No. 267,976. Patented Nov. 21, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' wALLAoE DURAND, OF NEWARK, NEW JEEs Y, Assienon TO DUBAND &
-oo., oE-sAME PLACE.
SLEEVE-BUTTON, STUD, &.o.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,976, dated November 21, 1882.
' Application filed August 1. 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALLAoE DURAND, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinSleeve-Buttons,Bosom-Studs, N ecktie- Holders, Bracelets, Napkin Rings, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of sleeve-buttons and other articles, having in the principles of construction an adaptation equally to bosom-studs, bracelets, and napkinholders; and it consists in the locking-arm hung between two lugs attached to the back portion of the article, and adapted to be worked at right angle with the back and sustained in position, either open or closed, by a spring, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a sleeve-button. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is the same with the locking-arms thrown open. Fig. 5 is a plan with the arms thrown open on a line ofw w on Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a bosom-stud closed. Fig. 7 is the same open. Fig.8 is a detail view taken from Fig. 4 on a line of Fig. 9 shows it applied to a bracelet, and Fig. 10 to a napkin ring or holder.
In my construction, to the baseAof a sleevebutton, or whatever other article, (the applicationis the same in all cases,) I attach springarms B by means of a hingejoint, G, with a section, D, of the arm made to pass in between thelugs E, secured to the base, and thisbase has at each end the cut or slit F, and it may or may not be made with the holes G. The lugs E are secured one to each part 0 of the base separated by the said slit, and herein consists the spring for holding the arms in position, either open or closed. The inside of one of the lugs (and both may be so made) is provided with two grooves, the one, H, lying parallel with the base, as seen in Figs. 7 and 8, and the other, I, at right angle with it, as seen in Fig. 5; and the D section of the arm is provided with a rib, K, on the side toward the grooves H and I. Said rib is parallel with the sides of said arm, so that when it is thrown down, locking the article, the rib catches into the groove H, (see Fig. 4,) and the parts O of the base inclining together act as the spring to prevent the arm from being raised but by an especial effort; but when required to throw open the arms a proper force will carry the rib up out of groove H until the arm stands at right angle with the base, as seen in Figs. 4, 5, and 7, when the rib will rest in the groove I and the arms be held open by the spring part 0, as before they were held closed. The same devices are adapted to closing a bracelet (see Fig. 9) or a napkin ring or holder, as
shown in Fig. 10, the base in each case being made in shape to accommodate the place of use. A bosom stud and a breastpin, breach,
or like article may be attached in the same way. The base is cut in half transversely, and only one part and one arm are used; but the construction is the same otherwise.
In usethe article, with the arm orarms open, istaken, and the arm, as in a stud, is pushed through an opening in the goods made to receive it, and then the arm is thrown down, locking the stud in position; butfor the sleevebutton two holes are made, one in each end of a cuff, into which the two arms are inserted and turned down. holder the arms are thrown open, and the article to be inolosed is laid in and the arms'are thrown down, closing the open space. The
- end L of the arm becomes a stop striking the hinge to prevent the arms from being thrown open too wide. ln sleeve-buttons, 850., these arms may be inserted from the face or the base of the article worn, and then either the arms or what I have called the base will be ornamented and finished for sight.
It will be seen that a spring may be put under the end of the arms between the lugs, and answer the same purpose of the spring named to hold the arms open or closed within the intent of my invention.
I claim- An improved button, stud, &c., consisting of the base A, provided with two lugs, E, and spring-acted arms B, hinged or jointed theirto, adapted to open outward for attachment, 5 and to fold inward to close the same, their free ends, when closed, lying in opposite directions, substantially as shown and described.
