3 Claims.
The present invention relates to the suction collection of polishing, buiiing and grinding dust, and has particular reference to a novel construction for a dust collector hood for the polishing of small articles such as earrings and the like.
Dust collector hoods for the polishing of small articles are mounted on a bench or table to extend over the polishing wheel, and have an opening in the base of the hood communicating with a suction pipe, whereby the dust is continually withdrawn from the hood as the polishing proceeds. When the articles to be polished are small, such as earrings and the like, there is danger of loss, as the suction opening is normally located at the rear of the hood and any article which becomes loose falls directly into the opening.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive hood construction Which exits dust from the polishing operation through the suction opening while effectively preventing loss of small articles.
another object of the invention is to provide a dust receiving compartment in a dust collector hood which is positioned to directly receive polishing dust while being out of the line of fall of an object being polished.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dust receiving compartment in a dust collector hood with a removable wire screen, which may be readily removed and cleaned when necessary.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred construction for a dust collector hood embodying the invention, the hood being shown mounted on a work table and partially enclosing a polishing wheel;
Fig. 2 is a vertical Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View wire screen.
Referring to the drawings, the novel dust collector hood it includes a base ll of trapezoid form, vertical sides i2, i3 and a shaped back plate it, the parts being preferably of sheet metal. The sides have their lower edges l5, l6 seated on the tapering side edges of the base, and their rear edges ii, is arcuately shaped as illussection on the line 2-2 of of the removable 'TED STATES PATENT OFFICE trated; the back plate has its bottom edge l9 seated on the rear ed go of the base and its rear edges 2B, 2! conforming to and seated on the side rear edges, the meeting edges being received The front edges 23, 2 arcuately to receive a 25 on which a in angle strips 22 and preferably soldered thereto.
:3 of the sides are recessed transverse rotatable shaft polishing wheel 28 is keyed, to
substantially house the wheel in the hood.
10 The back plate has its upper portion 27 bent than the side 23 to ac to be polished into th edge of the wheel.
A transverse lower upright portion commodate a right-handed operator who can thus readily insert an article e hood to engage the lower partition 28 is provided, having a 29 which extends vertically from the base in slightly spaced tangential relation to the rear portion of the wheel, and then upwardly and the back plate.
the partition are surfaces of the hood The whereby a compartment BI aligned with the lower rearwardly as a top portion 36 to sides and the back edge of respectively secured to the inner sides and the back plate, is formed at the lower its upper end which is and is preferably centrally edge of the wheel to directly receive the polishin dust therefrom.
A removable wire screen covers the opening 32,
the screen being desig seated in a trough 3 portion 29 just below nated as and being slidably l secured to the partition the opening 32; the side 53 is provided with a vertical slot 35 through which the screen may be inserted and removed, a manually graspable ring or the like 36 being provided for this purpose. are tapered to confor sides 12, I3 and the w The sides 37,
323 of the screen In to the angularity of the ire mesh ii: of the screen is of a auge to correspond to the size of the articles being polished.
bench or table which cured thereto, with has a suction pipe 43 sethe flange 42 removably mounted on a work polishing, buffing or bench or table, to receive grinding dust from the wheel through the wire screen and to transfer the dust through the compartment into the suction pipe, the dust receiving opening being in direct line with the lower edge of the Wheel and the suction pipe opening being closed to direct entry of articles being polished by the lower part of the front partition. Small articles such as earrings will not, therefore, be drawn into the suction pipe and instead will fall on the base in front of the compartment, where they may be readily reached and removed.
Although I have described a specific constructional embodiment of the invention, it is clear that changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made to comply with difierent polishing, buffing, or grinding operations, without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A dust collector hood having a base, sides, and a back plate, said sides having recessed front edges for receiving the shaft of a polishing wheel, a compartment at the lower rear end of the hood having a front transverse partition extending between the sides and upwardly from the base and to the back plate, said compartment having a suction opening in the lower portion thereof and said partition having an opening at a height for receiving polishing dust from the lower portion of the polishing wheel, and a screen extending across said partition opening.
2. A dust collector hood having a base, sides, and a back plate, said sides having recessed 'front edges for receiving the shaft of a polishing wheel, a compartment at the lower rear end of the hood having a front transverse partition extending between the sides and upwardly from the base and to the back plate, said compartment having a suction opening in the lower portion thereof and said partition having an opening at a height for receiving polishing dust from the lower portion of the polishing wheel, and a screen slidably mounted on said partition and extending across said partition opening, one side of the hood having a slot aligned with the screen for insertion and removal thereof.
3. A dust collector hood having a base, sides, and a back plate, said sides having recessed front edges for receiving the shaft of a polishing wheel, a compartment at the lower end of the hood having a front transverse partition extending between the sides and upwardly from the base and to the back plate, said compartment having a suction opening in the lower portion thereof having a depending flange and said partition having an opening at a height for receiving polishing dust from the lower portion of the polishing wheel, and a removable screen extending across said partition opening.
