Claims priority, application Sweden November 10, 1950 This invention relates to a straightening mechanism for round bars, said mechanism being of the kind comprising one or more pairs of rollers arranged to co-operate with a supporting bar, the rollers of each pair being rotatable in the same direction and being so inclined in relation to one another that the piece of work to be straightened, resting on the supporting bar, is moved forwardly during the rotation between the rollers at a speed which is'dependent upon the inclination and the circumferential velocity of the rollers.
It is the main object of the invention to provide a straightening mechanism of the kind stated, in which the desired straightening of the piece of work can normally be effected by passing it through the mechanism once only.
According to the invention, a straightening mechanism of the kind aforesaid is characterised in that the rollers of each pair are furnished with a profile of such a nature that the piece of work when passed between the rollers undergoes two or more alternately opposed angular deflections.
In this connection the angular deflections are preferably such that the piece of work is ejected by the rollers in a position which is displaced towards the side as compared with the position of introduction.
According to a form of embodiment of the invention, one or both rollers of each pair may be shiftable so that the rollers of each pair can be displaced axially in relation to one another, whereby the angle of deflection of the rollers can be readily changed.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end view of the straightening mechanism, partially in section, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view, also partially in section.
The straightening mechanism comprises a base I carrying two horizontal carriages 2 and 3, which can be moved towards and away from each other by means of threaded spindles 4 and 5. On each of the carriages 2 and 3 there is provided a straightening roller 6 or I. The shafts 8 and 9 of these rollers are parallel to one another in the horizontal plane, and they are driven in the r 1 Claim.- (01. 153-408) 2 Y vary very quickly and in a simple manner the rate of advance of the piece of work and also the circumferential velocity of one roller in rela-' tion to the other roller, so as to ensure that the piece of work rests on a supporting bar l5 provided between the rollers 6 and I. Each roller together with the appertaining driving motor is mounted on the carriage 2 or 3, to be rotary about an axis l2 or l3 which is perpendicular to the roller axis, whereby the rollers can be so inclined in relation to one another that upon the rotation they advance the pieceof workat a speed which corresponds to the inclination and the circumferential velocity of the rollers.
The supporting bar I5 is arranged to be liftable and lowerable on a holder III in such a way that it can be raised to the desired position dependent on the diameter of the piece of work to be straightened and can be secured in this position by means of bolts I6. This adjustment in height of the supporting bar can be effected, for example, by the aid of an eccentric H which, following the adjustment of the supporting bar, can be locked in position by means of a threaded bolt l8.
The cooperating straightening rollers, rotatable in the same direction, are furnished with a profile of such a nature that the piece of work being advanced between the same undergoes two oppositely directed angular deflections and is ejected in a position which, as compared with the position of introduction, is displaced towards the side.
In order to be able to adapt the angle of deflection of the rollers within certain limits to the material to be straightened one or both rollers are made to be shiftable in the axial direction so that they can be relatively adjusted. In this way it is possible, without exchanging the rollers, to deal with pieces of work consisting of comparatively different materials. This adjustment may be effected, for example, by displacement of the rollers on their shafts, or by mounting the roller supporting portion I9 or 29 of the carriage 2 or 3 on a transversely shiftable member (not shown).
The base I is furnished with elements 2i and 22 for the attachment of guide straps or also feed tables adjacent the points of feeding and of ejection from the rollers.
The invention is naturally not limited to the embodiment illustrated and described, which is suitable for both long or short pieces of work, and this embodiment can be modified in various ways within the scope of the appended claims.
3 Thus, for example, the rollers may have a greater or smaller width as compared with the embodiment illustrated, and they may be so constructed that more than two deflecting points with different angles of deflection are provided, which is of particular importance when the straightening of short pins or the like is concerned. Instead of making the rollers of greater width the arrangement may also be such that following one of thestraightening rollers there is provided a special roller which is adjustable towards the supporting bar and returns the piece of work into the line of operation. In this way an additional point of deflection is obtained in simple manner. An additional deflection point can, however, also be obtained by means of an adjustable side support or in other suitable fashion.
Instead of making the straightening rollers relatively shiftable for the purpose of varying the angle of deflection such variation can also be accomplished by dividing the rollers at the points of deflection into two parts, which are connected by a screw thread and can be screwed apart in desired spaced relation to one another, in which connection a fitting is preferably provided be tween the two parts Having now particularly described the nature of my invention and the manner of its operation what I claim is:
A straightening mechanism for round bars which comprises, a pair of rollers, means for mounting said rollers with their peripheries in spaced opposed relation, a work piece supporting bar and means for mounting said supporting car in position to extend into the space between said rollers, driving means for driving said rollers in the same direction, said mounting means for said rollers including means for inclining said rollers in relation to one another whereby a work piece supported on said supporting bar and engaged by said rollers is simultaneously moved forwardly and rotated between said rollers, the speed of said forward movement being dependent upon the inclination and the circumferential velocity of said rollers, each of said rollers consisting of two cylinders of different diameter connected to each other by means of a spacer member, said rollers being arranged with the cylinder of greater diameter of one roller lying opposite the cylinder of smaller diameter of the other roller, whereby the work piece passing through between and acted upon by said rollers is subjected to two successive opposed angular deflections.
