Description

March 1954 o. M. BRANCEL 2,671,232
OAR HANGER Filed Aug. 20, 1951 ,4 ,0 Fig.

Patented Mar. 9, 1954 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful im provements and structural refinements in car hangers for row boats, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a hanger of the character herein described, which, in its extended position, may be conveniently employed for supporting an car when the latter is not in use, but which may be quickly and easily rotated to lie flatly against the side of the boat, so that it is not protrusive when the use hereof is not desired.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient operation, and in it adaptability for installation on row boats of different; sizes and types.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view .of a row boat with oars, showing the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of one of the hangers installed on the side of a boat, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the subi ect shown in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the general reference character Ill designates a row boat having a pair of oars i2, while the invention involves the provision oi'a pair of hangers M which may be used for supporting the cars when the latter are not in use.
Since the two hangers are identical in construction, a description of one will sufilce for both.
Each of the hangers l4 comprises a bracket l6 which is secured by suitable screws l8 to the side of the boat I2 and is formed integrally with a vertical, tubular socket 29. This socket has an enlarged upper end portion constituting a polygonal seat 22 which is preferably square in cross section, as shown.
A hook shaped hanger member 24 includes a shank 26 which is freely rotatable in the socket 20 and, in addition, is vertically slidable therein. The upper end portion of the shank 26 is enlarged to provide a polygonal head 28 which is receivable in and engageable with the seat 22 so as to lock the shank 26 against rotation.
If desired, an I-shaped handle 30 may be affixed to the head 28, as is clearly shown in Figure 3.
When the invention is in use and the hanger member 24 is disposed in a plane. perpendicular to the side of the boat, an car may be readily positioned and supported therein. However,
when the use of the hanger is not desired, the shank 26 is simply pulled upwardly in the socket 20 by means of the handle 30 so as to disengage the head 28 from the seat 22, whereupon the shank is rotated to approximately and is permitted to drop downwardly while the hook shaped lower portion of the hanger member is disposed flatly against the side of the boat, as indicated at 32.
If desired, a conventional clasp 34 may be afiixed to the hanger member 24 whereby the bail of a minnow bucket, or the like, may be attached to the hanger while fishing.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination of a boat having a gunwale and a collapsible oar hanger secured to the outer surface of said gunwale, said oar hanger including a vertical plate secured to said gunwale, an elongated vertical socket provided on said plate and including a cylindrical lower portion and an enlarged upper portion having a polygonal crosssection, a hook-shaped hanger member including a straight shank slidably and rotatably received in the lower portion of said socket, an oar engaging hook bill at the lower end of said shank and disposed below the socket, and a head of polygonal cross-section provided at the'upper end of said shank, said head being slidably and non-rotatably received in the upper portion of said socket whereby said hook-shaped hanger may be lifted and pivoted about a vertical axis from an operative position substantially perpendicular to the outer surface of said gunwale to an inoperative position substantially parallel to and flush with the outer surface of said gunwale.
ORVILLE M. BRANCEL.
