I CHEST WITH COACTING DRAWER AND LID Filed April 24, 194'? Patented Mar. 9, 1,954
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHEST WITH COACTIN G DRAWER AND LID Samuel M. Radzyner, Chicago, Ill.
Application April 24, 1947, Serial No. 743,602
(Cl. S12-274) 5 Claims. 1
The invention relates to chests or kits for the storing of articles.
It is an object of the invention to provide a chest having a sliding drawer which normally is in closed position in the chest and adapted to be opened upon opening of the cover.
Another object constitutes the provision of a chest wherein a sliding drawer is adapted to close the cover when moved into closing position.
A still further object constitutes the provision of a chest wherein a cover is pivotally secured to the chest and may be opened into a position 'to form an obtuse angle with a horizontal plane to present to view articles removably secured and provided with means for ej ecting a sliding drawer in the chest. v
It is also an object to lock the drawer in the chest to prevent undesired opening thereof.
It is a still further object to provide certain features of construction and arrangement of parts tending to enhance the utility and eiciency of a, device of the character specified.
With these and other objects in view which will become more apparent from a disclosure of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the claims forming a part thereof, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a chest constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section near one corner of the chest.
Fig. 4A is a magnified sectional fragment of the latching or locking protuberance and indentation.
Referring to the several views of the drawing the chest generally designated by I comprises a bottom I I, side walls I2. a rear wall I3 and a front wall I4.
To the side walls I2 is pivotally secured by pintles I5 a cover generally designated by I6 which comprises a plate I'I formed with a downwardly extending ange I 8 at the front and side anges I9 which increase in width toward the rear.
The pivots I5 are so arranged that the cover in open position forms an obtuse angle with a horizontal plane to afford a display of articles secured to the inner side of the cover.
The cover is formed with front and rear partition boards and 2| connected by a central par- 2 tition board 22. At each side a short partition board 23 is provided. A spring clip 24 is secured to the cover for each compartment formed by the central partition 22 and the respective side board 23 so that an article 25 such as a pack of cards is securely held in the cover compartments.
The cover is provided at the rear edge with a lug 26 which is adapted to project through'a slot 2'I in the rear wall I3. The latter has also a notch 28 at the top to afford clearance for the central partition 22 in the closed position of the cover.
The front wall has a rectangular opening 29 to receive a sliding drawer 20. The rear wall of the drawer 3 I is formed with a central upstanding crest 32 in alignment with the lug 26.
The bottom 33 of the drawer has at each side near the rear corner an' indentation 34 into which extends a latching or locking protuberance 35 on the bottom I I of the chest when the drawer is in closed position.
A yieldable guide strip 36, which may be of spring metal, for example, at each side wall I2 engages the rear wall 3I of the drawer to force the latter into position to engage the bottom II and to retain the protuberance 35 in the indentation 34.
The drawer may contain score pads or memo sheets or any other material desired to be stored.
In use when the cover is opened the lug 26 will eject the drawer by engagement with the crest 32 and conversely when the drawer is closed the crest will cause an impact on the lug 26 and thereby close the cover.
While the drawing shows one embodiment of the invention, numerous changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, wish to include all modiiications. revisions, and re-arrangements constituting departures within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a chest having a cover pivotally secured thereto, a sliding drawer and an opening in a wall of the chest communicating with an inward portion of said drawer, a lug on said cover and positioned to enter and project beyond said opening in the chest wall from the outside to the inside thereof to rnpnge upon the drawer and produce opening movement of the latter responsive to predetermined opening movement of said cover.
2. In a device of the class described, a chest having an open top; a cover for said top pivoted on the chest;v a drawer slidable in the chest below said top cover and in a direction normal to the pivotal axis of the cover; a protuberance carried on the underside of said cover and at one side of said axis remotely opposite from said inner side of said drawer; said chest having a wall opening aligned with said inner side of the drawer to confront and admit said protuberance as a result of arcuate movement of the latter with the cover in pivoting of the latter about said axis into a predetermined open position, said cover being movable beyond said last-mentioned position to lodge the protuberance against the drawer and push the drawer outwardly of the chest.
3. In a chest having an access opening, a pivoted cover for said opening; a drawer slidable in the chest beneath and approximately in parallelism with the plane of said opening and in a direction transverse of the pivotal axis of the cover; said chest having a rear wall portion with a passage approximately opposite an innermost side of said drawer; said cover having a rearward portion adapted to move from said plane downwardly to approach said passage as the cover moves into open position; a lug-like member carried on said rearward portion of the cover in position to enter said passage and bear against said innermost side of the drawer to push the latter outwardly a predetermined amount responsive to movement of the cover a predetermined amount into open condition.
4. In a chest structure, a chest casing open at the top and having an adjoining side wall with a passage therethrough, a cover pivotally secured .tothe casing and occupying a rearwardly slanting position with a rearward portion confronting said adjoining wall and passage when open; a drawer slidable in said casing at a level below said top, and having an inner part aligned with said passage; a lug on said rearward portion of the cover and adapted to enter said wall passage in the casing and contact said aligned drawer part to displace the drawer in an opening direction a predetermined distance responsive to opening movement of said cover into said slanting position.
5. In a chest comprising a casing open at the top, a cover pivotally secured thereto and occupying a rearwardly slanting position when open; a sliding drawer in said casing movable in a plane parallel to that of the closed cover; a lug passage in a wall portion of said chest about at the level of said drawer; a lug on said cover directed to project through said passage in the casing when the cover is opened into said slanting position, said lug being disposed in the path of a rearward part of said drawer for engagement by the latter in moving into closed position to pivot the cover a predetermined distance in the direction of closing movement; and conversely, said cover in opening into slanted position moving said drawer toward open condition through a reverse action of the lug on the drawer.
