Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS FRY, OF BROOKLYN, AND CHARLES A. SEELY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO W. CAMPBELL.
MODE OF BACKING UP PICTURES ON GLASS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 26,733, dated January 3, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS FRY, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, and CHARLES A. SEELY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in the Pictures called Ohemitypes, and applicable also to other pictures or designs on glass; and we do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of our invention consists in the application of wax or other translucent substances to the back of the chemitype or other pictures on glass and coloring the same, thereby producing a clearness and softness of effect which have not before been obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to the description of our process.
We take a chemitype produced by any of the known methods, before any coloring or backing has been used, and apply to the impression side a layer of wax or its equivalent, either by flowing melted wax or by attaching sheets of wax. When the wax is spread to a suitable thickness we then reduce the surface or make it even by means'of scraping with a knife or other suitable implement. The wax may be of a uniform thickness of a sixteenth of an inch, more or less, or may be of an uneven thickness, to suit the nature of the picture. We now lay on colors in oil, water, or powder, or by meansof tinted paper.
The same procedure is employed in finishing other designs on glass.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process of using wax, stearine, spermaceti, or other substances or compositions substantially the same for the purpose of backing up and as a medium of color for the chemitype and other pictures or designs on glass.
THOMAS FRY. OH. A. SEELY.
