' J. FOLEY.
BASIN COOK AND OVERFLOW.
210,287,888. Patented Nov. 21, 1882.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES. FOLEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BASl-N COCK AND OVERFLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,863,11ated November 21, 1882.
Application filed September 12, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES FOLEY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Basin (locks and Overflows, of which the following is a specification.
In my Patent No. 6,739 (reissue) there is a stand-pipe that connects with the sewer or waste pipe and with an arm to the escapepipe of the basin, and within this stand-pipe there is a tubular valve that is raised or lowered by a stem to open or close the wastepipe. The handle for the stem comes above the slab at the side of the basin. In some instances persons do not know 'how to operate the valve to allow the Water to escape, and in other instances the seat of the valve becomes obstructed by sediment and foreign substances. i
My present invention is for overcoming the aforesaid difficulties by combining with the stand-pipe and overflow a tubular plug at the lower end of theoverflow-pipe, which plug forms a cool: at the junction of the branch to the basin with the stand1pipe, and to this overflow-pipe a stem and handle are applied, so as to turn the same, and a spring presses the plug into the barrel of the cock.
i In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sec tion of my improved overflow and basin cock, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line 00 x.
The stand-pipe (t is provided with a screwcap, I), at the top, which cap is adapted to set upon the surface of the marble slab d, and to support the stand-pipe. This stand-pipe, however, maybe firmly secured to the slab by screw-rings on its exterior surface, or otherwise, so as to be held in place independently of the screw-cap. b. At thelower end of this stand-pipe there is a vertical conical barrel, e, from which there is a lateral connection, f. The lower end of e is to be connected to the waste-pipe g by solder or a screw-coupling, and the lateral connection f is connected by a pipe, h, to the escape-opening at the bottom of the basin l, and there is a water-way at m opening from the stand-pipe a. into the lateral 'pipef, so that water from the basin can al-' ways run freely into the stand-pipe.
Within the barrel 6 there is a tubular plug, 0, forming a cock. It may be ground in or otherwise made water-tight, and said plug is open at the lower end, and there is a lateral opening through the plug corresponding to the tubef, so that when this plug 0 is turned to 'make the holes correspond the water flows away freelyfrom the basin but when thelateral openingfis closed by turning the plug 0 the the water cannot escape, but will accumulate both in the basin and in the stand-pipe until it rises as high as the top of the tubular overflow s, that is formed as a tubular extension of the plug 0, or as a separate tube soldered into the same.
At the top of the overflow-tube 8 there is a stem, r, with branches at its lower end con nected permanently with s, and the stem passes up through the capb and terminateswith a handle, t, by means of which the overflow and plug can be rotated to open or close the basincock 0, and the spring u around the stem 0* serves to press the plug into its barrel and keep the basin-cock tight.
By the removal of the screw-cap the overflow and cook can be taken out for cleaning.
This improvement is available for abathtub as well as a wash-basin, the overflow-pipe V being elongated and the stand-pipe being of Signed by me this 5th day of September, I
JAMES FOLEY.
