the box without being moved to either side and broken or otherwise injured during the pressing operation. The follower may remain on the cigars for any length of time, and is then quickly released from the cigars by simply raising the pawl, whereupon the follower and treadle are simultaneously raised by the action of the balance-weightor spring, the box is removed, and the press is ready for the next box of cigars, and so on. The press exerts a uniform pressure upon thecigars and admits of a quick and reliable packing of the cigars into boxes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a press for packing cigars, the combination of a standard, avertical shaft supported thereby, longitudinal arms for guiding the shaft,ra follower attached to the lower end of the shaft, alink connecting the lever and arm, a rack-bar, fulcrumed and weighted pawl and 2 assess stop-pin, a weighted treadle, and a rod connecting the treadle and actuating-lever, substantially as described.

The combination of a supporting-standard,B, having guide-arms B B follower O, actuating-lever D, pivoted to the follower-rod G,and the arm B, connecting-rod D, treadle E, balance-Weight or spring E pivoted and guided rack-barF,and fulcrumed and weighted pawl F, all arranged substantially as and x0 for the purpose set forth.
