UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.

This invention relates to a clothes bag holder and has for its primary object to suspend a clothes bag in a rolled condition when it is not in use and thereby to save storage space.

Another object is to suspend the clothes bag in such a manner that it may be instantaneously moved to an unrolled position and opened for the introduction of an article of clothing thereinto.

A still further object is to protect the upper end of the clothes bag and a garment suspended therein from the collection of dust and dirt and to deflect any dust that may settle downwardly from the upper end of the clothes bag and a garment suspended therein.

The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features an elongated substantially transversely inverted U-shaped hood, a spring actuated roller carried by the hood within the confines thereof, a clothes bag of flexible material connected to the roller and adapted to be rolled thereon by the effort of the spring, means carried by the hood to support the holder in suspended position with relation to a support and means carried by the roller and accessible from the exterior of the hood for holding said roller against movement under the influence of the spring when the clothes bag is extended.

Gther features include a rod carried by the roller, means carried by the front wall of the clothes bag adjacent the upper end thereof to slidably suspend said front wall on the rod and said front wall having a slit opening through the upper edge thereof and extending downwardly substantially midway between opposite sides of the clothes bag to provide an access opening by .'hich articles of clothing may be introduced into or removed from the clothes bag, and a slide fastener carried by the front wall of the clothes bag for closing said slit.

Referring to the drawings in detail a hood I formed of a suitable rigid material is of substantially inverted Ushaped cross section and has opposite ends closed by end walls I2. A suitable hanger member I4 is attached at opposite endsl to the hood I 6 adjacent opposite ends thereof and extends upwardly therefrom and is provided with a hook I6 which may be engaged with any suitable support for suspending the hood and clothes bag in an elevated position.

Mounted for rotation within the hood I6 is a roller I8 of the type conventionally used for supporting window shades, and this roller is equipped adjacent one end with a longitudinal recess 20 containing conventional coiled spring 22, one end of which is anchored to the interior of the roller while the opposite end is connected to a suitable pintle 24 which is anchored in one of the end walls I2 and held against rotation relative to the hood I6. The opposite end of the roller is provided with an axially extending stub shaft 26 which projects through the end wall I2 opposite that receiving the pintle 24 and carries adjacent its outer end a notched drum 28. A spring pressed pawl 30 is pivotally connected to the wall I2 adjacent the drum 28 and is adapted to engage in a notch in said drum in order to hold the roller I8 against rotation by the eifort ofthe spring 22.

Carried by the roller and extending longitudinally adjacent the side thereof is a bar 32, and xed to the roller diametrically opposite the bar is the back wall 34 of a garment bag designated generally 36. A front wall 38 of the garment bag 36 is connected to the side and bottom edges of the back wall by conventional gussets 40, and the front wall is provided with a vertically extending slit 42 which extends through the upper edge thereof substantially midway between opposite side edges of said front Wall. Suitable slide members 44 are mounted on the rod 32 and attached to the upper edge of the front wall 38 of the garment bag 36 which is preferably notched as at 46 to enable the opposite panels of the front wall defined by the side edges thereof and the slit 42 to slide longitudinally on the rod to render the interior of the garment bag accessible for the introduction thereinto or removal of garments therefrom. A suitable slide fastener 43 is carried by the front wall of the garment bag and in one position closes the slit 42 while in its opposite eX- treme position opens the slit so that the panels of the front wall 38 dened between the slit d2 and the opposite side edges of said front wall may be moved longitudinally along the bar 32 to open or close the access opening.

Carried by the roller I8 substantially midway :between opposite ends thereof and extending into the upper open end of the garment bag 36 is a relatively shallow loop 50 which when the garment bag is extended may support a conventional garment hanger 52 within said garment bag and upon which a garment may be supported.

What is claimed is:
