UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
P ETTER O. N. PEDERSON, OF NEENAH, WISCONSIN.
PAPER-TRIMMINd APPARATUS FOR USE OF PAPER-HANGERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,925, dated November 21', 1882.
Application filed July '7, 1,882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETTER G. N. FEDER- SON, of Neenah, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improved Paper-Trimming Apparatus for Use of Paper-Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved hand apparatus of simple construction for use of paper-hangers for trimming pasted paper.
It consists of three partsto wit, a knife, a cutting-board, and a straight-edge which is adapted to be clamped to the latter so as to confine the paper between them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus, showing the parts in the position required for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the cutter. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the application of the straight-edge for clamping paper upon the cutting-board.
The knife proper,-A, consists of a handle, a, and a circular rotary steel-cutter, I), which is journaled in one end of the former. In con nection with said cutter b, I employ a device for sharpening and cleaning it. The same consists of a steel spring, 0, which is secured at the middle of its length to an adjustable bar, (I, and has its free ends crossed in front of the edge of the cutter b, so as to rest in contact with the edge thereof. Said ends of the spring 6 also project into a slot in the handle a, so that they are prevented being thrown out of place by friction with the cutter. The bar d is clamped by screws to adapt it to be readily adjusted toward or from the cutter I), so that the friction or abrading action of the spring with the latter may be regulated as required.
The straight-edge B is a narrow wooden strip, having a toothed dog, 0, pivoted at each end.
The teeth thereof pass through the straightedge. The latter is preferably of less length and width than the cutting-board O.
In using the apparatus, the paper which has been pasted is folded double, with its edges parallel, and laid on the cutting -board, as shown in full lines, Fig. 3.
The straight-edge B is then laid on the paper and the dogs 0 struck with the back of the knife-handle A to force their teeth into the cutting board, so that they will hold the straight-edgefirmly in place and cause it to clamp the paper in turn. To adapt the knife for such use as a hammer, a metal plate,f, is fastened to the back of the handle, as shown. The knife is then held with the cutter near the side of the straight-edge B and the handle a in an inclined position, indicated in Fig. 1, and while so held is pushed along to cause the cutter b to sever the portion of the paper that projects beyond the straight-edge. The spring 0 scrapes the cutter I), thus removing adhering paste and paper, so that it will not clog inthe handle, and also producing a sharp edge that will cut the paper neatly. When the paper has been thus cut the dogs 6 are next raised and the straight-edge B removed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved knife for use of paperhangers, consisting of a handle, a circular rotatable cutter, and a device attached to said handle for scraping and sharpening the edge of the latter, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the knife handle and cutter, of the adjustable bar and the spring attached thereto, and the latter having its free ends crossed so as to press on the cutter, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the straight-edge and toothed dogs pivoted thereto with the cutting-board, as shown and described, and for the purpose specified. V
