Description

Feb. 2, 1954 z. c. MANNING CIGAR AND CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Filed Sept. 1, 1948 IN V EN TOR.
W N N 2? N m a r Mm C Patented Feb. 2, 1954 UNITED STATES ATENT' OFFICE CIGAR AND CIGARETTE Zeno Carl Manning, San Francisco, qalit. A i n September a seas- 1. .8 1 Qlai ns. (01. 131-235) This invention relates to a cigar and cigarette extinguisher and has for one of its objects the provision of a simple, sanitary and highly emcient means for quickly extinguishing burning cigarv and cigarette butts and for ejecting such butts from the extinguisher and into a receptacle adapted to support said extinguisher without tilting or otherwise moving the receptacle.
Another object of the. invention is the provision of an extinguisher comprising a plurality of upstanding pins on which the cigar and cigarette butts are adapted to be impaled during extinguishment, and which pins have a stripper device associated therewith whereby said pins and stripper device are adapted to move relatively for stripping the said butts off said pins and for automatically ejecting or discharging such butts to one side of said pins for falling into a receptacle therefor.
Heretofore, as disclosed in United States Letter Patent No. 1,999,245 of Robert D. Mackenzie dated April 30, 1935., it has been old to provide impaling pins for cigar and cigarette butts with reciprocatory means for sliding the impaled butts off the pins. However, once the butts are off the pins, in devices of this kind, they tend to tall back on top of the pins and unless the extinguisher is shaken or tilted, the butts interfere with the extinguishment of subsequent cigars or cigarettes. Furthermore, the devices of this general character have heretofore been difficult to keep clean inasmuch as the ashes falling from the butts tend to become lodged about the bases of the pins, thereby preventing the reseating of the stripper, and also it is practically impossible to clean the area about the bases of the pins.
One of the objects of the present invention is the provision of improved means for overcoming' said objections.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through an ash and butt receptacle that includes the improved extinguisher. This view is taken along line I! of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device oi Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through a table model receptacle showing a slightly modified form of the invention. The extinguisher per se is shown in elevation in this view.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a still further form of the invention that is slightly different from the forms illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3. V
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the device of Fig. 4.

The butt is shown in dot-dash lines at I5 (Fig. 1), ejected from the stripper plate and falling onto bottom 3 at one side of the in assembly,
In the event the stripper plate 9 is released so as to fall to the position I4 seen in Fig. 1, the handle i3 will engage the side wall of the receptacle that is opposite to the extinguisher and the bent outer end portion iii of said projection 53 will project away from the wall so engaged by the handle to facilitate engaging said handle for swinging the stripper plate back to the full line position thereof as seen in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it is seen that the relative movement between the stripper plate and the base plate is such that a cigarette or cigar butt impaled on the pins will not only be removed from said pins but will be ejected from the stripperplate to one side of the pin assembly and ashes on plate 9 will be carried to the side of the pin assembly and will be discharged into the receptacle When the stripper plate is in the position It in Fig. 1, the pins and base plate are accessible for cleaning any ashes or tobacco from the top of plate l. This operation can be accomplished without moving the receptacle by merely swinging the stripper plate to one side.
In Fig. 3 substantially the same extinguisher structure is shown as in Figs. 1, 2, but in this the plate in a horizontal stationary position on said platform.
The pins in this form of the invention are shown as staples that are driven through the base plate from the underside of the latter so that their legs 2! project upwardly therefrom to form the pins on which the cigar and cigarette butts are adapted to be impaled for extinguishment.
The legs or pins 2'! are disposed in rows in this form of the invention, the same as in Fig. 2, and the stripper plate 28 has slots therein the same as stripper plate 9, there being a slot for each row of pins. The plate 28 is pivoted to the base plate 23 for swinging from full line position in Fig. 3 to the dot-dash line position 29, in which latter position a cigar or cigarettte butt on plate 28 will be ejected therefrom onto the bottom 22 at one side of platform 2|.
The plate 28 has a right angle extension 30 and handle 3| thereon that are substantially the same as extension i2 and projection |3 of Fig. 1.
The pins or staples 2! maybe frictionally secured to the base plate or may be soldered or otherwise secured to said plate.
While the platform 2| is not absolutely essential, itis desirable inasmuch as it rigidly sup- In Figs. 1 and 3 the extinguisher assembly is positioned within the ash and butt receptacle, which is not absolutely essential, although preferable in many instances. Also in Figs. 1 and 3 the stripper plate has a right angle extension with a handle thereon for swinging the stripper plate.
In the form of invention shown in Figs. 4, 5, a table tray 46 is shown having a lateral extension 4| formed thereon and projecting to one side of the tray Ml outwardly thereof (Fig. 5). A leg 42 extends downwardly from the extension 4| and supports the extension so the tray will not be apt to be upset when downward pressure is applied to the extension. Also, the leg 42 forms a vertically extending handle about which the forefinger of an operator may be curled for moving the tray from one place to another.
This extension 4| may carry the rows of upwardly projecting pins 43 that are similar in arrangement to the pins of Figs. 1 and 3.
A stripper plate 34 as seen in Figs. 4 and 5 is provided, said plate having a slot 55 for each row of pins. The said plate M is secured along the edge of the extension 4| that joins a side wall 46 of the receptacle 46 to a pivot 41 that extends at its ends through opposite side walls 39 of the receptacle Bil that adjoins the side wall 46. A handle 53 is rigidly secured to one projecting end of pivot 41 outwardly of one of the said side walls. Upon pressing downwardly on handle 50, the stripper plate 4% will be swung to dot-dash line position 52 (Fig. 5) and will clear the pointed ends of pins 43 for ejecting the cigar or cigarette butts into receptacle 4t.
Upstanding opposed side walls 53 may project upwardly from opposite sides of extension 4| and an end wall 54 may close the space between said side walls at their ends remote from receptacle 40 for preventing ashes from falling onto the table during the time the butts are impaledon the pins and during their removal and ejection.
Thus in the form of invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the handle for swinging the plate 44 is of a type that is different from the handles shown in Figs. 1, 3, and also the extinguisher assembly is not within the receptacle. It is obvious, however, that the same handles as are used in Figs. 1 and 3 could be used with the plate 44 of Figs. 4, 5, and also, the extinguisher assembly of Fig. 1 could be used on the extension M of Fig. 5 instead of having the pins 53 secured directly to the extension M. The provision of the extension, as shown in Fig. 5, makes possible the utilization thereof for securing the pins directly thereto. Also the slots 45 are open at their ends adjacent wall 54 and the plate 44 terminates at said wall.
From the above description it will be seen that in each form of the invention pins and a stripper plate are employed. There is relative movement between the stripper plate and the pins in each form whereby the impaled cigar or cigarette butt is carried to one side of the pin assembly and is ejected from said stripper plate to one side of the said assembly.
It is to be understood that the. pins may be stamped from sheet metal or may be cylindrical, square or of any desired cross-sectional contour as long as they have pointed free ends and are suitable for readily impaling cigar or cigarette butts thereon.
The rapid extinguishment is due to the rapid conduction of heat from the glowing end of the cigarette or cigar butt, hence it is preferable that the pins have relatively high heat conducting properliifisi Usually any metal'will suflice.
The spacing between pins is such that th cigarette, or cigar butts, will not meet with. undue resistance in being impaled. Usually if two or three of the pins are adapted to. enter a cigarette butt impaled thereon as seen in Fig. 1,. that. is sufficient.
In all forms of the invention the space below the stripper plate is readily cleaned, which is; a highly desirable feature inasmuch as it is impossible to keep all ashes, out of this space,
I claim:

In an extinguisher for burning cigar and cigarette butts having, a base member supporting a plurality of spaced pins vertically disposed and with their pointed ends uppermost for paling butts thereon,v a stripper plate adapted to be positioned over said base member and formed with an opening through which said pins extend in upwardly projecting relationship relative to said stripper plate, and. pivot. mean supporting said stripper plate and said base member for relative movement away from each other to an ejecting position in which said stripper plate is free from said pins and at one side of the latter in generally vertically extending position for stripping said butts from said pins for ejection of said butts to one side of Said pins.
