rlhe present invention concerns electronic calculating machines and more particularly to mechanisms for translating the results delivered by such machines.
The object of the invention is to provide mechanism adapted to receive the output of a calculating machine and automatically to transfer a curve translating the output onto a sensitive paper, as successive points, the ordinates of the curve being supplied by the calculating machine.
Mechanism embodying the invention comprises substantially an electronic totalizer.with a capacity (Bn-1), B being the basis of the numeraton system according to which the machine operates, a totalizer connected to the outlet of the machine for registering the results delivered by the latter as impulses, a rotating registering cylinder provided with a driving motor, and capable of receiving, on its outer surface, a sensitive paper, a cylindrical drum, fast with the registering cylinder, a part of the lateral peripheral surface of which is constituted by a surface having alternately translucent and opaque areas, the number of the translucent areas of which is Bn, and the remainder of the lateral peripheral surface of which is constituted by an opaque surface, and a luminous supply source and a photo-electric cell arranged opposite each other, at xed points, on either side of the wall of the drum, said photoelectric cell being connected, through an impulse generator-amplier, with the totaliser, so that the impulses transmitted by the generator-amplifier are added to the impulses issued from the machine to the totalizer, the output of the last stage of the totalizer being connected to means arranged to impress the sensitive paper on the registering cylinder each time an output impulse is transmitted by the totalizer, said means being arranged on a support designed for parallel displacement in relation with the axis of the registering cylinder by a constant amount for each revolution turn of the latter, means being provided for rotating the registering cylinder and limiting said rotation to one turn each time a result is sup-plied by the machine to the totalizer, and for resetting the tctalizer to zero position at the end of each revolution of the registering cylinder.
The means to impress the sensitive paper on the registering drum may consist, for example, of an electric luminous supply source such as a xed spark gap or a bulb filled with an inert gas, in which case the sensitive paper may be a photographic paper. The supply source is connected to the output of the totalizer through a member or means such as a thyratron, capable of deliver- 2 ing a discharge current to the supply source, and an optical system is provided for projecting the image of the supply source onto the sensitive paper. The pap-er may also be an electrolytic paper of a known kind adapted to be marked by an electrode, and the printing means may comprise an electrode arranged to rub on the paper.
The support for the printing means may consist of a carriage connected by a nut or the like to a rotatable threaded rod extending parallel with the axis of the registering cylinder and being connected with the shaft of the latter by a gear or system of gears.
For setting the registering cylinder into rotation, and limiting said rotation to one turn, means may be provided for controlling the motor itself, such means being of a known type capable of being actuated through an impulse delivered by the machine. A one revolution clutch of any known type may also be used, being inserted between the motor and the shaft of the registering cylinder, said clutch being controlled by a relay actuated by an impulse generated by the machine.
To reset the totalizer to zero, an opaque disc or similar element is keyed on the shaft of the registering cylinder and is provided with a window, the angular position of which is the same as that of the opaque surface constituting part of the impulse control drum fast with the registering cylinder, a luminous supply source and a photoelectric cell being arranged, facing each other on either side of this disc, at xed points, and the cell being connected, through a pulse generatoramplifier to means for resetting the totalizer to zero. For this purpose, a device controlled by the output impulse issu-ed from the totalizer may be arranged for interrupting the connection between the totali'rer and the impulse generator-ampliiier connected to the photo-electric cell cooperating with the above mentioned drum.
The invention will be hereafter described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic and schematic View showing a preferred embodiment of the invention, suitable for use in connection with a machine operating in the binary system.
Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view, showing a drum controlling the impuises and a zero resetting control disc.
As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the illustrative device or mechanism comprises a registering cylinder i, carrying a photo-sensitive paper 2, and the shaf t of which is connected with the shaft of an electric driving motor li. On the shaft supply source and a photoelectric cell facing each other and being respectively in fixed locations on either side of the Wall of said drum, an amplilier-generator of impulses so connecting said photoelectric cell with said totalizer that the impulses generated by the amplifier-generator are added to said impulses delivered by said machine to said totalizer, means connected to the output of the last stage of said totalizer and arranged to impress said sensitive paper every time that an output impulse is delivered by said totalizer, a support for said means arranged for displacement in a direction parallel to the axis of said registering cylinder and a constant amount for each rotation of said registering cylinder, means to control and limit to one turn the rotation of said registering cylinder each time a result is supplied by said machine to said totalizer, and means for zeroizing said totalizer at the end of, each revolution of said registering cylinder.

The combination with an electronic calculating machine capable of delivering calculated results by impulses, of a device for tracing curves relative to the calculations performed by said machine and comprising: an electronic stage totalizer of a capacity of (Bm-1), B being the basis of the numeration system according to which said machine operates, means connecting said electronic totalizer to said machine for receiving the output of said machine for registering the results delivered by said machine as impulses, a rotative registering cylinder, a sensitive paper on the external surface of said registering cylinder, a driving motor for said registering cylinden. a cylindrical drum fast with said registering cylinder, the lateral surface of said drum being constituted, on one part of its periphery with a surface presenting alternatively translucent and opaque sections, said translucent sections being in number B, the remaining part of the periphery of said lateral surface of said drum presenting an opaque surface, a luminous supply source and a photoelectric cell facing each other and being respectively in fixed loca-- tions on either side of the Wall of .said drum, an ampliiier-generator of impulses so connecting said photoelectric cell with said totalizer that the impulses generated by the amplifier-generator are added to said impulses delivered by said machine to said totalizer, an electric luminous source, means connecting said electric luminous source to said totalizer and including a device for supplying a discharge current to said electric luminous source every time an output impulse is delivered by said totalizer, an optical device for projecting the image of said luminous source onto said sensitive paper for forming an impression on said paper, a support for said electric luminous source mounted for displacement, in a direction parallel to the axis of said registering cylinder, and a constant amount for each rotation of said registering cylinder, means to control and limit to one turn the rotation of said registering cylinder each time a result is supplied by said machine to said totalizer, and means for zeroizing said totalizer at the end of each revolution of said registering cylinder.

The combination with an electronic calculating machine capable of delivering calculated results by impulses, of a device for tracing curves relative to the calculations performed by said machine and comprising: an electronic stage totalizer of a capacity of (Bn-1), B being the basis of the numeration system according to which said machine operates, means connecting said electronic totalizer to said machine for receiving the output of said machine for registering the results delivered by said machine as impulses, a rotative registering cylinder, a sensitive paper on the external surface of said registering cylinder, a driving motor for said registering cylinder, a cylindrical drum fast with said registering cylinder, the lateral surface oi said drum being constituted on one part of its periphery with a surface presenting alternatively translucent and opaque sections, said translucent sections being in number Bn, the remaining part of the periphery of said lateral surface of said drum presenting an opaque surface, a luminous supply source and a photoelectric cell facing each other and being respectively in xed locations on either side of the wall of said drum, an amplifier-generator of impulses so connecting said photoelectric cell with said totalizer that the impulses generated by the amplifier-generator are added to said impulses delivered by said machine to said totalizer, means connected to the output of the last stage of said totalizer and being operable thereby to impress said sensitive paper every time that an output impulse is delivered by said totalizer, a support for said means mounted for displacement, in a direction parallel to the axis of said registering cylinder, and a constant quantity for each rotation of said registering cylinder, means to control and limit to one turn the rotation of said registering cylinder each time a result is supplied by said machine to said totalizer, an opaque disc keyed on the shaft of said registering cylinder, a Window in said opaque disc the angular position of which is the same as that of said opaque surface constituting one part of said drum fast With said registering cylinder, a second luminous supply source and a second photoelectric cell facing each other and being respectively on either side of said disc and located in xed points, devices for zeroizing said totalizer, and an amplier-generator of impulses connecting said second photoelectric cell to said zeroizing devices.
