This invention relates to typewriting machines and related machines, and more particularly to mechanisms for adjusting carriage arresting stops, such as margin stops, to desired positions by remote control through manipulations involving stop-shifting movement of the carriage, without the operator ever laying hands directly on such stops.
Stop setting mechanisms of this general type have been devised advantageously for typewriting machines which have the stops adjustably supported behind the paper supporting devices, and wherein the stops thus are inconvenient for direct access.
Setting or adjusting mechanisms of the stated general type have in recent years been widely developed for adjustment of margin defining stops.
According to one known species of the stated general type of margin stop adjusting structures, a margin stop to be adjusted, as an initial step in the adjusting procedure therefor, is required to be brought into margin-limiting engagement with a counterstop, this being accomplished in a usual manner, for example by operation of ther conventional carriage release lever, followed by movement of the carriage. Subsequently to this, the operator is required to operate a special manipulative control to unlock the margin stop for adjustment along its support and to render the unlocked stop temporarily stationary with respect'to the counterstop. Thereupon with this condition maintained, the carriage is moved to the position where the stop is desired to be active in the future, the adjustment of the margin stop on itsV support to the new margin deiining position being resultant. To secure the thus adjusted vstop in the new stopping position on its support and to render it movable again with respect to the counterstop, the operator finally restores th stated special manipulative control. v
According to the known structure to which reference has been made in the preceding paragraph, an operator must be ever conscious and careful to bring the margin stop in its old adjusted or set position into abutting relationship with the counterstop before the special manipulative. control is operated. Shouldan operator fail to follow this prescribed procedure, the device will either not function at all, or it will function .imperfectly, meaning of course, that for practical and useful action it must be operated in` accordance with the hereinabove outlined rigid procedure. Should the operator fail to follow the prescribed procedure, control over the stop to be adjusted is liable to be lost temporarily, and the operator is not only apt to become confused, but must make a fresh start.
According to the present invention, a margin stop is releasable from its support by operating force applied on a remote control, and release of the stop occurs immediately in case an abutting relationship has previously been established between the stop and counterstop. However, if the stated relationship is yet to be established, operating pressure exerted on said control will have resultful effect automatically when the required abutting relationship of the margin stop and counterstop is brought about by carriage movement. said control, if the required relationship of the stop and oounterstop is established, renders the stop stationary with respect to the counterstopv and substantially at the same time unlocks the stop from its support.v When operating pressure on said control takes effect to render the stop stationary with respect to the counterstop, the said control has the further effect to release or maintain released the letter-feed mechanism. Consequently the stop is always under perfect control, either locked to its support in adjusted position, or held in fixed relationship with the counterstop for facilitating adjustment by carriage movement. Y
In View of the foregoing, it is an important object of the invention to provide a stop adjusting device of the stated general species whichy lends itself to more carefree and efficient nipulation by the operator.
It is particularly also an object of the inventionto provide efcient, reliably operative means whereby in a stop adjusting feature of the stated species, an unlocking operation of a stop by a remote control mustfollow oris delayed to follow under any circumstances-the bringing of the stop by carriage movement into abutting relatio with the counterstop. 'v
It is also-an kobject of the invention to provide stop unlocking means including a control therefor of such structure that when operating pressure is exerted on saidcontrol there will follow a resultiul effect to release a stop for adjustment only in the event such stop previously has been given an abutting relationship with the counterstop, or following establishment of such abutting relationship by carriage movement while operating pressure is applied on'said control, but in no other event.

tionary with respect to the counterstop consequential to the stated resultful eiiect, and whereby as an adjunct phase to said resultful effect the carriage will be free for movement to adjust the unlocked margin stop.
It is furthermore an object of the invention to provideA an` easily and conveniently manipulative margin stop adjusting structure wherein stop adjustment results from carriage movement, and not by unreliable spring power as has been employed in some prior devices.
It is another object of the iriveritionl to; pro-J vide a margin stop adjusting device of the stated species having eflicient provision to suppress operativeness of a manipulative control for stop unlocking action, until such time or unless a margin stop to be adjusted is rst brought into abutting relationship with the connterstop.
Other objects and features will be in part obvious and in part pointed out particularly as the following description of a preferred embodiment of'rthe invention proceeds.

To pla-ce the" carriage speedily in any desired position, there is provided on each carriage end a usual carriage release lever or key 24 which when displaced toward the front of the machine will cause an upward' displacement of the carriagev feed rack I1 free of the pinion 22. Said carriage release levers 241 are pivoted as indicated atV 25 upon the ends I4 of the carriage, andY each has al link connection 26 with one ofi the arms 20 that support the feed rack Il. The carriage I0 has extending parallel to the platen, to the rear thereof, see' Figure 3, a bar 32`y which supports or carries adjustably' therealong a left margin stop 33' and a right margin stop 34. The bar 32', See also Figure '7, is fastened at opposite ends by bolts 35 to the opposite carriage ends lli. The' said' bar 32 has notches 36 along the lower edge' thereof at intervals corresponding to the' letter-feed spaces, and each `of the stops 33 and 34 is equipped with a device generally designated by the numeral 3T which normally `in cooperation` with the notches 36 of the' bar 32 serves to lock or detent the stated stops 33, 34 individually inV margin defining positions. . each detent device 31 comprises a pintl'e 38 having. a transverse cut 40 therein and carrying xedly at the rear an arm vlll'. Each pintle 3`8` is accommodated pivotally ina transverse perforation ofy its margin stop. Saidtransverse cut 40 forms' on the pintle a detenting tooth at 42 for margin stop holding engagement withrany one of the notches 36 of the rack bar 32. A torsion spring 43 accommodated upon each pintle 38 between the margin stop andthe arm 4I is arranged toI urge the latter resiliently for' the pintle in the marginv stop to turn' appropriately to cause the detenting tooth 42 to bite into whichever one of the rack notches 36 is opposite thereto. The' pintle 38 is circular inA front of the' transverse out, and thus a shoulder is provided along the front edge of the transverse cut 40' which when the stop is assembled on the rackl serves to retain the pintle on the stop by cooperation with the front face of the rack bar 32. The transverse cut 4U in the pintle 38 ofA the left hand margin stop 33 is appropriately provided so that, as viewed from the front of the machine, the deteiit tooth 42 formed thereby enters into the racknotch by clockwise rotation of the pintle, the spring 43 for such stop being appropriately arranged to urge the pintle clockwise. Con'- versely, the transverse cut 40 in the pintle 38 of the right hand margin stop 33 is appropriately provided for the detent tooth 42 to enter the rack ,119mb by anti-clockwise rotation of the pintle, the spring 43 being appropriately arranged to urge the pintle anti-clockwisa y The stated margin stops 33, 34 cooperate with a usual frame-carried counterstop 46, see Figures 1 and 4, for left and right margin gaging function. Said counterstop 46, see Figure 1, is in the form of an upright arm which at itsvlower end pivots on a stationary stud 41 and which protrudes upwardly through a substantially Vrectangular clearance 48 in a top plate 50 of a housing 5I, the latter constituting part of theyrigid framework of the machine. The counterstop 46 has capacity for limited lateral motion in the clearance 48, a spring 52 being associated with the counterstop to cause the same normally to lean against the right side of the clearance 48.
Motion of the carriage in carriage return direc-v in letter-feed direction is limited by the marginA stop 34 riding leftwardly against the counterstop 46 and displacing the latter leftwardly to the limit provided by the clearance 48. When the carriage in the course of typing a line nears the leftward limit, the margin stop 34 during a letterfeed movement engages the counterstop 46 to displace it substantiallythe equivalent of a letterfeed space. This displacement is utilized to cause the locking of the type keys when a certain line-end position has been reached, in a manner not shown but well known in the art. Subsequently to this, additional characters may be typed after the counterstop is lowered by operation of a margin release key, not shown.
In advance of reaching the counterstop 46, the margin stop 34 may operate a usual bell signal, not shown, as a rst warning to the operator of the approach of the line end.
For the'moment drawing attention again to the construction of the margin stop detenting device 31, it will be noted that the tooth 42 of the pintle in the margin stop 33 tends to bite rmer into the engaged tooth notch when the margin stop rides against'the counterstop.' On the other hand the tooth 42 of the pintle in the margin stop 34 tends to bite rmer into the rack notch 36 when margin stop 34 limits carriage travel in cooperation with the counterstop. The notches 36 are of V form, very wide, and aiord strong teeth therebetween. Moreover, by reason of the shape of the notches, the teeth 42 of the pintles can likewise be of a very strong form, and also will freely enter the wide notches, and will take a rm grip therein.
Adjustment of either of the margin stops 33 and 34 is effected upon operation ofr a remote control 66, through movement of the carriage. This is after a margin stop to be adjusted is first located against the counterstop and thereby selected for adjustment. For eiecting the release of whichever stop 33 or 34 is selected for adjustment, there is provided forwardly of the counterstop 46 a margin stop releaser in the form of a slide 53 which by an upward displacement isadapted to release the locking device 31 of the,
selected stop. For releasing action upon said detenting device, said slide .53 has a saddle 54 which is adapted for engagement with a protuberance or pin 55 provided on and projecting forwardly from the pintle arm y4I.v Said slide 53 is 4guided and retained near its top for sliding movement in a notch Gllwhich is generally of dovetail shape, An arm 56 on which the lower end of the slide 53is pivotally carried by means of a pin-51,y serves-to guide the slide vertically at 64. a lower point. Said arm 56 is pivotally carried on a stud 59 provided in a bracket 58 which is carried within the housing 5 I. A spring 6l having opposite ends attached to the arm 56 and an arm 62 of the bracket 58, urges the slide 53 to the normal, lower position wherein an ear 63 of the arm 56 abuts the bracket 58 as in Figure 3.
The said manipulative control 66 is preferably provided upon the carriage I0, and through a mechanism to be described presently, may operate said releaser or slide 53 in any position of the carriage. Said mechanism comprises a b-ar 61 extending lengthwise of the carriage, which normally with slight clearance underlies a roll 68 carried by a pin 12 on the slide 53. Said bar 61 is of rectangular cross section for stiiness, and is guided at opposite ends for bodily upward displacement by means of headed studs 10 projecting rigidly from the margin stop supporting bar 32, said bar having at each end an upreaching extension 69 provided with a slot 1| for guided association with one of the studs 16, and each of the studs having a large spacer 69a between its head and the bar 32. A rod 13 extending between .the ends i4 of the carriage has near each carriage end an arm 'I4 which has an articulation as at 15 with the bar 61. The rod 13 is pivotally carried upon the carriage in a manner to be brought out later in detail, and is pivotally disvplaceable by the manipulative control 66 in order to raise the bar 61 and thereby operate the margin stop releaser 53, the manipulative control 66 being in the form of a lever and having a link connection 16 with an arm 11 reaching rearwardly from the rod 13. For pivotal support of the rod 13, see Figures 5 and '7, each carriage end i4 has a bracket extension 18 secured thereto by a screw 36 and by the screw 35 which fastens the margin stop bar 32. The manipulative control 66, by means of a pivot stud 8|, is carried on a further bracket plate 62 which as indicated by a screw 63 is rigid with the bracket 13 on the right carriage end.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the rod 13 carries the arm 11 upon a reduced round end-portion 63, said arm 11 having rigid therewith a long sleeve 31 which has keyed association at 88 with the rod 13. A nut QI on the rod portion 36 clamps the sleeve 81 with its arm 11 fast on the rod 13. Said ,sleeve 81 pivots in the right hand end of the carriage in the bracket 18 thereat, and at the left hand end of the carriage the rod 13 pivots directly in the bracket E3 thereat. It will thus be seen that the rod 13, the two arms 14, the sleeve 81 andthe arms 11 constitute a unit pivotally carried onthe carriage.
According to the invention, as stated hereinbefore, a margin stop to be releasable for adjustment must first be brought into a relation of engagement with the counterstop 46 by carriage movement. To compel such procedure, and eliminate waste manipulations, there is provided in association with the margin stop releaser 53 a blocking element or controller 35. This controller blocks the releaser 53 against upward, margin stop releasing movement at all times except when one or the other margin stop 33, 34 has been rnovedr into margin establishing relation with the counterstop 46. As best seen in Figures 1, 3 and 4, said controller 35 is carried near its lower end seatedly'in a circumferential groove of thestud 51 of the stop releaser 53, the controller 35 being providedwith a slot 96 of key-hole form to button it to the stud 51, a strongspring 31 stretched between thesaid stud 51 and the lower extremityv of the controller, keeping the lower, reduced encll of the slot 95 permanently drawn upA and seated in the. underside of the circumferential groove of the stud 51. The controller 95 reaches contiguous to the releaser 53 upwardly above the pin. 12 and is perforated to fit loosely a spacing collar between the roller 53 and the releaser 53, and. has capacity for some displacement toward the front ofthe machine. The spring 91, aforementioned, tends to keep the controller 95 resiliently leaning rearwardly against the releaser 53. While the controller is so leaning against the releaser 53, ears 98- rearwardly reaching thereon and flanking the opposite sides of the releaser 53, underlie the top plate 55 of the housing 5|. Consequently the releaser 53 is blocked or locked against upward movement if the stated normal condition prevails. Furthermore, the bar 61 by being blocked against upward movement by the roll 68 on the controller 95 in turn blocks operation of the control 55. However, this condition, as will become evident, is prevalent only so long as neither margin stop 33, Sii is in active engagement withL the counterstop d5.
The controller 95 embodies on the front side thereof, near its upper end, a V-shaped cam in the form of an attached plate. As either margin stop 33 or 34 is brought into margin establishing relation with the counterstop 46 by movement of the carriage, the beveled rear end of the pin 55 of the detent device for such stop engages the cam |0| and by riding to the crest thereof displaces the controller 95 forwardly about the point of fulcrum afforded by the groove of the pin 51. The displacement is suicient to position the controller ears 98 clear of the rear edge of the plate 50 so that the releaser 53 is thus free for upward, stop unlocking movement.
From the foregoing it will be seen that operating pressure exerted on the control 65 can have a margin stop releasing effect only in the event a margin stop has previously been brought into a position against the counterstop 45, or consequently to establishment of such position by carriage movement, providing operating force on the control is then still applied. In other words, whether operating pressure on the control 65 is exerted prematurely or not, there will under no circumstances occur a release of a margin stop 33 or 34 until such a stop is in or approximates a margin establishing relation with the counterstop 45. If neither of the stops is in such position, then the controller 95 will remain in rearward position as illustrated in Figure 1, with its ears 98 underneath the plate 50.
When the releaser 53 moves upwardly into engagement with the pin 55 to release the detent device 31 of the stop 33 or 34, then the pin 55 of such stop will be seated in the saddle 54 of the releaser, wherefore so long asv the releaser 53 then is maintained operated, the stop is held stationary with respect to the counterstop 4S. The stop is then adjustable along the bar 3'2 through carriage movement, the roll 58 having rolling contact with the bar 51. When subsequently through carriage movement the position of the carriage is reached where the margin stop is desired to be active in the future, the control 6B is released and the bar 61 will restore to the normal position seen in Figure 1, and, furthermore, the releaser 53 will restore, and the detent device 31 will restore to margin stop holding position under the tension of the spring 43, thus securing the stop in the new position as on the bar 32. To assist or assure the restoration of the detent device,v the controller has a topY ledge |:02- overlyingthe pin 5 5: of the releaser the ledge being, effective: during the restoration of the releaser 53 to.- descend on the pin 55. The lateral ends of the ledge |02 are slightly upturned to prevent. the pinsY 55 from catching thereon when during carriage` movement eithermargin stop` approaches the counterstop 46.
As has been stated the actual adjustment of a margin stop 33 or 34 is preceded by -rst bringing the stop to be adjusted against the1 counterstop 46 by carriage. movement. However, if an operator exerts operating pressure onV the con-- troll 66 prematurely, a. margin. stop,y will neverthe-n less become appropriately unlocked when through carriage movement the appropriate relation-,be tween the stop and counterstop.v is established.4

Summary To. adjust the line end margin stop 34 the operator best operates the carriage release lever 2c to bring this stop first against thev counterstop vby carriage movement. The detent` device 31 of the margin stop 34 is then in position for operation by the releaser 5.3 and additionally the controller will have been displaced forwardly by the cam |0| so that the releaser 53 isA free for upward movement. During the stated movement of the carriage the operator may exert operating pressure on the control 66 but this is of no avail until the controller 95 is forwardly cammed by the cam |0|. Upon operation of the. control 66 either by reason of continued pressure thereon or yby finger pressure thereon fol-l lowing the movement of the margin stop against the counterstop 45,l the bar 61, by operation of the rod 13, will receive an upward movement and will displace the roller 58 with the releaser 53 upwardly. At the same time through the link |04' and the parts |05 to |01, inclusive, the carriage release lever with associated mechanism will become operated. the' rack 32, the operator being required to release the control 6B when the position of the carriage has been reached at which it is desired to have the stop located. The release of the manipulative control restores the carriage to the control of the escapement and restores the releaser 53, wherefore the margin stop will become secured in its new location on the bar 32. The releaser being restored, it follows that the margin stop is again free for movement bodily with the carriage and to cooperate with the counterstop 46 in margin gaging action.
The procedure for adjusting the return limiting margin stop 33 is similar to the procedure outlined in connection with the stop 34, except that the margin stop 33 may be brought against the counterstop by merely pushing the carriage rightwardly in return direction, the usual typewriter escapement permitting such movement.
It will be understood that the adjustable stops 33, 34 may be carried on the frame and that the counterstop may be on the carriage, and that many modications and departures may beresorted to within the general purposes and scope of the invention.
YWhat is claimed is:
l. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a margin stop, means to support said margin stop for adjustment in parallel With the movement of the carriage, means to lock the margin stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop with which said margin stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction, a device including a manual control, to release the margin stop locking means and to render the margin stop stationary with respect to the counterstop, and governing means including means adjustable along with the stop to cause said device to function effectively upon application of operating force on said manual control only if the margin stop and said counterstop are in or approximate said engaged relation, or consequently to establishment of such relation through carriage movement during maintenance of operating force on said manual control.
2. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a margin stop, means to support said margin stop for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage, means to lock the margin stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop with which said margin stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction. a device capable of effective operation to release the lock means of said margin stop and to hold the latter stationary with respect to the counterstop, two supplementary control means for said -device to cause by combined action an eiective operation of said device, one of said control means comprising a manual control element remote to said stop, and the other control means comprising cooperative means on said device and said margin stop to provide for eectve operation of the device responsive to application of operating force on said manual control if a relation of engagement of the margin stop with the counterstop exists, or responsive to establishment of such relation under condition of applied operating force on said control element.
3. In a typewriting machine or the like, having a frame,y and having a letter-feed carriage movable lineally on the frame; a margin stop,
1 l`` means to support said margin stop on said carriage adjustably in parallel With the line of movement of the carriage, means to lock said margin stop in diierent positions of adjustment and in condition for release, a counterstop on the frame with which said margin stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction, a device including a manually operable member in a location remote to said margin stop for releasing said stop locking means and rendering the margin stop stationary with respect to the frame, and means including an element on said margin stop, having control over said device so that ii' operating force is applied to said member there Will result an effectiveoperation oi said device only if the margin stop is in or approximates said engaged relation with the counterstop or consequently to establishment of such relation by carriage movement under maintenance of operating force on saidy member, the margin stop being adjustable to a new position upon eiective operation of said device through movement of the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a margin stop, means to support said margin stop for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage, means to lock the margin stop in adjusted position and in condition i'or release, a counterstop with which said margin stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction, a device` including -amanual control to release the margin stop lock-- ing means and to lock the margin stop stationary with respect to the counterstop, and means to block said device against operation at all times except when the margin stop and the counterstop are in or approximate said engaged relation, said blocking means comprising, a releasable blocking member, and means to release the blocking member under margin stop control whenever said margin stop reaches said engaged relation. y

In a typewriting` machine, a frame, a ca riage movable lineally on said frame, a, margin stop on said carriage, means to support said margin stop on the carriage for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage, means to lock the margin stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop on the frame with which said margin stop assumes an `engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction. a device including a manual control to release the margin stop locking means and to hold the margin stop stationary with respect to the counterstop, blocking means, includinga member on the frame, normally conditioning said device against operation by said control, and means including means associated with the margin stop for movement therewith parallel to the carriage to render'said blocking means automatically ineffective whenever the carriage is given a position so that `the margin stopv is in or approximates said engaged relation with the counterstop.
6. In a typewriting machine, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a left and including a releaser, operable to release Whichever margin stop may be in said carriage-travellimitingrelation with said counter-stop means,l
and at the same time to hold such margin stop stationary with respect to the eounterstop means, means to block said releaser against operation, and means including means on each margin stop to incapacitate said blocking means Whenever a margin stop is brought into carriage-travel-limiting relation with the counterstop means.
7. Ina typewriting machine or the like, having a frame, and a carriage movable lineally on said frame; a carriage stop, meansto support said stop for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage, means to locksaid stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop with which said stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction, and means to release said stop lock means comprising, a manually operable ycontrol remote to said stop, governing means supported for adjustment along with said stop, and means under supplemental control of said manually operable control and said governing means to effect a stop releasing operation, if the stop bycarriage movement and under condition of applied operating force on said manually operable control is brought substantially' into said engaged relation, or ifthe stop is substantially in the saidengaged relation and then operating force is applied on said manually operable control'.

In a typewriting machine er the like, a frame, a carriage lineallyV guided on said frame, a carriage stop, means to support saidstop on the carriage for adjustment in parallel with the carriage, a releasable stop lock on said stop, a stop releaser operably supported on the frame and being in the direction ofv movement of the carriage very small in comparison with the carriage, means on said stop operable by said releaser to release said stop lock` whenever the stop occupies a specific position relative to said frame, means to operate said releaser including, a manual control remote to said stop, and governing means comprising means on said carriage supported stop effective if the stop by carriage movement and under condition of applied operating force on said manual control is moved to said speeiiic position, to govern said releaser to give fer-th a stop releasing operation at the end of such movement.

In a typewriting machine or the like having a frame member, a, carriage member movable lineally on said frame member and a releasable letter-feed mechanism; a stop supported on one of said members for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage member and including means to lock said stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop on said other member with which said stop is engageable in the position of the carriage member dened by the adjustable stop, a device adapted for operation to release the locking means for said stop and to release at the same time the letterfeed mechanism, and means to suppress operation of said device in all positions of the carriage member except the one dened by said stop, said suppressing means comprising governor means including means adjustable along with the stop.

In combination with a typewriter having a frame, an escapement controlled carriage, and means operable for disengaging said carriage from said escapement control; two margin stops slidably mounted on said carriage, a dog for resetting either of said stops along said carriage, a driving unit to drive said operable means and said dog, and a displaceable controlling element in the path of said stops adapted to prevent the transfer of power from said unit to said dog except at such times when the controlling element is displaced by either one of said stops during a resetting operation.
16. In a typewriting machine or the like having a frame member and a carriage member movable lineally on said frame member; a stop supported on one of said members for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage member and including means to lock said stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, -a counterstop on said other member with which said stop is engageable in a position of the carriage member defined by the adjustable stop, a manual control on the carriage member, a device positively operable by said manual control in any position of the carriage member to release said locking means for said stop, means to suppress operation of said device in all positions of the carriage member except the one dened by said stop, and means responsive to the operation of said device to hold said stop stationary with respect to said other member, whereby if the carriage member is moved to the position dened by said stop under condition of manual operating force applied on said control, said device and control will become operated automatically, making perceptible to the operator that adjustment of the stop Will ensue at further movement of the carriage member.
17. In a typewriting machine or the like having a frame and a carriage movable lineally on said frame; a stop supported for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage and including means to lock said stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop with which said stop is engageable in a carriage position dened by the adjustable stop, a
14 manual control,- a device positively operable by said manual control to release said locking means for said stop, means to block operation of said device and therefore said control, arranged for displacement from an effective to an ineffective position, and means adjustable along with said stop and engageable with the blocking means to displace it to ineffective position as the carriagev reaches the position defined by the adjustable stop, whereby whenever the carriage is moved to the position dened by said stop under condition of manual operating force applied on said control, said device and control will become operated automatically, making perceptible to the operator that adjustment of the stop will ensue at further carriage movement.
18. In a typewriter in combination, a carriage carrying right and left hand settable marginal stops, a dog to disengage, hold, and re-engage either of said stops in a line along the length of said carriage, a driving unit to actuate said dog, and a governing element displaceable by one or the other of said stops and adapted to time the imparting of force to said dog from said unit by being displaced.
19. In a margin-setting mechanism, a frame, a carriage on said frame, a plurality of margin stops slidably disposed on said carriage, a dog on said frame for resetting either of said stops, a driving unit on said carriage, and a controlling element on said frame normally preventing said unit from driving said dog and adapted to enable said unit to drive said dog upon the impinging of either of said stops against said element by moving said carriage.
20. In a typewriting machine or the like having a frame member and a carriage member movable lineally on the frame member; a margin stop supported on one of said members for adjustment thereon in parallel with the movement of the carriage member and including means to lock said stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop on the other member with which said stop is engageable for arrest of the carriage member, a device operable to release said stop and including a part on said frame member, and means to suppress the operation of said part except when the stop is in engagement with the counterstop, comprising, operation blocking means for said part mounted for movement from an effective to an ineffective position, and means to move said blocking means to ineffective position, comprising, a cam element on said stop, and a cam element on the frame member displaceable transversely to the carriage member by said rst cam element.
2l. The invention set forth in claim 20, said stop movable relatively to the counterstop out of cooperative range therewith, and said cam elements comprising cam faces formed for one cam element to glide over the other in either direction of movement of the carriage member.

In a typewriting machine or the like, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a carriage stop, means to support said stop for adjustment in parallel with the movement of the carriage, means to lock said stop in adjusted position and in condition for release, a counterstop with which said stop assumes an engaged relation in limiting carriage travel in one direction, and means to release said stop locking means and concomitantly to hold said stop stationary with respect to said counterstop, comprising, a control remote to said stop, and means to translate operating force applied on said control into 15 an eiectiveoperation of said lock releasing and stop holding means contingent on said stop being in the said position of engagement with the counterstop or contingent on establishment of such engagement by carriage movement while operating force is sustained on said control.
23. In a typewriting machine or the like, a frame, a carriage movable lineally on said frame, a left and a right margin stop, means to support said stops for individual adjustment in parallel with the carriage, means to lock said stops individually in adjusted position and in condition for individual release, counterstop means with which the two margin stops are adapted to assume opposite carriage-travel-limiting relations, and means to release the locking means with respect to either of said stops, said last means including, a manual control remote to both said stops and separate operation governing means for said releasing means, adjustable along with each of the stops to cause translation of operating force applied on said control into an effective operation of the releasing means contingent on and" with reference to Whichever stop may be residing in carriage-travel-limiting engagement with the counterstopY means, and also to cause translation of applied operating force onsaid control into an effective operation of the releasing means with reference to whichever stop by carriage movement and under condition of applied operat-l ing force on said control is brought into engaged relation with the counterstop means.
