CHRIST ADLER, OF MILTON CENTRE, OHIO.
SPEED AND MOTION REGULATOR FOR MACHINES.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,818, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed September 15, 1.882. (No model.)
ton Centre, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Speed and Motion Regulator for Machines, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for regulating the speed and direction of motion in machinery.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device for regulating the speed and direction in machinery. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of part of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the front end of the machine. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a notched frame for holding the adjusting-lever in the desired place. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional elevationof the shaft to which the motion is to be transmitted.
The shaft A, to which the power is to he transmitted, is journaled in the side pieces, B,
of the frame B. The shaft G, from which the power is to be transmitted, is also journaled in the side pieces, B, of the frame B, andon the same is mounted a belt-pulley, G, for the drivingbelt G and a belt-pulley, D, over which a belt, E, passes, which also passes over a pulley, F, on a vertical shaft, G, which is journaled in a U-shaped frame, H, the ends of which are journaled on a shaft, A, journaled in the frame B, so that the frame H can rock on the shaft A. A spring, J, contained in the upper part of the frame H presses on a plate attached to the upper end of the shaft G, and is held between the said plate and a plate attached to the lower end of an adjusting-screw, K, projecting from the top of'thc frame H, and provided with a handle, K. A friction-wheel, L, is rigidly mounted on the-lower end of the shaft G, between the shanks of the frame H, which friction-wheel is provided in its lower flat surface with a concavity, a, at the middle. The plane of the friction-wheel L will be parallel with the longitudinal axis of the shaft A. On the shaftAthe friction-wheel M is mounted,
slide longitudinally on the same.
the plane of which is at right angles to the shaft A, anti the edge of which friction-wheel is in contact with the lower smooth surface of the friction-wheel L. A feather, b, on the shaft A passes through a notch in 'the hub of the friction-wheel M, so that the said frictionwheel must rotate with the shaft A, but can The hub M of the wheel M is provided with an annular groove, into which a fork, 0, passes, the opposite end of which is adapted to slide on a rod, N, attached to the sides B of the frame B, parallel with the shaft A. The free end of the fork O is connected by awire, d, with the end of an arm, P, of a vertical shaft, Q, journaled in a standard, R, on the end of the frame B, which arm P passes through a horizontal slot, P, in the end piece, B The upper end of the shaft Q is provided with a handle, S, upon which a locking-lever, S, is pivoted, the inner end of which passes through the handle S, and is adapted to catch on a notched segmental plate, T, secured on the upper end of the standard R. The frame H is connected with the standard R, and is held in the desired position by means ofa rod, U, and spring W, the tension of which spring can be adjusted by means of a double nut-frame, Y.
The operation is as follows: The shaft- (J is r0- tated by means ofthe beltO fi-om some suitable motor. The beltlil is drawn taut by means of the spring W, the rod U, and the double nutframe Y, and consequently will rotate the shaft Grand the friction-wheel Lrnounted thereon. The spring J presses the shaft Gr downward, and thus presses the surface of the frictionwheel L on the edge of the friction-wheel M. The spring J can be adjusted by means of the screw-rod K to exert a greater or less pressure on the shaft G. As the friction-wheel L is rotated and is in contact with the friction-w heel M, the latter will also be rotated, and will in turn rotate the shaft A, to which the power is tq be transmitted. If the edge of the wheel M is in contactwith the surface of the wheel L near the periphery, the wheel M will be rotated very rapidly; but as the wheel M is gra-dthe wheel M is at the middle of the wheel L the motion of the shaft A ceases, as on account ICO of the concavity the wheels cannot come in contact, the pulley F preventing the spring J from forcing down the shaft G sufficiently to cause contact. Thus, by moving the edge of the wheel M to and from the periphery of the wheel L the speed of the shaft A can be increased or decreased gradually or rapidly, as may be desired. lfthe edge of the wheel M is in contact with the periphery of the wheel L at one side of the frame H, the shaft A will be moved from right to left. If the wheel M is then moved to be in contact with the wheel L at the opposite side of the frame H, the motion of the shaft A will be reversed-that is, it will be from left to right. In this manner the motion of the shaft A can be easily reversed by shifting the wheel M, and the machine need not be stopped to reverse the motion. To shift the wheel M, the locking-lever S is disengaged from the curved notched plate T, and then the arm S is turned the desired distance and turns the arm P, which is connected by the rod or wire at with the fork O, resting in the annular groove in ,the hub of the friction-wheel M.
The great advantage of this device is that the speed and the motion can be changed without stopping the machine, whereby a great loss of power is avoided, and the parts are not subjected to great or sudden strains. The entire mechanism is simple, can be easily operated, and requires but little adjustment.
The above-described mechanism can be used in any machinery, but is best adapted for use with a sawing-machine.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pa tent- 1. The combination of the springW, rod U, and double nut-frame Y,whereby the belt may be tightened, as described.
2. The combination, with a horizontallymovable friction-wheel, M, of a fixed frictionwheel, L. rotating in contact with and at right angles to it, and provided with a central concavity, a, whereby the wheel M will cease to be actuated as soon as it reaches the concavity a, as and tor the purpose specified.
