(Cl. 229-73) This invention relates to mailing devices, and more particularly, to so-called two-way mailing devices adapted to provide a semi-sealed envelope for posting in one direction and a cornpletely sealed envelope for posting in the return direction.

While not limited thereto, the present invention is especially suitable for use in banking by mail or the making of payments by mail in connection with installment accounts.

It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, easy and economical to fabricate and put to use, and admirably adapted to perform its intended functions.

These, and other objects of the present invention, will become more apparent as the detailed description hereinafter set forth progresses.

In the accompanying specification there shall be described, and in the annexed drawings shown, an illustrative embodiment of the mailing devices of the present invention. It is, however, to be clearly understood that the present invention is not to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described for purposes of illustration only inasmuch as changes therein may be made without the exercise of invention and within the scope of the claims hereto appended.

In said drawings,

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the mailing devices of the present invention may be formed;

Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same after folding to form a first envelope including a receipt, preparatory to sealing and posting in the initial direction;

Fig. 3 shows the device including a receipt ready for mailing in the initial direction;

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, partially broken away, and showing the device preparatory to sealing the second envelope and posting the same in the return direction; and

Fig. 5 shows the device .ready for mailing in the return direction.

Referring now more in detail to the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention, with particular reference to Fig. 1 of the draw ings, the numeral I0 generally designates a substantially rectangular sheet of paper including a first major or central section II defined by a longitudinal fold line I2, a longitudinal perforated line I3, a side edge perforated line I4 constituting a continuation of the side edge I5, and another side edge perforated line I6 constituting a continuation of the side edge I 'I.

Extending from the boundary of the section II defined by the side edge perforated line I4 is a flap I8, and extending from the boundary of said section dened by the side edge perforated line It is another, shorter ap I9, said flaps being provided, respectively, with gummed marginal portions 2i! and 2l, and gummed

A substantially central portion 24 of the section Il is defined, in part, by longitudinal

perforated lines

25 and 26, said central portion being separable from the section II along the lines 25 and 2li, and the lines Iii and IB and being adapted to bear, for example, a remittance slip, such as a bank deposit slip or an installment payment slip usable as will hereinafter be described.

The section I I is completed by a gummed marginal region 2l adjacent the perforated line I3, that portion of said section II lying between the perforated lines I3 and 26 providing, also as will later be described, a sealing iiap 28 for closing a second envelope during the return trip of the device.

Extending from the section II along the perforated line I3 is a second major or first outer section 2li, this section being dened, in addition to the line I3, by the longitudinal edge 30 and side edges 3I and 32, and being ofthe same size as the section I I.

Adjacent the edge 30, the section 29 is provided with a gummed region 33, and spaced inwardly from the edge 30, said section 29 is provided with a longitudinal perforated line 34 which, together with the perforated line I3 and portions of the side edges 3i and 32 dene a separable sub-section 35 which may constitute a remittance receipt as will hereinafter be described. The sub-section 35 is completed by a cut-away portion 36 which is entirely within the boundaries of said sub-section.

Extending from the section II along the fold line I2 is a subsidiary or second outer section 3l, this section being dened, in addition to the line I2, by the longitudinal edge 38 and side edges 39 and 4i). The

38 and 40 are cutaway, as at 4I, whereby the length of the edge di) is substantially equal to the length of the perforated line I6 or flap I9 of the central section I I, the length of the edge 39 being substantially equal to the length of the perforated line I5 or nap I8 of said central section Il.

The section 31 may be completed by printing thereon a message and/or instructions for use of the device.

This completes the description of the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention, and the mode of use thereof, for example, in connection with banking by mail, may be summarized as follows:

The section 31 is folded over the section II along the line I2 and the naps I8 and I9 are folded over the section 31 along the lines I4 and i6, the naps being held in place by the partial sealing afforded by the

gummed spots

22 and 23. Assume the bank had received a mail deposit from a depositor who had used one of the devices of the present invention for transmitting his deposit to the bank. The bank would then have the section 29 of the device used by the depositor from which the receipt section 35 could be removed, nlled out and put into the device the use of which is being currently described. This device would, at that stage, have the appearance of Fig. 201i the drawings, wherein it will be seen that the depositors (Remittors) name and address is visible through the cut-away portion 4I of the section 31. In this ligure the receipt from the previous device used by the depositor is designated by reference character 35a.

The section 29 is then folded over the section 31 along the line i3 and said section 29 is sealed in place by the gummed portion 33. Because of the spacing between the cut-away 3 of the section 29 and the line I3, said cut-away 36 substantially coincides with the cut-away 4I of the section 31, whereby the depositors name and address is still visible from the exterior of the device. The appearance of the device will be as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. kThe back of the section 29 may be provided with the banks (Remittees) name and address, and, after applying an appropriate stamp, the device is ready for mailing on its initial trip.

When the device is received by the depositor, itis opened by breaking the seal 33. The receipt 35a may be removed, and the device is ready for use in making a new deposit. For this purpose,

the partially sealed naps I8 and I9 are folded back from the section 31 and the latter is folded back from the section II. rThe deposit slip afforded by the sub-section 24 may be filled in and the box labelled 35h may be filled in with the depositors name and address.

The section 29 is separated from the rest of the device along the perforated line I3 and the receipt portion 35 is separated from the remainder of the section 29. The receipt portion 35, together with the subject matter of the deposit (bills or checks), are placed over the central portion Il, and, after folding the section 31 over the deposit, the last-named section is sealed in place by the gummed portions 20 and 2| of the aps I8 and I9. At this stage, the device appears as in Fig. 4 of the drawings. After folding the portion 28 of the section I I over the section 31, and sealing the device by the gummed portion 21, the device appears as in Fig. of the drawings and is ready for mailing. It will be noted that the back of the section 31 may have the banks name and address thereon.

When the device is received by the bank, the seal afforded by the gummed portion 21 is broken and the receipt and deposit removed from between the sections ll and 31. The deposit slip portion 24 is separated from the section Il for bank record purposes and, after lling out the receipt portion 35a. obtained by the depositor from the envelope as originally sent to him, the cycle described commences all over again.

This completes the description of the mode of use of the device of the present invention. It will be noted from all of the foregoing that the present invention provides a simple and inexpensive two-way mailing device, particularly well suited to conducting banking or installment payments by mail.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention will readily occur to those skilled in the art to which the same relates.

What is claimed is:

1. A blank for a two-way mailing device comprising: a substantially rectangular sheet of material scored to divide the same into three major sections; the central section having flaps, provided With gummed portions, extending from the side edges thereof, and a gummed portion adjacent one of the longitudinal edges thereof; one of the outer sections being cut away at the outer longitudinal edge and one of the si-de edges thereof; the other outer section being cut away in a region spaced from its boundaries, and provided with a gummed portion adjacent its outer longitudinal edge; the cut-away portions of both of said outer sections substantially coinciding when said outer sections are folded to overlie said central section.

2. A blank for a two-way mailing device comprising: a substantially rectangular sheet of material scored to divide the same into three major sections and permit the outer sections to be folded to overlie the central section; the central section having flaps, provided With gummed portions, extending from the side edges thereof, and being, itself, scored to provide a portion removable therefrom; the outer sections being provided with cut-away portions adapted substantially to coincide when said outer sections are folded to overlie said central section, and one of said outer sections being, itself, scored to provide a portion removable therefrom.

3. A two-way mailing device comprising: a sheet 'of material scored to divide the same into two major sections and one subsidiary section; one of said major sections having flaps extending from the side edges thereof; said subsidiary section being foldable over said last-named major section, said flaps being foldable over said subsidiary section, and the other major section being foldable over said subsidiary section, to provide a first envelope; said other major section and said subsidiary section being provided with substantially coinciding cut-away portions permitting a view of a portion of the interior of said rst envelope; said last-named major section being separable from the remainder of the device, and a portion of the remaining major section being foldable over said subsidiary section and said flaps to provide a second envelope.
