2 Claims. 1
Mypresent invention relates to an improved calendar clock of the type including a clockworkmechanism of the spring wound or electric typehaving the customary face and hands and having in addition, visible through an aperture in the clock case, a rotary drum'showing the days of the week and a tape showing the days of the months, and unique operating mechanism for the drum and tape so that the movement of the drum and tape from one day to the next will take place over a short period of time and the device is adapted to be adjusted to provide for such movement at or near the midnight hour. I The calendar operating mechanism of the cloc of my invention need be set only once a year, either on the first of January, or if preferredit may be set'on the 28th day of February, and in the former case it of course must be reset on the 29th of February in leap years while in the latter case will be set on the 28th and 29th of February as maybe required. 7 --In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made inthe exemplified structure within th scope of the appended claims.
vIn the drawings:- Figure 1 isa front elevational view of the calendar clock of my invention. Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional plan vie thereof the upper idler shaft of the tape holding casing being broken away to show a clutch assembly on the tape driving shaft below. i Figure 3 is avertical sectional view through Referring now to the drawings with particular reference to Figures 1 through 9 I have illus:' trated the preferred embodiment of my inven..- tion as comprising a case 2 of suitable shape and material having a front glass 3 and face 4 with minute hand 6 and hour hand 8, the hour hand 2 motivated by tubular shaft in and the minute hand by the enclosed shaft H. The shafts are journaled and powered by the clock work mechanism 12 at the rear of the case.
On the tubular shaft Hi, the hour hand shaft, I provide a worm gear i 4 driving a gear IE on an operating shaft I8 journaled in brackets and supplying the power for the calendar mecha-- nism.
Within the case 2 I provide a pair of casings 22 and 24 which enclose an upper idler reel and a lower winding reel, for the tape 28. The tape maybe of any suitable material such as metal or the like, and the tape is marked with the days of the year by month and day, as for instance January 29. The tape has at its sides series of openings [5 and indicia on the tape are visible through the glassed aperture 29 in the case 2.
The casings 22 and 24 are carried by shafts 30 and 32 of which shaft 30 is an idler and is journaled in brackets 34, and the shaft 32 is journ-aled in bracket 26. The shaft 32 is separable and the drive between the separable portions is effected through the clutch 35 comprising toothed disks 36 and a spring 38.
On the end of shaft 32 I employ a bevel gear 40 meshing with another bevel gear 42 on shaft 44 which has a gear 46 driven by worm gear 41 on the shaft l8.
A month and day indicating drum 48 has series of pins 50 engageable with the spaced apertures IS on the tape, and this drum also has a gear ring 52, the drum being carried by a calendar drum shaft 54 journaled in bracket 55, and a weekday drum 56 is keyed to the drum 48 by keys 58., The weekday drum has indicia showing the days of the week also visible through the aperture 29 of case 2.
The shaft 54 is also provided with a drum 50 and a spring 62 confined by collar 63. On the end of shaft [8 I afiix a gear segment 54, engageable, intermittently with the gear ring 52. The shaft l8 rotates continuously while the gear segment rotating with the shaft engages the gear ring during a portion of its circular movement about the shaft I8.
The hour hand shaft being the slowest movement of the clock driven mechanism, is used to power the calendar device. Shaft I8 is ratioed to the hour hand shaft so that the shaft l8 makes one complete revolution every 24 hours, or every two revolutions of the hour hand shaft. The gear segment 64 is formed so that its gear contact are comprises one-seventh of a circle or 51 and W: degrees and having seven teeth it will follow that change in date and day therefore occurring when most people are asleep.
The reel in casing 22 is a dispensing reel and is not driven but may be rewound at the end of the year by a knob 21 and by releasing the reel in casing 24 on shaft 32 by knob 66, the tape is released from the lower casing 24. Should the the lower reel shaft, said lower reel providing a tape winding reel and being journaled in said case and positioned to receive the lower end of the tape, said month and day indicating drum having spaced radially disposed pins thereon and said tape having openings therein positioned to register with the pins of the month and day indicating drum.
2. In a calendar clock, the combination which -compris"es;a clock works mechanism, a minute hand shaft extended from said mechanism, a tubular hour hand shaft also extended from said mechanism and positioned around the minute hand shaft, a case having a front wall with windows and a glass panel therein, a worm gear positioned on said hour hand shaft, an operat- :ing shaft journaled in said case, a gear mounted clock have stopped for any length of time, as by A a power failure, or failure to wind the clock, the day of the week and of the month may be inaccu rate and the calendar drums may be set by means of the knobs referred to above, or by moving the tape on the drum d3.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1.
