COLOSTOMY POUCH Filed Nov. 16, 1951 IN V EN TOR.
ug. a /L ATTOR N EY Patented Jan. 26, 1954 ED STAT i COLOSTOMY POUCH Paul A. Raiche, North Providence, R. I.,.assignor' to Davol Rubber Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application November 16, 1951, Serial No. 256,757 4 Claims. (Cl. 128283) to receive gases which would otherwise exert discomfortable pressure or escape and cause embarrassment to the patient.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a colostomy pouch with a support for an inflatable gas retainer, which may be quickly mounted and quickly detached by the patient.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a colostomy pouch embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail showing the bladder connection; and
Fig. 3 is an exploded view showing preferred connector parts.
It has been found desirable to provide a gas retention device for a colostomy pouch, whereby the patient is spared discomfort resultin from the flow of gases into the pouch and embarrassment if the pressure is relieved by escape of the gases from the pouch. To this end, I form the pouch with an outlet connection to which an inflatable sac is detachably secured whereby the gases escape into the sac, the sac being readily removed and readily replaced by a clean sac.
Referring to the drawings, the colostomy pouch It is of standard type, having a bag H with flexible front and rear walls l2, l3, an inflatable ring [4 provided with a center opening l5 leading to the bag interior, and side tabs I6, I! for receiving the ends of a belt. The front wall I 2 has an opening l8, preferably positioned just below the ring I4, and a connector base l9, see Figs. 2 and is cemented thereto, the connector base having a rear flange 20 and a downwardly inclined tubular extension 2!. The flange 26 has an openin 22 in alignment with the front wall opening l8, communicating with the bore 23 of the tubular extension 2|.
The lower, outer end of the tubular extension 2| is recessed to provide an enlarged bore 24 with an annular shoulder 25, whereby a threaded metal socket 26 may be lockingly inserted in the enlarged bore 24. A plug 2?, of hard rubber or the like, is then threaded into the socket, with an intermediate rubber washer 28. The plug 21 has a projecting tubular portion 29, and is bored as indicated at 30 to provide a free flow passage for gases from the bag I l.
The tubular portion 29 has a laterally extending tip flange 3!, see Fig. 3, whereby a flexible expansible sac 32 of thin rubber having a tubular neck 33 may be mounted on the tubular portion and detachably locked in place by a rubber band 34. The tubular portion 29 is provided with disk wings 35, 3'5 which are in the same plane, for grasping by the fingers when mounting or dismounting the sac.
The waste gases from the pouch thus expand into the sac, which is made of very thin material as compared to the body wall of the pouch, and
the patient is spared the discomfort of gas pressure Within the colostomy bag. Whenever an accumulation of gas occurs, the patient can excuse himself and then readily remove the sac, and replac it with a clean sac, thus avoiding embarrassment.
Although I have described a specific embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that changes in the size, shape, arrangement, and material of the parts may be made to meet different colostomy requirements, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A colostomy pouch, comprising a bag, a flexible ring having an opening into the bag, a connection device secured to said bag, and a flexible sac, said device including a base with a rear flange secured to the bag and a tubular extension, said sac being detachably mounted on the extension, said bag having an opening in the wall thereof communicating with the tubular extension for release of gases from the bag into the sac.
2. A colostomy pouch, comprising a bag having flexible front and rear walls, a flexible ring on one wall having an opening leading to the bag interior, a second opening in one wall of the bag, a connection device having an air passage communicating with the second opening, and an expansible air retention device detachably secured to said connection device and communicating with the connection device air passage.
3. A colostomy pouch, comprising a bag havwith the second opening, a plug having a bore and mounted in said tubular extension and having flexible front and rear walls, a flexible ring on one wall having an opening leading to the bag interior, a second opening in one wall of the ing a projecting tubular portion, and an exa connection device having a tubular extenpansible sac detachably secured to said projectsion with an air passage communicating with the 5 ing t b m plug portion second opening, and an expansible sac detachably secured to said tubular extension and communicating with the connection device air passage.
4. A colostomy pouch, comprising a bag having flexible front and rear walls, a flexible ring on one wall having an opening leading to the bag PAUL A. RAICHE.
