Photographic slidesmay be: of several types. In either case the slide is bound by tape around the marginal edge.
"This application is a continuation-in-part application of my co-pending patent application, Serial No. 144,926, filed February 18, 1950, now Patent Number 2,643,017, issued June 23, 1953. In my co-pending application referred to, means are described for feeding tape to an apparatus wherein the tape'is applied to the edge of a'photographic slide.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel device for folding the edges of the tape into adhesive securement with the side surfaces of the slide.
"Another object of this invention is to provide a device for folding the edges of the tape into ad, hesive securement with the side surfaces of the slide in such a manner that, at the corners of the slide, the tape is folded in neat folds.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter morefully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, the entire machine, including the meansfor feeding the adhesive tape and the means for folding thev edges of the tape into adhesive securement with the side surfaces of the slide, is generally-indicatedat 16. This device includes a mounting structure or box I2 havinga plurality of supporting members 14. The supporting members specifically shown are suction cups. 1
Rotatably mounted in box I 2 are a pair of. meshing gears l5-and IS. The gear [5 is rotated by hand. Gear I6 is secured to a shaft l8 which is rotatably journalled in box l2. Also mounted on shaft I8 is a serrated feed wheel 20. The tapeis trained under wheel 20 With the adhesive side thereof in contact with wheel 20. The tape is drawn from a roll 24 by wheel 26 and is fed onto, a surface 22 wherein the adhesive tape is secured to the edges'of the photographic slide. The'roll 24 of adhesive tape is rotatably mounted on an axle 26 journalled in box 12.
After the tape is applied to the edges of the photographic slide, the slide S with the tape adhered thereto appears as in Figure 9. It is desired that'this tape be folded over into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, as shown in Figure 10. For that purpose, a pair of rollers is provided in an arrangement indicated in its entirety by the numeral 28. The entire device for folding over the tape into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide is supported by a channel-like structure 30 which is secured to the upper surface of box l2 by means of screws 32. This folding device is separable from box I2 but is secured thereto for purposes of convenience.
Thechannel 30 comprises a bottom wall 34 and two oppositely facing upright walls or mounting flanges 36 and 38. A pair of rollers 40 and 42,, having respective shafts 44 and 46, are positioned parallel to each other between the oppositely facing walls 36 and 38 of the channel structure 30. As shown in Figure 3, the shafts 44 and 46 are journalled in elongated openings or slots 48 and 50 in walls 36 and 38. The shafts 44 and 46 extend outwardly beyond walls 36 and 38. Springs 52 are connected between the adjacent extended ends of shafts 44 and 46, biasing the shafts toward each other. The rollers 40 and 42 are spaced atleast at one end thereof from the upright walls 36' or 38 as shown in Figure 11. This spacing of the ends of the rollers from the adjacent wall is maintained by provision of shoulders spectively in shafts 44 and 46.
When the slide S is inserted between rollers 40 and 42 with one edge against side wall 38, as shown in Figure 11, a portion of the tape indicated at 54 is positioned between the ends of rollers 40 and 42 and the wall 38. The portion of the tape between the rollers 45 and 42 is pressed into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, but the portion of the tape indicated at 54 remains extending generally perpendicular to the plane of the slide.
After this first side of the slide has the tape aflixed thereto, the slide is removed and turned a quarter turn so that the edge of the slide that was against the wall 38 is in the lowermost position. This latter edge of the slide is then inserted downwardly between the rollers, and the adjacent edge upon which the tape has not been folded down is kept against wall 38. the portion of the tape previously indicated at 54 between the rollers 40 and 42 and forms a neat fold at the corners of the slide with overlapping portions of the fold in adhesive engagement with each other. That portion 54 of the tape referred to above is folded under the portion that is folded upwardly from the second edge.- The spacing of the ends of the rollers 40 and 42 from the corresponding wall 38 is substantially equal to the width of the tape that is folded over against one side of the slide.
This procedure is continued around the periphery of the slide forming neatly folded corners of the tape as illustrated in Figure 10. Obviously in connection with the final edge, thereof is disposed between the rollers because the entire tape can be folded up at that time.
The slotted openings l8 and 5B permit the rollers to be spread apart in response to insertion of the slide therebetween. The tension of the springs 52 causes the rollers to firmly engage the side surfaces of the slide for pressing the tape against the slide.
With respect to the spacing, referred to above, of the ends of the rollers 4t and 42 from the adjacent wall 38, the preferred spacing is ap proximately the width of the portion of the tape that is folded over against one of the sides of the slide. This preferred spacing would result in having equal overlapping portions at the fold.
In the modified form shown in Figure 5, a pair of rollers 56 are shown having shafts 58. These shafts 58 are fixed laterally with respect to each other. The rollers 56 are made of resilient ma-- terial. This permits deformation of the rollers upon the insertion of a slide Bil therebetween. The resiliency of the material in rollers causes the tape to be pressed firmly against the side of the slide in adhering relationship.

The modification shown in Figure '7 is somewhat similar to the modification shown in Figure in that the shaft for one of the rollers is journalled in a slotted hole which extends diagonally upwards from the horizontal. In the modification shown in Figure '7, the shaft for the other roller is journalled in a horizontally elongated slot which provides for initial variable spacing between the pair of rollers. This is primarily to accommodate greater variations in the thicknesses of photographic slides.
As shown in Figure 7, the roller 14 has a shaft 16 positioned in a horizontally elongated slot 18 in the upright walls of channel 80. The roller 82 has a shaft 34 positioned in an elongated slot ttextending diagonally upward from the horizontal. A pair of ears 38 are welded, or in any other similar manner secured, to the outer Bolts through ears 83 and are adapted it so as to limit the movement left, as shown in Figure 7, upon the insertion of the slide 9?. between rollers '54 and 82. By adjusting the position of bolts 96, the degree of spreading between rollers 14 and 32, to accommodate different thicknesses of photographic slides, may be varied.
While there has been shown and described a particular embodiment of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that vari ous changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the invention and, therefore, it is intended in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device for applying adhesive tape to the sides and edges of a photographic slide, which tape is initially adhered to the edges of the slide and disposed generally in planes perpendicular to the plane of the slide, whereupon it is desired to fold the edges of the tape into adhering engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, the combination comprising a frame having a pair of spaced mounting flanges, a pair of elongated, cylindrical rollers disposed in parallel relation to each other between said mounting flanges, a roller shaft for each roller, said rollers being of greater length than the length of the longest edge of a slide, whereby the entire length of any edge of the slide may be thrust between the rollers and the edges of the tape along said edge .of the slide may be rolled into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, said rollers being rotatable inde- 50 are threaded to engage shaft pendently of each other, said mounting flanges having journal apertures therein within which are journalled the roller shafts, the journal apertures for at least one of said roller shafts being elongated to provide for lateral movement of one roller with respect to the other roller upon insertion of the slide therebetween, and said elongated apertures being so disposed that for every position of said one roller shaft along the length of said elongated journal apertures there is a different lateral spacing of the one roller from the other roller.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 including means biasing the one roller journalled in said elongated journal apertures toward the other roller.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 including spring means biasing the rollers toward each other.
4. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said elongated journal apertures extend diagonally upwardly from the horizontal, and gravity serving to bias the roller which is journalled in said elongated journal apertures toward the other roller.
5. A device as described in claim 1 wherein the journal apertures for both of said roller shafts are elongated, and the elongated journal apertures for at least one of the roller shafts extends diagonally upwardly from the horizontal.
6. A device as described in claim 1 wherein the journal apertures for both of the roller shafts are elongated, the elongated journal apertures for one roller shaft extending diagonally upwardly from the horizontal, the elongated journal apertures for the second roller shaft extending horizontally, and stop means on the frame for engaging the second roller shaft to limit the lateral movement of said second roller shaft at selective positions intermediate the lateral ends of its elongated journal apertures, whereby the initial spacing between the rollers may be varied.

In a device for applying adhesive tape to the sides and edges of a photographic slide, which tape is initially adhered to the edges of the slide and disposed generally in planes perpendicular to the plane of the slide, whereupon it is desired to fold the edges of the tape into adhering engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, the combination comprising a frame having a pair of spaced mounting flanges, a pair of elongated, cylindrical, rollers disposed in parallel relation to each other between said mounting flanges, a roller shaft for each roller, said rollers being of greater length than the length of the longest edge'of a slide, whereby the entire length of any edge of the slide may be thrust between the rollers and the edges of the tape along said edge of the slide may be rolled into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, said rollers being rotatable independently of each other, said mounting flanges having journal apertures therein within which are journalled the roller shafts, the journal apertures for at least one of said roller shafts being elongated to provide for lateral movement of one roller with respect to the other roller upon insertion of the slide therebetween, said elongated journal apertures being so disposed that for every position of the roller shaft along the length of said elongated apertures there is a different lateral spacing of that roller from the other roller, and a pair of springs connecting the corresponding ends of said pair of roller shafts, whereby said rollers are biased toward each other.

In a device for applying adhesive tape to the sides and edges of a photographic slide, which tape is initially adhered to the edges of the slide and disposed generally in planes perpendicular to the plane of the slide, whereupon it is desired to fold the edges of the tape into adhering engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, the combination comprising a frame having a pair of spaced mounting flanges, a pair of elongated, cylindrical, rollers disposed in parallel relation to each other between said mounting flanges, a roller shaft for each roller, said rollers being of greater length than the length of the longest edge of a slide, whereby the entire length of any edge of the slide may be thrust between the rollers and the edges of the tape along said edge of the slide may be rolled intoengagement with the side surfaces of the slide, said rollers being rotatable independently of each other, said mounting flanges having journal apertures therein within which are journalled the roller shafts, the journal apertures for at least one of said roller shafts being elongated horizontally to provide for lateral movement of the one roller with respect to the other roller, and adjustable stop means on said frame for engaging the roller shaft to limit the lateral movement of said roller shaft to selected positions intermediate the lateral ends of the elongated journal apertures, whereby the spacing between said rollers may be varied.

In a device for applying adhesive tape to the sides and edges of a photographic slide, which tape is initially adhered to the edges of the slide and disposed generally in planes perpendicular to the plane of the slide, whereupon it is desired to fold the edges of the tape into adhering engagement with theside surfaces of the slide, the combination comprising a frame having a pair of spaced mounting flanges, a pair of elongated, cylindrical, rollers disposed in parallel relation to each other between said mounting flanges, a roller shaft for each roller, said rollers being of greater length than the length of the longest edge of a slide, whereby the entire length of any edge of the slide may be thrust between the rollers and the edges of the tape along said edge of the slide may be rolled into engagement with the side surfaces of the slide, said mounting flanges having means thereon which journal the roller shafts, means spacing the axial ends of said rollers from at least one of said mounting flanges, spacing be tween said ends of the rollers and said mounting flange being substantially equal to the width of the tape that is folded over against one. side of the slide, and said flange serving as' a guide for an edge of the slide during the tape-folding operation.
