This invention relates to attachments for sewing machines, and in particular a garland and ornamental fringe attachment having pivotally mounted cutting knives actuated by the needle bar of the machine with the material drawn through the machineby the pressure foot and treadle thereof wherein the knives cut inwardly from the edges providing an uncut strip at the center. v

The purpose of; this invention is to provide means for utilizing the reciprocating .action of the needle bar of a sewing machine for operating knives for cutting ornamental materials and also the beating action of the treadle and pressure foot for drawing the material under the cutting knives.

Various attachments have been provided for sewing machines and garland and ornamental fringe have been formed on different types of -'.machines and wherein sewing machines have";

been used by the use of various types of attachments for different purposes, attachments of this type operate in a plane aligned with the line of travel or stitching and for ornamental use it has been found desirable to operate cutting elements transversely of the line of travel and whereby slits are formed in a plane perpendicular to the plane extended through the line of travel. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an attachment positioned on the bed of a sewing machine with a pair of cutting blades pivotally mounted in the outer ends and with the blades freely connected to the needle bar of the machine whereby the blades cut edges of a strip of material drawn through the machine by the pressure foot and treadle.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting cutting knives for slittingedges of material so that the knives may be actuated by the needle bar of a sewing machine without placing lateral strain in the needle bar.

Another object of the invention is to provide a garland and ornamental fringe attachment for sewing machines that may be positioned on the machine without changing the design or arrangement thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cutting attachment for sewing machines in which cutting knives are actuated by the needle bar of the machine, which is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a base plate hav ing a feathered forward edge, a pair of cutting blades pivotally mounted on the outer ends of the base plate, a centrally positioned frame extended perpendicularly upward from the base plate, a slider positioned on said frame and having an arm extended to coact with the needle bar of a sewing machine on the bed of which the base plate is positioned and means connecting the cutting blade to the slider and the base plate to the bed of the machine.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

Figure l is a plan view of the attachment.

Figure 2 is a front elevational view looking toward, the side. of the attachment positioned adjacent the sewing machine head.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the attachment taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a detail illustrating a section of a fringe or garlandiormed on the machine.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the garland and ornamental fringe attachment of this invention includes a base plate Hi, cutting blades 5 l and It, a vertically positioned centrally disposed frame 13, a slider l4, and guides l5 and iii extended from the base and attached thereto by bars H and I9.

The base it is provided with a substantially U-shape opening iilthat straddles the pressure foot 2i} and treadle 2! of a sewing machine upon which the attachment is positioned and the base is attached to the bed of the machine by

22 and 23. The edge of the base around the opening it and extended diagonally toward the outer end is provided with a feathered edge 24-to facilitate material, as indicated by the dotted lines 25 sliding under the pressure foot.

The intermediate part 26 of the base is provided with a centrally disposed slot or opening 2'? through which the material passes and a slot 28 is positioned below the opening through which tape as indicated by the numeral 29 may pass whereby tape passed through the slot 28 may be secured to the under surface of material passing over the section 26 of the base.

Blocks 3%] and 3| are secured to the ends of the base by

32 and 33, respectively and the blocks are provided with

35 and 35 having heads 35 and iii respectively and, as illustrated in Figure -2 the

34 and 35 extend through slots 38 and 3a in the outer ends of the cutting knives H and i2, respectively.

The frame I3 is formed with outwardly extended sections 40 and 4! and the section 40 is 3 provided with a. flange 42 that is secured to the upper end of the block 30 by a nut 43 on the bolt 32 and the section 4| is provided with a flange 44 that is secured to th upper end of the block 3| by a nut 45 on the bolt 33.

The frame I3 is provided with a backing plate 46 that is secured in position by screws and 48 and the slider 14 is held in position on the face of the plate 46 by guides 49 having downwardly extended arms 50 and The guide with the arms is secured to the member 46 by screws 52.

As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 an arm 53 is mounted on th slider through a bearing element 54 and the inner ends of the cutting blades H and I2 are connected to the {bearing 54 by

links

55 and 56 with the lower ends of the links pivotally connected to the blades by

51 and 58 respectively and the upper ends pivotally connected to the bearing 54 by

pins

59 and 60, respectively. The arm 53 is attached to the hearing 54 by screws 5! and 62 and the bearing is attached to the slider through a block 63, which extends upwardly from the intermediate part of the bearing, by screws 64 and 65.

The upper part of the frame I3 is provided with a positioning screw 66, the outer end of which is provided with a head 61, and the screw is secured in position by a lock nut 68.

The base is also provided with spacing strips i H and 12 that are secured to the sections 40 and 4!, respectively of the frame by

13 and 14.

The outer ends of the guide angles [5 and [6 are provided with slots and 16 through which the angles are connected to the outer ends of the bars I! and It by bolts 11 and I8 and, as illustrated in Figure 1, the inner ends of the bars 11 and i 9 are connected to the base I 0 by bolts 19 and 89, respectively.

The end of the arm 53 that extends outwardly from the slider of the attachment is provided with an inwardly extended slot 8| that is positioned over the screw 82 of the needle :bar 83 of the sewing machine and with this connection comparatively free the needle bar operates without lateral strains being applied thereto by the attachment.

With the parts arranged in this manner and with the inner ends of the cutting knives or blades retained in spaced relation a strip of material fed through the attachment as indicated by the dotted lines shown in Figure 3 is slit inwardly in spaced relation from the outer edges with a continuous strip remaining at the center and with the strip fed through the pressure foot and treadle of the sewing machine it is'advanced with each movement of the needle bar whereby the edges of the strip are cut continuously into comparatively small strands.

By feeding a tape as indicated by the dotted lines 29 through the slot 28 under the strip of material the tape may be attached to the under surface of the strip of material to reinforce the same.

With the parts operating in this manner a strip of material is provided with slits 84 whereby the edges are formed into elongated fingers or strips 85, as shown in Figure 4 and the tape 29 may be secured by stitching 86 to the intermediate section 81 of the strip of material.

The distance between the slits may be regulated to form extending fingers or strips of any suitable width and the material may be of any suitable color.

It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

An attachment for use on a sewing machine having a [bed plate, a needle bar, a pressure foot,
