Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,72 O,.da.ted .J'anua To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, JONATHAN T. TRo'r- 'I'ER, of the city, county, and State: of New York, haveinvented a new and improved method of finishing and fixing to the surfaces of cotton, silk, wool, or other cloth fabrics a coating of powdered flocks, ground cork, or other similar material by means of a series of carrying and sizing rollers; and I i do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the same. v
The nature of my invention relates to an improved method of manufacturing felt water proof goods. These goods are commonly made by sifting over the surfaces of cotton, silk or other water proof fabrics, powdered flocks, or ground cork, or other fibrous material, and then by the application of a solution of india rubber fix the flock or other substance to the surface of the cloth, by passing it over the edge of a scraper and between pressure rollers. The object of this is to remove any excess of the solution of rubber, or excrescences, or inequalities in the application of the gum. But
in doing this there is constant liability to abrade or rub, or skin the rubber fabric of its coating of powdered flock or other material, and thus damage the fabric, and often to so great an extent as to require being done over again.
The object of my im rovement, therefore is to obviate this di culty in the manufacture of felt rubber goods.
To describe my invention more particularly I will refer to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification the same letters of reference wherever they occur referring to like parts.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same.
Letter A, is the frame of the machine, across the top of it is arranged a box or trough B, for containing or holding a solvent or a solution of india rubber or other vulcanizable gum and in which aroller C,
to answer the purposeoficlothj driving andff receiving rollers bywthejapplication of any suitable mechanism f for that purpose."
The method of operating and appl ng r my invention is asQfOIlows IYtake afxpiece of cloth, and by any lwell} known mean spread upon its surface a liqui d or plasti coating of vulcanizable. .On this sift, (while in the raw stateya lcoating of pow dered flock, groundjcork or iother prepared fibrous material, I, and g by means :of suitable pressure rollers, compressthesame intdthe 1 surface of the gum; I nexti formfthe cloth 11 into a roll by windingon a suitable cylinder, and carry the end of it underthetightening roller F, and overythe, uppen surface of the sizing roller C, underthegpressure rollerjE and thence out under thefback tightening roller G, to any suitable drawing or wind-I ing frame upon which thefcloth is tofbe received. When thus; arranged the machine is set in motion. by any suitable arrange-W ment ofgearing or belting, whichby the? friction of the clothxuponlthe surface of the} sizing roller, andtightening rollers causes them to rotate, In :doing thisfthe submerged part of the sizing ;roller*lcarry up as are tates and delivers upon the fiockedsurface, of the fabric, a thin film or coating of the solution of a vulcanizable gum, .orsolvent thereof, as may besused, according tof the; nature and quality of the goods to be made. Thus, where fabricshaving a jhGLVYflOCkBdt .1 1 surface are to be finished, a solution of the gum willbe used; butwhere light fabrics, I such as silk, worsted,,or cambrics, having a thin coating of flock are. to be finished a solvent of any of the vulcanizable gums may a be used, as it willsufiicientlyysoftenorwdiss a solve the previously gumined 1 surfaces f of such goods to saturate the flock, to make it adhere, in consequence of l the yielding, or. elastic pressure of. the roller} E, upon the upper surface of the fabric; qBy thismeans. u the solution or solvenflasxthe case maybd is made to saturate and penetratethe felt or flock coating as it lipassesoverthesizing roller to cause it ltojcombine ;and adhere permanently and evenly with the gumll reviously laid on the fabric, tojgiveit a c oth like textile appearance" 1 r rd r t f Having now described my inventio nd its application and mode of useI wingqpro-q ceed to set forth what Iclaim andrdesire toji l, ssecure by Letters Patent of the United tates. 1 1x1:
What I claim is liver, the solution or solvent upon the flocked 10 The method of finishing or fixing the felt surface of the fabric, in an even and unilike coating of powdered flock, ground cork, form sheet, to fix the flock into the surface or other similar fibrous material, upon the of the fabric smoothly and uniformly to 5 surface of a previously Water proofed fabgive it a cloth like textile appearance.
