This invention relates to new and useful improvements'in book rests and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for supporting a text book while being used where the reader occupies an arm-chair, permitting the reader to use the arm of the chair for writing while the book is supported at the extreme end of said arm.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a book rest that is adaptable for use not only in conjunction with an arm-chair, but also on a desk or table, and as a support for one or more books while being carried from one classroom to another.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a book rest including a novel attaching member that is so constructed and arranged as to effectively grip the arm of a chair.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a book rest that is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, one that may be quickly and readily attached to or removed from a classroom arm-chair in a convenient manner, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, references being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary part view of a deskchair and showing the present invention applied to the arm of the chair;

Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1 and with a book supported by the present invention;

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the invention inverted and the arm of the chair with a center board or brace;

Figure 4 is a side view of the invention resting upon a desk or table;

Figure 5 is a sectional view of the present invention to show the manner in which the ledgeforming strips are secured to the fiat support; and,

Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the attaching member forming part of the present invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I I) represents an elongated and flat, substantially rectangular, support to whose end edges are secured first and second substantially rectangular ledge-forming strips l2 and M.

The ends of the strips l2 and I4 project laterally from the support If! and the strips I2 and I4 are spaced parallel to each other but perpendicular to the support Hi. The side edge of the strip I2 that is secured to the support I0 is flush with one face of the support It and the side edge of the strip I4 that is secured to the support I0 is flush with the other face of the support In.

Apertures I6 and I8 are provided in the ends of the strip l2 and

apertures

20 and 22 are provided in the ends of the strip I4. The apertures 16, I8, 20 and 22 are inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the support I 0, the apertures l6 and 20 are aligned with each other, and the apertures I8 and 22 are also aligned with each other.

Means is provided for removably securing the support I0 and strips I2, I4 to a supporting structure. This means comprises a U-shaped wire member 24 including a pair of

leg portions

26 and 28, and a web portion 30. The outer ends of the

leg portions

26 and 28 are bent inwardly toward each other and parallel to the web portion 30 to form lugs or

arms

32 and 34.

The leg portion 26 is slidably received in the apertures l6 and 20 whereas the leg portion 28 is slidably received in the apertures I8 and 22. The

arms

32 and 34 overlie the ledge-forming strip I2 whereas the web portion 30 underlies the ledge-forming strip M. The apertures I6, I8, 20 and 22 are so positioned as to locate the parts of the

leg portions

26 and 28, between the strips I2 and I4, between planes flush with the side faces of the support l0 so that a book B may rest against the support I0 without engaging the member 24. The book will engage the member .24 at the juncture of 24 with

apertures

20 and 22 or I6 and I8 on the face side of strips I2 and M, as the case may be.

The face of the strip l4 closest to the support I0 is formed with a plurality of spaced parallel longitudinal grooves 36 one of which is located at the juncture of said support with the strip I4 to accommodate the leaves of a book B. The face of the strip [2 closest to the support II] is also formed with a plurality of spaced parallel grooves with the support [0 to accommodate the leaves of the book B.

In practical use of the present invention with the arm A of a desk-chair having a brace or center board C, as shown in Figure 3, the secured edge of the strip it rests against the upper surface of the arm A and the

32 and 34 engage under the arm A. The support I5 is retained in a vertically inclined position since the same is overbalanced at its upper end to force the

32 and 34 against the undersurface of the arm A.

When the book rest is used with arms A of desk-chairs having no center beam, the secured edge of the strip Hi rests upon the arm A and the web portion 393 bears upwardly against the undersurfaee of the arm A to retain the support It! vertically inclined as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The present book rest may also be supported upon a flat horizontal surface S such as a desk or table top with the inner secured edge pith-e "strip l2 and the outer unsecured edge of the stripv it resting upon the surface S as shown in Figure 4.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawin s, it is believed that clear understanding of the device wiil be quite apparent to those skilled this art. A more detail description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there herein shown described preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes i ully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of theappendedelairris.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. Abook rest comprising an elongatedsupport member, first and second .ledgeforming strips secured to and projecting, laterally from the ends of said support member and from opposite sides of the support member, each of .said strips having an end aperture, and a L!--s-l=iape'd. wire attaching member having leg portions :slidasble in .said 2351381"- tures and a web portion underlying one of the strips, andlateral proiections cm said leg portions overlying the other strip.

2. A book rest comprisingian elongated and fiat support, first and second :ledge forming strips :secured to the ends of said support and paralleling each othensaid first strip extending from one face of the :support :and said second :strip exsaid strips grooves therein.

A book rest comprising an elongated flat panel having upper and lower end edges and forward-and rear faces, upper and lower strips sccured. to the upper and lower edges of the panel, lower-strip projecting rearwardl'y from the face of the panel and said upper-strip projecting forwardly from the forward face of :said panel, said strips Jhaving end apertures, a :U- shaped wire attaching member having .ieg :portions slidably received in said end apertures: and a Web portion underlying the lower strip, zand said leg portions having perpendicular i-f-reea end portions, remote from said web and overlying :said upper strip.
