This invention relates to a device for feeding and coating articles and more particularly to a mechanism for feeding insulator cards having terminals thereon and for oiling the projecting ends of terminals of the cards as they are fed.
An object of the present invention is to provide an effective and efficient device for feeding articles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of simple construction for applying a coating to surfaces of the articles as they are fed.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention as applied to an apparatus for processing cards having terminals thereon, there is provided a magazine for guiding a stack of cards and a mechanism for supporting the stack of cards in the magazine andsuccessively releasing the bottom card therefrom onto a pivoted transfer member which swings the card into a predetermined position where the ends of the terminals are gripped between a pair of oil impregnated pads on a second pivoted transfer member, which in turn moves the card into engagement with a holder on the card process-ing apparatus. The second transfer member is moved from the holder in the plane of the card to cause the card to be disengaged from the second transfer member and to cause a film. of oil to be wiped onto the ends of the terminals as they are withdrawn from between the oil pads.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description thereof and the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Fig. l is a plan View of the device for feeding and oiling cards shown as applied to a portion of the card processing apparatus;

Referring to the drawings (Figs. 1, 2, and 5), the device is adapted to release the lowermost one of a stack of cards l5 arranged ina magazine I6 and deposit it onto the guide pins I8 on a holder I9 mounted on a rotatable feed table or carrier of an apparatus for attaching the cards and terminals to conductor wires for fabrication into telephone equipment. The carrier 29 is intermittently indexed to advance successive holders I9 into position to receive the cards. The cards l5 (Figs. 2 and 3) comprise an arcuate strip of phenol iiber insulation provided with a pair of aligning apertures 2G and having a plurality of terminal members 28 secured thereto. The ends 29 of the terminals 28 extend from one side edge of the card and are adapted to be engaged by a wiper contact of the telephone apparatus into which the cards are iinally assembled and the other ends of the terminals project 'from the other edge of the card andare provided with upwardly extending nanges '30-381 providing a U- shaped sleeve forming portion 3| adapted to be attached to insulation covered wires of the telephone apparatus.
The magazine I6 comprises a pair of corner posts or bars vertically recessed at 36 to receive the ends of the cards l5 therein and a pair of rods .3S-38 disposed to engage the rear edge of the cards l5 between a pair of adjacent terminals Z3. The lower end of the posts l35 are secured to irregularly shaped frame plates or brackets fixed to a frame member 42 (Figs. l, 4, and 5). The member 42 is supported on a stationary plate 44 disposed above the rotatable feed table 20. Brackets or straps 41 fixed to the posts 35 serve to support the rods 38.

Theupper supporting elements are slidably mounted on the lower elements and the upper and lower ones are mounted for reciprocable movement in opposite directions to release successive cards from the lower end of the stack. The supporting elements 55 and 55 are in the form of narrow iingers adapted to t between the ends 29 of the central pair of terminal members on the cards |5 and are formed as projections on plates 'l0 and respectively. The plates l and 1| (Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 10) are mounted for sliding movement relative to each other in an aperture l2 in the lower end of a bar 'i3 and the ends of the plates 'i 0 and 'il are guided for sliding horizontal movement in guide slots` iii-15 in the bar '13. The bar '.'3 is secured to cross members 76-l6 which in turn are secured to the post 35. rEhe lower and upper supporting members 50 and 6B (Figs. 1, 6, '7, and 9) are wide enough to engage a plurality of terminals 28 and are secured to plates 80, 0|, respectively. The lower and upper supporting members 51, 58, 6l, and 60 are adapted to engage and support the endmost terminals 23 on the cards i5' andare likewise secured to the slide plates 80 and 0|, respectively. The ends of the slide plates 80 and 0| are guided for horizontal movement in guideways 33-03 (Figs. 7 and 9) formed in side frame members 85 and 06 secured to and supported from the lower end of the posts 35.
A mechanism is provided for reciprocating the card supporting members which comprises a rock shaft 90 journalled in the frame members 85 and 35 and having a double crank arm 9| xed thereto to the opposite ends of which are connected links 92 and 93 which are pivotally connected to the slide plates 00 and 0|. Another rock shaft 95 also journalled in the frames 35 and 86 has'a double crank arm SE secured thereto and to the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected links 91 and 90 which in turn are pivotally connected to the plates it and The rock shafts 90 and 95 are connected together for simultaneous oscillation in opposite directions by arms |0| and |02 connected to the ends of the shafts 90 and 95, respectively, and interconnected by a link |03. The arm 0| is formed integral with the lever arm |05 which is pivotally connected to one end of a piston rod |06 of a piston l0? which is reciprocable within a cylinder |08. The cylinder |08 which has air lines |09 vand H0 connected thereto to admit air under pressure to actuate the piston and the card release mechanism in opposite directions is pivotally connected at its-upper end ||2 to a frame member 3 fixed to the post 35 at one end and at its other end connected by a bar H4 to the frame member 85. Thus, in response vto the actuation of the piston |07 the lower plates i0 and 80 and the upper plates 'H and 8| are caused to reciprocate to alternately advance and retract the card supporting member 55 relative to the members 56, 51, and 58 and the member $5 relative to the members 66, 07, and 68, and the upper and lower members relative to each other successively to cause the lowermost one of the stack of cards to be released.
As successive cards from the stack are released they fall upon a transfer plate |20 (Figs. 5, 7, and 9) which has a pair of tapered aligning or retaining pins |2| engageable in the apertures 23 in the card. The plate |20 is roughly V-shaped and has a pair of apertured bearing members |22 freely mounted on the rock shaft 90 for supporting the plate |20 for free oscillation about the shaft. On a laterally extending portion |23 of the plate |20 a double crank arm |24 is xed to one end of which is pivotally con- CII nected a piston rod |25 (Fig. 5) on a piston |23 which is reciprocable within a cylinder l2?. The cylinder |21 has pipe lines |23 and |20 connected thereto for admitting actuating iluid therein and is pivotally connected at its upper end |30 to a frame member |34. The frame member |34 is secured at one end to the post 35 and is supported by a member 35 connected at its lower end to the frame member 8B. Pivotally connected at |33 to the other arm ci the double crank arm |22 is the lower end of a yoke or bifurcated link |39 which has a cross arm |130 (Figs. 5 and 9) at its upper end. The cross arm |20 is connected to a piston |43 of a dashpot M5 disposed between the spaced arms of the bifurcated yoke |39. A member |46 of the dashpot has a pair of opposed recesses for receiving pivot mounting pins |48|Ll8 which extend through slots |43 in the arms of the yoke |39 and are secured in the spaced arm portions |50 of a loop formed in the frame member |34 for receiving the yoke |30 and the dashpot |25 therein.
In response to the actuation of the piston |25 the transfer plate |20 is caused to move from a substantially horizontal position directly below the stack of cards (Fig. 5) to a substantially vertical position (Fig. 4) to transfer the card l5 onto a second transfer arm and oiling device |53 at an angular position intermediate the horizontal and substantially vertical positions. The dashpot |45 which is of the hydraulic type controls the downward movement of the transfer plate |20 and the card thereon to ei'ect a relatively slow movement from the horizontal position to the intermediate position to permit the card to be transferred to and gripped by the second transfer and oiling device |53 and then to permit a rapid or free movement of the transfer plate |20 to its substantially vertical position.
The second transfer device |53 comprises a plate |88 pivotally connected at |89 to the forked lower end of a supporting plate |20. A portion |9| of the plate |83 extends beyond the pivot |89 and is pivotally connected at |02 to a piston rod |93 of a piston |92 movable in a cylinder |33, which in turn is pivotally connected at its upper end |96 to a lug 91 iixed to the supporting plate |90. A pair of pipe lines |90 and |99 direct the low of compressed air to the opposite ends of the cylinder to eifect reciprocation of the piston and the oscillation of the plate |23 about the pivot |25. At its forward end the plate |83 is bifurcated and has pivotally connected thereto at 20| a movable jaw 202, a part of which is substantially circular. The movable jaw 202 has a lug 203 thereon which is pivotally connected to the piston rod 204 of a piston 205 reciprocable in a cylinder 206 which in turn is pivotally connected to a. lug 208 on the plate |38. lipe lines 2|0 and 2|| connected to the cylinder 202 direct the uid into the cylinder for reciprocating the piston 205 and oscillating the movable jaw 202 to and from open and closed positions. A set screw 2|2 limits the movement of the jaw 202 in one direction to its closed position.
IThe bifurcated divergent ends 2i or" the plate (Fig. 8) are provided with guide recesses 254 for receiving and positioning the ends of a card i5 on the transfer member |53. The ends of ends of the card i5 are supported on end portions 2|5 or" a plate 2|0 xed to the lower side of the plate |88 at one end thereof. Between the ends 2| 5, the plate 2| 6 is cut away to provide clearance for the movement of the end of the transfer plate |20. .Felt pads 220 and22| `having convex peripheries conforming substantial tothe inner curvatureof the `cards 25 aresecured to the plate 2 I6 and the jaw 202, respectively. The jaw 202 is provided `with a groove 22.3 in the convex edge portion through a substantial portion of the arcuate periphery-thereof and a plu rality of holes 224 establish communication between the groove 223 and the felt pad 22|. Oil from a stationary oil supply pipe 226 (Fig. 5) drops at a controlled rate into the groove 223 and is distributed through the holes 224 to the felt pad 22|, and when the jaw is closed some of the oil from the pad 22 I -is transferred to the pad 220 to maintain the pads supplied with oil.
When a card I5 is moved bythe plate |20 from the magazine to the intermediate or dotted line position as shown in Fig. 5, the end portions 29 of the terminals on the card are disposed above and in engagement with the pad 220, and the jaw 202 is actuated to its closed position to grip the ends of the terminals between the oil pads 220 and 22| to securely hold the card i5 as the transfer plate |20 continues its movement to a substantially vertical position. Air
admitted through the line |99 to the cylinder |95 causes the plate |88 to be oscillated to its lower position (Fig. 4) to move the card I 5 onto the card holder |9 of the feed table 20 with the aligning pins I8 in engagement with the apertures 26 in the card. The plate |88 is then moved horizontally to the left as viewed in Fig. 4 to disengage the card I5 from between the oiling and gripping pads 220 and V22| by means comprising a cylinder 230 (Figs. 1, 4, and 5) to one end of which the supporting plate |90 is secured.
The cylinder 230 is mounted for sliding movem ment in a guideway 23| formed in the frame member 42 and has a bore or cylinder chamber 232 for receiving a piston 233 therein. The piston 233 has a piston rod 234 secured to a stationary lug 235 on the frame 42 to secure the piston against movement. Pipe lines 237 and 238 (Fig. 4) direct uid from an air line 239 under control of a solenoid'valve 240 to opposite ends of the cylinder 230 to cause a movement of the cylinder relative tothe fixed piston, the stroke of the cylinder being arrested in one direction by the engagement of the piston with a rubber bumper 24| and in the opposite direction by the engagement of a stop screw 242 on the cylinder with a stationary member 243. The solenoid valve 240 is actuated under control of a switch 245 which in turn is actuated by a cam 24E on a cam shaft 241 rotated in timed relation to the indexing of the carrier 20. Other cams on the cam shaft 241 actuate switches similar to the switch 246 to control solenoid valves connected to the pipe lines from the other fluid actuators for actuating the components of the above-described device in a predetermined sequence.
For each cycle of operation the lowermost card I5 of the stack in the magazine I6 is released onto the transfer plate |20 which positions the ends 20 of the terminals of the card in engagement with the pad 220 at which time the movable jaw closes to grip the ends 25 between the oil pads 220 and 22| and hold the card on the second transfer device |53 as the first transfer plate continues its movement, after which the second transfer device |53 is moved to its lower position to place the card onto the pins I3 of the holder i8 on the feed table 20 and is then moved horizontally to the left to disengagethe transfer device |53 from the card and wipe a filml of 1oilon .the ends :29 of the terminals and permit the feed table20 to be indexed to position -another holder l0 in alignment with `the feeding device. The device |53 is then raised and advanced to its normal position as shown in Fig. 5 and the first transfer plate |20 vand the card ejecting lthe mechanism are returned to their normal `positions preparatory to the feeding of another card.
1t is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are simply illustrative of the application of the principles of this invention. Numerous other arrangements may be readily devised by those skilled in the art which will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, means for supporting a card having terminals with the end portions of the terminals projecting beyond the card, a pair of jaws having oil impregnated pads thereon engageable 'with the ends of said terminals, and means for actuating said jaws to grip the ends of the terminals and to move the jaws away from said terminals to cause a lm of oil to be wiped onto the ends of the terminals.
2. In a device for feeding cards and oiling the projecting ends of terminals mounted thereon, the combination of means for supporting one of said cards against movement relative to said means in .one direction, a pair of oil dispensing elements engagea-ble with the ends of said terminals for depositing oil thereon, means for moving said supportingmeans to a predetermined position to support said card in a position to be engaged by said elements, means for moving the elements towards each other to yieldably clamp the ends of the termina-ls therebetween, and means for effecting relative movement between said elements and said card supporting means while said elements are engaging said terminals to cause oil to be deposited on said terminals.
3. .ln an apparatus of the class described, the combination of an article holder, a transfer element movable from a first position remote from said holder to a second position adjacent said holder for receiving an article at said first position and carrying it into engagement with said holder at said second position, means for feeding articles to said first position, a gripper element on said transfer element to grip a portion of the article therebetween, a member adapted to be impregnated with oil on one of said elements `engageable' with said article, means for actuating said gripper element, means for actuating said transfer element, and means for moving said transfer element in a direction to cause the article to be withdrawn from between said ele ments and to cause a film of oil to be deposited on a portion of said article.
4. A device for feeding cards onto holders on a feed table and for oiling the ends of terminals on the cards comprising a magazine for holding a supply of said cards with terminals thereon, a pair of jaws having oil impregnated pads thereon arranged to grip the ends of the terminals on said cards, means for feeding successive cards from said magazine into said jaws, and means for moving said jaws through a predetermined path to deposit said card onto a holder on said feed table and to withdraw the jaws. from said to cause a nlm oi' oil to be deposited on said terminals.
5. A device for feeding cards onto holders on a carrier and for oiling the ends of terminals on the cards as they are being fed comprising a magazine for holding a supply of said cards, a pair of jaws'having oil impregnated elements thereon arranged to grip the ends of said terminals on said cards, means for feeding successive cards from said magazine into said. jaws, means for moving said jaws to closed position to grip the terminals therebetwe-en, means for moving said jaws and the card therebetween to position said card on a holder on said carrier, and means for withdrawing the jaws from said card while said jaws are closed to cause a lm of oil to be deposited on said terminals.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of an article holder, a transfer element movable from a first position remote from said holder to a second position adjacent said holder for receiving an article at said first position and carrying it into engagement with said holder, means for feeding successive articles to said first position, a gripper element on said transfer element to grip a portion of the article therebetween, a member on one of said elements impregnated with oil and engageable with said article, means for actuating said gripper element, means for actuating said transfer element, and means for effecting relative movement between said transfer element and said article holder in a direction to cause the article to be withdrawn from between said elements and to cause a iilm of oil to be deposited on a portion of said article.
7. A device for feeding cards onto successive card holders at a loading station comprising' a magazine for holding a stack of cards, means for supporting said stack of cards in said magazine and for releasing the bottom card therefrom, a first transfer member movable to and from the bottom of said magazine for receiving the card released therefrom and moving said card through a predetermined path, a second transfer member having a jaw portion movable through a predetermined path from a first position in the path of movement of a card on said rst transfer member to a second position adjacent a holder at said loading station, a jaw member mounted for movement on said second transfer member and cooperable with said jaw portion thereof to grip a card therebetween, means for actuating said card releasing means and said first transfer member to release said card onto the first transfer member and move the card through said path into engagement with the jaw portion of said second transfer member, means for actuating said jaw member from a normally open position to a closed position for yieldably gripping said card therebetween, means for actuating said second transfer member from said first position to said second position to move said card into engagement with said holder, and means for moving said second transfer member laterally relative to said holder to cause the withdrawal of the cardv from said jaws.
8. A device for feeding cards onto successive card holders at a loading station comprising a magazine for holding a stack of cards, means for releasing the bottom card from said magazine, a nrst transfer member mounted for pivotal movement to and from the bottom of said magazine for receiving the card released therefrom and moving said card through an arcuate path, a second transfer member mounted for pivotal movement and having a jaw portion movable through an arcuate path from a first position in the path of movementof a card on said first transfer 8 member to ya second position adjacent a holder at said loading station, a jaw member pivotally mounted on said second transfer member and cooperable with said jaw portion thereof to grip a card therebetween, means for actuating said card releasing means to release a card onto the rst transfer member, means for actuating said first transfer member to move the card through said path into engagement with the jaw portion of said second transfer member, means for actuating said jaw member to yieldably grip said card therebetween, means for actuating said second transfer member from said rst position to said second position to carry said card into engagement with said holder, and means to effect a relative lateral movement between said holder and said second transfer member to withdraw the card from between said jaws.
9. A device for feeding cards onto successive card hold-ers at a loading station and oiling the projecting ends of terminals on the cards comprising a magazine for holding a stack of said cards, means for supporting said stack of cards in said magazine and for releasing the bottom card therefrom, a first transfer member movable through a predetermined path to and from the bottom of said magazine and the stack of cards therein for receiving the card released therefrom Aand moving said card through a predetermined path, a second transfer member having a first oil dispensing element thereon movable through a predetermined path into and from a nrst position in the path of movement of a card on said first transfer` member and a second position adjacent a holder at said loading station, a second oil dispensing element on. said second transfer member cooperable with said first element to grip the ends of the terminals on the card therebetween, means for actuating said card releasing means to release a card onto the first transfer member, means for actuating said iirst transfer member to move the lterminals on the card into engagement with said first element on said second transfer member, means for actuating said second element into engagement with said first element for yieldably gripping the ends of the terminals therebetween, means for actuating said second transfer member from said first position to said second position to carry said card into engagement with said holder, and means for moving said second transfer member from said holder in a direction substantially parallel to a face of the card to cause the ends of the terminals to be withdrawn from said elements and oil to be deposited on said terminals.
10. A device for feeding cards onto card holders at a loading station and oiling the projecting ends of terminals on the cards comprising a magazine for holding a stack of cards, means for vreleasing the bottom card from said stack, a first transfer member mounted for pivotal movement to and from the bottom of said magazine and a predetermined transfer position for receiving the card released from said magazine and moving said card to said transfer position, a second transfer member having a first oil dispensing element thereon and mounted for pivotal movement to and from a first position in engagement with a card at said transfer position and a second position adjacent a holder at said loading station, a second oil dispensing element mounted for movement on said second transfer member and cooperable with said first element to grip the ends of the terminals on the card therebetween, means for actuating said card releasing means to release a card onto the first transfer member, means for actuating said first transfer member to move the card to said transfer position With the terminals on the card in engagement with said first element on said second transfer member, means for actuating said second element into engagement with said nrst element for yieldably gripping the ends of the terminals therebetween, and means for actuating said second transfer member from said first position to said second position to carry said card into engagement with said holder and for moving said second transfer member from said holder to withdraw the elements from engagement with the ends of the terminals to effect the deposit of oil on said terminals.
11. A device for feeding cards onto card holders at a loading station and oiling the projecting ends of terminals on the cards comprising a magazine for holding a stack of cards, means for releasing the bottom card from said magazine, a first transfer member mounted for pivotal movement through an arcuate path to and from an upper position adjacent the bottom of said magazine for receiving a card released from the magazine and moving said card to a transfer position intermediate the upper and lower position of said transfer member, a second transfer member mounted for pivotal movement and having a first oil impregnated element thereon movable to and from a first position in the path of movement and a lower position remote from said magazine of a card on said first transfer member and a second position adjacent a holder at said loading station, a second oil impregnated element mounted for movement on said second transfer member and cooperable with said first element to grip the ends of the terminals of a card at said transfer position, a fluid operated actuator for actuating said card releasing means to release a card onto the first transfer member, a fluid operated actuator for actuating said rst transfer member to move the card thereon into said transfer position with the terminals on the card in engagement with said first element on said second transfer member, dashpot means for controlling the speed of said transfer member from said upper position to said transfer position, a iiuid operated actuator for actuating said second element into engagement with said first element for yieldably gripping the ends of the terminals therebetween, a iiuid operated actuator for actuating said second transfer member from said first position to said second position to carry said card into engagement with said holder, a uid operated actuator for moving said second transfer member from said holder in a direction substantially in a plane of the card to withdraw the oil impregnated elements from the terminals and cause a lm of oil to be wiped on said terminals, and means for coordinating the movements of said fluid operated actuators.
12` A device for feeding articles onto holders on a carrier comprising a magazine for holding a stack of articles, means for releasing the bottom article from said magazine, a first transfer member mounted for pivotal movement through an arcuate path to and from an upper position adjacent the bottom of said magazine and a lower position remote from said magazine for receiving an article released. from the magazine and moving said article to a transfer position intermediate the upper and lower position of said transfer member, a second transfer member mounted for pivotal movement and having a gripping element thereon movable to and from a rst position in engagement with an article at said transfer position and a second position adjacent a holder on said carrier, a second gripping element mounted for movement on said second transfer member and cooperable with said first element to grip an article at said transfer position, a iiuid operated actuator for actuating said releasing means to release an article onto the first transfer member, a fluid operated actuator for actuating said first transfer member to move the article thereon into said transfer position, dashpot means for controlling the speed of said transfer member from said upper position to said transfer position, a fluid operated actuator for actuating said second element to yieldably grip the article therebetween, a fluid operated actuator for actuating said second transfer member from said first position to said second position to carry said article into engagement with said holder, a iiuid operated actuator for moving said second transfer member from said holder to withdraw lthe griping elements from the article, and means for coordinating the movements of said fluid. operated actuators.
13. In a device for feeding cards and oiling the projecting ends of terminals mounted thereon, the combination of means for supporting one of said cards and for holding said card against movement in one direction relative to said means, a pair of oil dispensing elements engageable with the ends of said terminals for depositing oil thereon, means for moving said supporting means and the card thereon to a predetermined position with the terminals in engagement with one of said elements, means for moving the other element into engagement with said one element to yieldably clamp the ends of the terminals therebetween, and means for effecting relative movement between the elements and the card supporting means in said one direction while said elements yare engaging said terminals to cause oil to be deposited on the terminals.
