Description

FRANcIs o. Low'rHoRP, or TRENTON, Naw "pf ,y l
`rrvo'r Barrantes Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,689, dated January To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS C. `Low- THoRP, of Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey,` have invented a new and Improved Pivot-Bearing for Turn-Tables, &c.;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
My invention consists in interposing between a plate attached to a turntable, swing bridge or other like object, and the foundation plate for the same, a pivot constructed and arranged in respect to the two plates substantially as described hereafter, soas to form a center on which the bridge or other object can roll and balance itselfand so as to present in contact with the foundation plate a self lubricating surface. i
In order to enable others to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. y
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Figure l is an exterior View of my'improved pivot bearing; Fig. 2, a vertical section `of the same; Fig. 3, a plan of the step or socket with the pivot removed, and Fig. 4, aninverted plan view of the pivot.'
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. i
A represents the stationary step or socket, B the pivot and C the upper socket or. cap of my improved pivot bearing, which is illustrated in the drawingas arranged for use under a swin bridge or turntable.
In the undersi e of the capC is a concave recess which lits over theupper portion of the pivot B,.this portion of the pivot being somewhat smaller in diameter than the re` cess, and the concavity of the latter` being somewhat less abrupt than the conveXity of the top of the pivot. The object of this arrangement is in order that the bridge `or turn-table to which the cap C issecured may be atliberty to roll slightly and balance and adjust itself on thepivot. i i
The lower portion of the pivot B .its into a recess in the stationary step A the bearing "surface ofthe pivot on the bottom of the recess being level, and the pivot being so formed as to leave an annular chamber a within the recess of the step. This chamber communicates through transverse grooves `the cap and the stepbutkfree; from` contactl table, swing bridge or lotherflike object,an`df y balance itself, and so 1as tof presentinicon#` c c in the bottom `ofgthepivot and similar" grooves h h on thevbottornfofdthe recess,fwith f the central chambers y `and d the l former jbeing in the pivotandfthelatterinthebottom3 of the recess ofthe step. l "Tlf The pivot has a flange lmisituatedbetweenf with both, the fiangefserving the purpose of preventing dust and `dirt"fromgaining `ac-f` y cess to the recessof thestep.` `Additional` @j protection maybe affordedfby `a band z" of p g leather or othersuitable material applied tof the liange `m and to the projectingportion of` the step in the manner illustrated in lred lines Fig. 2. 1 j I 1" Oil is poured into the chamber alsoasto@l nearly fill the latter land the `clnimbers I,b so that as the pivotturnson the .stepthe frictional surface isl always eiciently lubrif, "l cated the refuseandldirt caused bythe wear V i ing of the surfaceormixed with the `oilbeing l conveyed bythe transverse rooves c andi; `1` 1` to the central chamber inilw ichit becomes MI depositedat a safe distancefromthe b`earing surface. `1 y i 3 i 2 l80`1 The bearingI surface of` the cap on` the.` l p pivot being unlubricated the pivot will of 1i" course turnwith thecapyat` the same time` f owing to the above `described smanner of` adapting the cap to the pivot the former,` istV at liberty to roll and adjust itself `onthe latter. i l; l l" @Si A loose disk or disks" offantifrictionmetal` may be advantageously "applied between the t 1p pivot and the step. f y i `1 l ff Iclaim as myinvention and desire to Se-` l 1 cure by Letters Patent- "l k i Interposing between theplate Gfof a turn;
the step or foundation plate";A,` a, pivot Bg" constructed and arranged in `respect` to the plates substantially `as 4hereinloefore i def; scribed so as to form acenter on"whichthe object connected to the plate C mayrollrand tact with the plate A a selfflubricatingsui face. u i y, l p
In testimony whereof, I gihavesignedfmy name to this specification inthepresence of t,
HENRY IIowsolg,` t p
