This invention relates to adhesive dispensing apparatus for brush making machines and more especially to an apparatus for automatically ejecting a predetermined amount of adhesive adjacent a brush back or blank prior to bristles being positioned in said brush back or blank by a brush making machine.
It is an object of this invention to provide a devic adapted to be associated With conventional or other types of brush makin machines wherein a bunch of bristles is fed to a bristle guide and at the same time, a wire staple is fed to the bristle guide and a plunger automatically positions the bristles with the wire staple thereabout in a brush back. The brush back may be circular or flat or of any desired configuration and is provided with a plurality of bores or holes therein adapted to receive the bristles. Now, in order to secure the bristles in the bores in the brush back, it has been found desirable and frequently necessary to put a drop of adhesive such as liquid glue in each of the bores to further secure the bristles within the bores. Heretofore, it has been necessary to place this glue in each bore in the brush back manually prior to the automatic operation of the brush making machine, which operation drives the bristles and staples into the bores in the brush back. This manual operation is costly and time consuming and the present invention which comprises a device for automatically ejecting or dispensing adhesive into the bores of the brush back upon operation of the brush making machine is provided to overcome the difficulties of the manual operation and to provide a faster more efficient means for adhesively securing bristles in a brush back than has heretofore been possible.
It is another object of this invention to pro vide a device adapted to be associated with a machine of the type described for positioning brush bristles in brush backs comprising means automatically operable by said machine for ejecting a drop of liquid glue into each bore in the brush back just prior to the bristles being positioned therein by the brush making machine and said device having cam means associated therewith driven by said machine to cause the same to operate in timed relation to the bristle positioning mechanism of said machine.
It is another object of this invention to provide in a machine of the type described having a bristle guide through which bristles are driven for positioning the same in a brush back, a bore in said bristle guide, a nozzle positioned in said bore, and a plunger mechanism associated with said nozzle for ejecting adhesive through said nozzle into the bristle guide so that it will fall by gravity into a bore in th brush back and means associated with said machine for actuating said plunger mechanism to cause a predetermined-amount of adhesive to be ejected by said nozzle into the bristle guide just prior to a bunch of bristles being driven through said bristle guide into a bore in said brush back.
It is another object of this invention to provide in a brush making machine of the type described, adhesive dispensing apparatus comprising a cylinder having a nozzle on one end thereof and a piston in the other end thereof and having means for introducing adhesive to the cylinder and said apparatus also being provided with cam means operatively connected to the drive means for said brush making machine for actuating said piston to cause a predetermined amount of adhesive to be ejected from said nozzle at predetermined intervals.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an isometric view of the improved adhesive dispensing device showing parts of a brush making machine of the type with which the improved device may be associated and illustrating one type of brush back with which the invention may be used;

For purposes of illustration only, there are shown parts of a brush making machine broadly designated at I 0 which brush making machine may be of any desired conventional or other construction, it being understood that the present invention may be associated with various types of brush making machines and is not limited to use with the particular machine shown. Other machines of the type with which this invention may be used are-illustrated in United States patents, Numbers 801,026, 845,959, 846,583, 869,313,
870,114, 996,246, 920,355, 1,125,136, 1,161,394 and 1,167,764. The particular "riving means illustrated are shown and clearly described in Patent No. 80 ,026 and the particular type of brush illustrated in the drawings is shown clearly in Patent No. 1,125,136. A detailed description of these parts will not be given except as may be necessary to fully illustrate the operation of the present invention.
The brush making machine #8 may have a suitable table ii on which the operative parts of the machine are positioned and the table II may be supported in any suitable manner. The bristles may be moved into this tuft forming position manually or by any suitable mechanism such as is more clearly illustrated in one or more of the above noted patents.
The guide block H has a cut away portion through which a laterally movable anvil, not shown, has reciprocatory movement and a wire 2G is moved over the anvil, not shown, so that vertical movement of the plunger block 2 will cause a'staple to be "formed from said wire which staple is then driven over the bristles by the plunger l3 as the plunger it drives the bristles through the bristle guide into the bores 16 in the brush back ET. The wire 24 is fed from a suitable source such as a reel, not shown, through a guide 25 positioned on a sliding wire actuator 26 slidably mounted in a guide 3% suitably positioned on the table H and a groove in the table I I. The wire 2d also passes through a stop block 29 suitably secured to the guide 38 and the table l I. The sliding wire actuator 25 has a pair of movable jaws 32 and 33 which are adapted to grip the wire 24 and to move it through an adjustable shear block t l adjustably mounted in the guide block 26. The sliding wire actuator is described in detail in said Patent No. 801,026 and is provided with an anti-friction roller rotatably mounted thereon which is engaged by a cam 36 suitably journaled in a bearingblock 31 fixed on the table H.

The nozzle 55 is provided with a glue ejecting bore 66 and a chamber 51 communicating with the glue ejectbore {5L- and a bore Eda through the nipple E4. The outer end of the nozzle is reduced at 58 for purposes to be described. The bore S lo in the nipple E l is of a smaller diameter than the chamber 5! and a ball "ii; is held in engagement therewith by a spring 7! which thus op-- crates as a check valve.
The cylinder 55; is provided with a bore therein in which is positioned one end of an ad hesive line is suitably secured therein as by welding and the other end of the adhesive line '53 is removably secured in the bottom of an adhesive container El as by a. coupling iii, the line H3 communicating with the interior or the adhesive container ii. The adhesive container is provided as a source of adhesive such as liquid glue, not shown, and the upper end 01'' the adhesive container W is provided with a threaded bore in which is mounted a threaded plug 88 which has a breather hole 8| therein and which plug 88 may be removed to permit additional adhesive to be placed in the container 11.
The adhesive container 11 may be supported solely by the line I6 or if desired suitable bracket means or the like, not shown, may be utilized to connect the adhesive container 11 to the brush making machine.
The end of the piston 62 remote from the cylinder I8 is adjustably mounted in an adjustment block 85 as by a set screw 86. The adjustment block 85 also has one end of a plunger 81 adjustably mounted therein as by a set screw 88. The plunger 8! extends through a tubular guide or sleeve 98 fixedly mounted in a plunger support block 9I as by a set screw 89 and the block 9| is suitably secured to the vertical flange 53 of the bracket 5I as by screws 92. The flange 53 preferably has slots 93 therein which are penetrated by the screws 92 to permit adjustment of'the plunger support block 9| on the bracket 5|. The upper end of the plunger 81 is provided with a plate-like cam follower portion 94 and-a compression spring 95 is positioned about the upper end of the plunger 81 and is confined between the plate-like cam follower portion 94 and the upper end of the tubular sleeve 98. The sleeve 98 may be adjusted in the plunger support block 9I by the set screw 89 to vary the tension of the spring 95. The plunger 81 has sliding movement in the tubular sleeve 98 and is normally urged upwardly or to the right in Figure 1, 2 and 3 by the compression spring 95. The conventional cam 36 on the brush making machine for actuating the sliding wire actuator is mounted on a rotating shaft, not shown, and suitably secured to this cam 36 or to the shaft on which it is mounted, as by said shaft being, provided with an internally threaded bore, is the threaded end of a cap screw or cam shaft I88 which is surrounded by a sleeve I8I and which has a cam I82 held in position against the outer end thereof by the head of the cap screw. The sleeve I8I serves to space the cam I82 from the cam 36 and the cap screw I88 will cause the cam I82 to rotate with the cam 36. .It will be notedthat the high point of the cam I82 is positioned oppositely to the high point of the cam 36,50 that the cam I82 will cause actuation of the glue ejecting device just prior to mo'vementof the sliding wire actuator by the cam 36.
Obviously, the cam I82 may be adjusted as desired to cause actuation of the adhesive dispensing device at any desired time relative to other movements of the brush making machine. The highpoint of the cam I82 engages the platelike cam follower surface 94 of the plunger 8'Ito cause the plunger 87 to move downwardly onto the left in Figures 1, 2 and 3 to cause the piston 62 to move inwardly or the left in Figure 4 in the cylinder 68 to thus force adhesive, which has been moved by gravity through the pipe 16 into the chamber 6I in the cylinder 68, against, the spring pressed ball I8 and out through the nozzle bore 66. The reduced end portion 68 of the nozzle 65 is provided to be inserted in a bore I85 which is provided in one side of the bristle guide I 5. v
With the portion 681 of the nozzle positioned in the bore I 85 in the bristle guide, it will be observed that adhesive emitted from the nozzle bore 65 will pass through the bore I85 into the interior of the bristle guide and will fall by gravity,--therethrough into the bore-l6 oflthc brush I! which is positioned immediately below the bristle guide. After the adhesive has been ejected into the bristle guide, the bunch of bristles will be driven through the bristle guide by the hammer I3 in a conventional manner into the bore I6 and as the bristles move through the guide I5, they will wipe any excess adhesive from the interior of the guide I5.
The adjustment block 85 is provided to adjust the length of stroke of the piston 62 so that any desired amount of adhesive may be emitted from the nozzle 64 according to various requirements.
It is thus seen that there is provided in a. brush making machine having a bristle guide and plunger mechanism for driving bristles through said bristle guide and means for forming a wire staple for each of said bristles, improved glue ejecting means actuated by said means for forming said staple comprising a cylinder, a plunger reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a nozzle mounted on one end of said cylinder, means for introducing adhesive to said cylinder, and plunger means for actuating said piston'for ejecting adhesive from said cylinder through said nozzle into said bristle guide from whence the adhesive is positioned in bores in a brush back prior to bristles being positioned in said bores. v In the drawings and'specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitations, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims. I claim:
1. In a brush making machine for inserting I bristles into bores in a brush blank and having till a bristle guidejprovided with a longitudinally. extending passageway for bristles, a hammer for. driving bristles through said bristle guide .and said machine also having a wire actuator for forming bristle holding staples driven in timed relation to said hammer and means for driving said machine including a first cam for actuating said wire actuator; adhesive dispensing means comprising a bracket secured to said machine, a plate adjustably secured to said bracket,'a cylinder mounted on said plate, a nozzle secured to one end of said cylinder and communicating with'the interior thereof, the bristle guidehaving a bore in one side thereof communicating with the passageway, the ejection end of said nozzle being positioned in the bore in the side of the bristle guide, means for introducing adhesive to said cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a plunger sup port block adjustably secured to said bracket, a plunger slidably mounted in said plunger support block, said plunger being parallel toand adjustably connected to said piston, a second cam, means connecting the second cam to the first cam, said second cam being positioned in alinement with said plunger, whereby rotation of said wire actuator cam will cause rotation of said second cam to actuate said plunger and said piston in said cylinder to dispense a predetermined amount of adhesive from the nozzle on said cylinder, and spring means positioned about said plunger and normally urging said plunger toward said second cam.
2. In a brush making machine for inserting bristles into bores in a brush blank and having a bristle-guideprovided with a longitudinally extending-passageway for bristles-a hammer for driving bristles through said bristle guide and said machine also having ,a wire actuator for forming bristle'holding staples :driven in timed relation to saidhammer and means for driving said -machine including a-first cam for actuating said wire actuator; said bristle guide having a bore in one side thereof communicating with the passageway, adhesive dispensing means comprising a bracket secured to said machine, a plate adjustably secured tosaid bracket, a cylinder mounted on saidplate, a nozzle secured to one end of said cylinder and communicating with the interior thereof, the ejection end of said nozzle being positioned in the bore in the side of the bristle guide, means for introducing adhesive to said cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a plunger support block adjustably secured to said bracket, a plunger slidably mounted in said plunger support block, said plunger being parallel to and adjustably connected tosaid piston, a second cam, means connecting the second cam to the first cam, said second cam being positioned in alinement with said plunger, whereby "rotation of said wire actuator cam will cause rotation of said second cam to actuate said plunger and said piston in said cylinder to dispense a predetermined amount of adhesive from the nozzle on said cylinder, and said means 'for introducing adhesive into said cylinder comprising an adhesive storage tankga line communicating with said adhesive storage tank and with said cylinder and serving as a support for said cylinder.
3. In a brush making machine for inserting bristles into bores in a brush blank and having a bristle guide provided with a longitudinally extending passageway for'bristles'a hammer for driving bristles through said bristle guide and said machine also having a wire actuator for forming bristle securing staples driven in timed relation to said hammerand means for driving said machine including a first cam for actuating said wire actuator; said bristle guide having a bore in one side thereof communicating with said passageway, means for dispensing predetermined amounts of adhesive in timed relation to the operation of said machine, comprising a bracketsecured to said machine, a cylinder adjustably mounted on said bracket, 'a nozzlesecured to one end of said cylinder and communicating with the interior thereof, the ejection end of said nozzle being positioned in the bore in one side of the bristle guide, means for introducing adhesive to said cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a plunger adjustably and slidably supported by said bracket, said plunger being adjustably connected to said piston and disposed in overlappingrelatio'n thereto, a second cam, a shaft adjustably connecting said second cam to said first cam for actuating said wire actuator, said second cam being positioned in alinement with said plunger, said plunger having a cam follower on the end thereof which is engaged by said second cam and spring means positioned about said plunger and normally urging the same toward the second cam, whereby rotation of said first cam will cause rotation of said second cam to actuate said plunger and said piston in said cylinder to dispense a predetermined amount of adhesive from the nozzle on saidfcylinder,

In a brush making ,machinefor inserting bristles into bores in a brush blankrandhaving- 8. a bristle guide provided with a longitudinally extending passageway, a hammer for driving bristles through said bristle guide and said machine also having a wire actuator for forming bristle securing staples driven in timed relation to said hammer and means for driving said'machine including a first cam for actuating said wire actuator; said bristle guide having a bore in one side thereof communicating with said passageway, meansfor dispensing predetermined amounts of adhesive in timed relation to the operation of said machine, comprising a bracket secured to said machine, a cylinder adjustably mounted on said bracket, a nozzle secured to one end of said cylinder and communicating with the interior thereof, the ejection end of said nozzle being positioned in said bore in one side of the bristle guide, means for introducing adhesive to said cylinder, a piston reciprocally mounted in said cylinder, a plunger adjustably and slidably supported by said bracket, said plunger being 'adjustably connected to said piston, a second cam, ashaft adjustably connecting said second cam'to saidfirst cam, said second cam being positioned in alinement with said plunger, said plunger having a cam follower on the end thereof which is engaged by said second cam, spring means positioned about said plunger and normally urging the'same toward the second cam, whereby rotation of said first cam will cause rotation of said second cam to actuate said plunger and said piston in said cylinder to dispense a predetermined amount of adhesive from the nozzle on said cylinder and said means 0 for introducing adhesive into said cylinder comprising an adhesive storage tank, a line communicating with said adhesive storage tank and with'said cylinder and serving as a'support for said cylinder.
5.
