This invention relates to a cosmetic applicator for eyelashes and relates more particularly to a novel eyelash beautifying device which permits the combing of the hairs of the eyelash while applying the mascara or oil thereto.-

An important object of the present invention is to provide an improved support for curved brush and comb elements which enables the cosmetic to be applied to the eyelashes while at the same time separating the individual hairs and preventing the caking of the applied cosmetic.

The present application constitutes a continua tion-in-part of my co-pending application Serial No. 148,601, now Patent No. 2,611,375, issued September 23, 1952, and discloses some specific improvements in the invention disclosed therein. More particularly the present application discloses improved means for supporting the detachable comb and brush elements and enables them to be readilyrem'oved for cleaningpurposes and for interchange of the members for the application of different kinds of cosmetics.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved shape of brush and comb elements to permit the more ready application of the cosmetic while preventing the undesired adhesion of thehairs to each other.

The holder may be formed from wire and it may comprise a frame formed of wire orlike material and having divergent arms l0 and l i which are joined together at their lower ends as by twisting to form a handle section, the upper end of which is shown at l2.

A comb I3 is formed from suitable metal or plastic material and is of curved contour. The teeth l4 may be of substantially the same length GClaims. ((1132-19) but if it is desired togive their upper terminals a c'onvexly curved contour they emanate from an upper curved edge section l5. Accordingly the working ends of the teeth have a dual curvature which aids considerably in the element performing its combing operation.

The brushing element I6 is molded from plastic material or is formed from sheet material and has a similarly formed upper edge II from which clusters of bristles 20 extend, the upper ends thereof being on substantially the same plane as those of the'comb.

The comb and brush are mounted in spaced relation in brackets 2| formed from sheet material which are suitably secured as by welding at the upper ends 22 of the divergent arms. Each bracket is substantially W shaped when viewed from the top to form

23 and 24 to receive the terminals of the brush and comb elements. The "brackets 2| should be formed of resilient material and the width of each socket should be slightly less than the thickness of the brush and comb elements so as to support the terminals thereof in frictional engagement.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the divergent arms 29 and 353 are formed substantially as in the first embodiment of the invention. In this case, however, the brush and comb supporting brackets 3 I may be formed from sheet metal, secured as by a pin 23 at the upper ends of the arms, and extending downwardly from the upper ends of the brackets are

32 and 33 which are inwardly tapered towards their lower ends. The comb and brush elements 35 and 36, respectively, are force-fitted within the

tapered slots

32 and 33 but are readily removable therefrom.

In the next form of the'invention shown in Figs. 6, '7 and 8, the divergent arms 4| and 420i the frame are provided at their upper ends with substantially U-shaped brackets 43 and in this instance the upper terminal M of each. arm is flattened and apin 55 extends between the two walls of the U-shaped bracket and through the upper flattened section. The parts may be secured together as by means of welding. In this instance the comb and brush elements is and 49. have cut-away sections on the lower edges. of their terminals as shown at 59. Here again the brackets are formed from resilient sheet metal so as to provide a desired measure of frictional or gripping action upon the terminals of the comb and brush. In this instance the pins -45 limits downward movement of the comb and brush elements.

In the final form of the invention shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the arms 55 of the frame have reduced flattened sections 56 at their upper ends which pass through a similarly shaped opening in the lower wall 51 of a U-shaped bracket 58. The flattened upper terminals of the arms form shoulders 59 and the lower wall 51 may be secured to the shoulder by means of welding. v

In use, the mascara, oil or other cosmetic material may be applied to the brush in the usual fashion and the brush is then applied to the eye lashes in the usual fashion. The comb element trails the brush and as the liquid preparation is received on the hairs the comb passes through the hair before the cosmetic has had a chance to dry and the individual hairs are thus'separated and caking is prevented.

While four forms or embodiments of the invention have been shown and described herein for illustrative purposes, and the construction and arrangement incidentaluto. four :specificapplications thereof have been,disclosedxand-dis cussedin detail, it is to be understood ,that .the'

invention is limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement of parts, nor to its specific embodiments shown herein, but the extensive deviations from the illustrated forms or embodiments of the invention may be made without departing from the principles thereof.

What Iiclaim is: a

1. A combined eyelash comb and brush structure comprising a frameincluding a lower handle portion and upwardly extending, diverging arms, comb and brush elements, and means at the upper ends of the arms 'for detachably supporting said comb and brush elements in spaced relation, said means, comprisinga bracket at the upper end of each arm having spaced recesses extending downwardly'from its upper end, the walls of said recesses receiving the terminals of the comb and brush elements in forced-fit relation, said comb'element being arcuately curved when viewed from above and which is provided with spaced teeth extending upwardly from its upper edge, the teeth being of such length that the upper terminals thereof form a convexly curved arc, the brush element being similarly shaped and being formed with bristles whose upper terminals are aligned generally with the teeth of the comb element.

2. A combined eyelash brush and comb structure comprising a frame including a lower handle portion and upwardly extending, diverging arms, brush and combelements, and means at the upper ends of the arms for detachably-supporting the brush and comb elements in spaced relation, said means comprising a resilient bracket formed of sheet metal at the'upper end of each arm having inwardly facing, vertical recesses, the

walls of said recessesreceiving the terminals of the comb and brush elements :in spring-V-urged relation, said comb. element being arcuately curved when viewed from above.

3. A combined eyelash brush and comb structure comprising a frame includinga lower handle portion and upwardly extending, diverging arms, brush and comb elements, and means at the upper ends of the arms for detachably supporting said comb and brush elements in closely spaced, generally parallel relation, said means comprising a sheet metal bracket at the upper end of each arm having inwardly facing, vertical recesses, the walls of said recesses receiving the terminals of the comb and brush elements in spring-urged relation, said comb element being curved when viewed from above and which is provided with spaced teeth extendingupwardly from its upper edge, the teeth being of such length that the upper terminals thereof form a convexly curved arc, the brush element being similarly shaped and being formed with bristles whose upper terminals are aligned generally with the teeth of the comb element.

4. Acombined eyelash brush and comb structure comprising a frame including a lower handle portion and upwardly extending, diverging arms, comb and brush elements, and means at the upper ends of the arms for detachably supporting the comb and brush elements in spaced relation,

comb and brush elements, and means at the upper ends of. the arms for detachably supportmg the comb and. brush elements in closely spaced, generally parallel relation, said'means comprising a bracket at the upper end ofeach' arm having an inwardly facing recess, a pin pass-- ing between the walls forming the recess and through the upper end of the arm, thus dividing the area into two recessesv which receive the terminals of the comb and brush elements in forcedfit relation, said comb and brush elements being arcuately curved when viewed .from above.

6. A combined eyelash comb and brush structure comprising a frame including a lower handle portion and upwardly extending, diverging arms, comb and brush elements, and means at the upper ends of the arms for detachably supporting the comb and brush elementsin spaced relation, said means comprising a U-shaped, resilient bracket at the upper end of each arm, the arm passing through the lower wall of the bracket, thus dividing the area between the vertical walls into two spaced recesses, the walls of said recesses receiving the terminals of the comb and brush elements'in spring-urged relation, said comb and brush elements being arcuately curved when viewed from above.
