STATES PATENT Trice- NrTa rv-GUARD Foa ELEvAToR-HATCHWAYS.
SAF
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,541, dated November 14, 1882.
Application filed March 3l, 1882. (No model.)
H is a vertical extension of the platform C, at one side of thesame, near its'froiit edge, and in such a position relatively to the lever F that in the travel of the elevator up and down through the hatchway the'edge or side m of the extension will bear and press against the side a ofthe lower arm, f, ot' the lever F, and, swinging it on its fulci'um, swing the up- )erlever, forthepurposeshercinai'terdescribed.
l at o on the back side gate, and in such manner that the gravity of the pawl, when it is left free to swing on its pivot, will swing its lower end from and beyond the end of the gate in line with the upper end of thele'ver Gr when such lever is swung iii the right direction therefor.
When the elevator is at or near the floor its To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, EDWARD G. KENDALL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Elevator-Hatchways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in self-closing hatchway-guards, ranged to operate automatically by the elevator as it moves from the floor in either direction in its travel through the hachway or opening.
My invention consists in a novel combination of gate arranged to slide vertically on guideways, with a verticallypivoied lever, having its upper end provided with means to engage and retain the gate in an elevated position, while the lower end of the lever is diextension H presses on the lower arm, j, of lerectl acted on by the elevator-platform, all as ver F, and, swinging it, causes the upper end, more fully hereinafter described, and pointed p of lever G to be swung forward into such out in the claims.
position tliatif the gn ard or gate be then raised ln the accompanying plate of drawings this it will be there held in such raised position by invention is illustrated, Figure lbeing a vertical section of an elevator hatchway or openthe pawl J, resting on the upper end of lever ing in a floor and the surrounding casing,
G, being there held as long` -as the elevatorplattorm is at or near the door and the extenlooking toward the guard or gate from the sion H in contact with the arm f of lever F. hatchway or opening, the guard beingin its elevated position. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical The pin q iu the gate and slot fr in the pawl regulate the movements of the pawl, either to section at right angles to Fig. l, the elevator above the door, and the gate in position to hold the pawl in its rest on the lever or to al- ;low it to move sufficiently to freely pass the guard the elevator hatchway or opening. lever if the guard is raised when the elevatorplatform is at the door. When the elevator In the accompanying plate of drawings, represents the oor of a building, having an leaves going up or down elevator hatchway or opening, B, in which is the iioor in either and the extension passes from contact with arranged to travel in any of the usual ways the elevator-platform C.
the lever F, then, by the reaction of a spiral D is the guard or gate. This guard or gate spring, K, secured by one end. to the arm j of lever F and by its other end to the casing, the
D is arranged to be raised and lowered in front of the hatchway or opening B, and in such lever F will be swung on its pivot and cause the upper lever, Gr,to disconnect with the pawl movements it is guided by grooves a in plates each end of the gate or guard D,
on the gate, which will then by its own weight are adapted to slide on the vertical strips to the casing E in proper poof and at one end fall to its position to guard and protect the hatchway or opening. The spring K holds the arm f of lever F in proper position for the extension H of the platform to strike and bear against it, as described. By this arrangement of the levers F and Gr with the spring the guard will only be held in its elevated position when the elevator is at the door or near to bear and press -lever F. Consequently down and which or ribs c, secured sition therefor.
F is a lever pivoted to the casing E at d, at one corner of the hatchway B, its lower arm, extending into the hatchway, as shown more enough for its extension against the sprin when the elevator has passed np or it engages with the lower end, h, of a vertical lever, Gr, pivoted at i to the side casin g.
