Description

A. DUTTINE BAG IOCK April 20, 1954 Fil ed Aug. 5 1951 .H0/9M D u frm/5,.
INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 20, i 1954 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE Claims priority, application Germany August 4, 1950 4 Claims.
This invention relates Yto a mortise lock for pouches, briefcases, trunks or similar receptacles.
Locks of this type usually comprise a lower part including va loop or staple rising from a base plate, while the upper part is formed by a tongue or strap adapted to be inserted under the staple, the said strap being provided with a locking member which can be depressed against the action of a spring and which underlies the staple after the strap has been pushed under the staple. It is also known to provide in the strap of such a lock a control member which, by means of a key, can be moved from an inoperative position into an operative position under the iniiuence of the locking member, thus preventing the locking member, usually designed as a push plate, from being depressed. It has also been proposed to provide the insert strap with two depressable locking members arranged on both sides of the strap and adapted to be pressed into the latter. However, to release these locking members, two fingers must be used.
The present invention concerns a new construction for a mortise lock with two mutually independent locking members adapted to be pressed into the strap by one finger against the action of a spring, and which can be locked against depression by means of a key. That is to say, the lock according to the present invention comprises va strap adapted to be inserted under a staple of the lower part of the lock with two mutually independent locking members capable of being depressed against the action of a spring, and a control member, actuated by a key, for the two locking members, the latter being constituted by ribs adapted to be depressed through slots in the cover plate of the upper side of the strap, the said ribs converging after the fashion of a V in the insert direction of the strap. Thus, to open the lock, the ribs can easily be depressed with a single linger. The control member consists preferably of a small plate rockably mounted on the base plate of the insert strap and provided with two upwardly bent tongues which, in one end position of the small plate, move under the locking ribs thus preventing the latter from being pressed into the strap.
The invention is hereinafter explained more in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
'Figure l is a plan view of the new insert strap.
Figure 2 is a cross-section along line II-II of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail diagrammatic plan views showing the base plate of the strap with the control plate in the inoperative and the operative position, respectively.
`The insert strap consists, in known manner, of a base plate 3 provided with attaching iiaps I, 2, and cover plate i provided with the bent edge 55 which overlaps a corresponding edge portion 5 on the plate 3. The cover plate has two longitudinal slots l converging in the insert direction after the fashion of a V and in which are provided ribs 8 which serve as locking members. Ribs 8 are rockable about a bar axis 9 supported by edge E o1 cover plate 4. The rocking ends of the ribs are provided with noses IB which limit the passage of the ribs 8 through slots 1.
Pin II on base plate 3 supports a control plate I2 provided with two upward bent tongues I3. The construction of plate l2 and of tongues I3 is such that in one end position of the control plate i2, tongues I3 will be outside the path oi depression of locking members 3 (Figure 3), whereas in the other end position they come to rest under the looking members (Figure 4), with the result that it will be impossible to depress the locking members B.
Base plate 3 has a pressed-in projection lli to which correspond two notches I5 on Control plate I2. These notches are arranged in such a way that in either one of the end positions of control plate I2, one of the two notches I5 engages projection I4, thus preventing any undesired rocking motion on the part of the control plate.
A spring IS is led around bar axis 9. Ends Il of said spring extend into the two locking members 8, whereas its mid-section I t bears against the control plate I2.
A lock cylinder l 9 for a key is provided in suitable recesses between base plate 3 and cover plate #i of the insert strap. Control plate l2 has an opening 2l) in which engages the bit of a key inserted in cylinder IS. Depending on the direction of rotation, the said bit, in known manner, moves the control plate from the ineffective into the effective locking position, and vice versa.
I claim:
l. A bag lock, comprising, a strap adapted to be inserted under the staple of the mating portion of the lock, said strap including a base plate and a cover plate with edge flanges and having slots in the portion between the edge flanges, mutually independent depressable locking meinbers hinged to the inner side of the cover plate adjacent the slots therein, springs for urging the free ends of the members outwardly of the cover plate, a control plate pivotally carried by the base and having remote from its pivot axis a pair of offset tongues spaced apart a distance equal to that of the contiguous portions of the locking members, and key operated means for shifting the control plate to bring the tongues thereof into and out of the path of the depressable locking members, each tongue when in the path of a locking member being disposed between same and the base plate.
2. A bag lock according to claim 1, wherein the control plate and base plate at one side of the pivot for the control plate are provided with interengaging friction elements to hold the plate in locking or unlocking position.
3. A bag lock according to claim 1, wherein the slots and locking members are angularly disposed and converge in the direction of the end of the strap which is insertable under the mating portion of the lock.
4. A bag lock comprising a strap adapted to be inserted under the staple of the mating portion of the lock, said strap including a base plate and a cover plate having slots, mutually independent depressable locking members hinged to the inner side of the cover plate adjacent the slots therein, springs for urging the free ends of the members outwardly of the cover plate, a
control plate pivotally carried by the base and having remote from its pivot axis a pair of oiset tongues spaced lapart a distance equal to that of the contiguous portions of the locking members, each of said springs for the depressable locking members including a portion reacting against the pivoted control plate to urge same toward the base plate, and key operated means for shifting the control plate to bring the tongues thereof into and out of the path of the depressable locking members.
