Description

(No Model.)
7 J.H.F RENOH.
FIRE KINDLER.
Patented Oct. 31, 1882.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. FRENCH, OF WILLIMANTIC, CONNECTICUT.
FIRE-KINDILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,687, dated October 31, 1882.
Application filed May 11, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FRENcH, of VVillimantic, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers and Means for Protecting the Same and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the package forfire-kindlers made by theprocess patented to me in Letters Patent of the United States No. 243,240, dated June 21, 188]. 5 and it consistsin the omission of all ingredients from the coating that is applied to the box or wrapper, excepting theglue alone.
The oil-soaked pieces of wood are wrapped in any suitable wrappersuch as paper or a box-and the package is then varnished with or dipped in ordinary glue, as shown by the shading lines on the outside of the outer wrapper in the drawing. This coating of ordinary glue is cheaper and more available than any (No model.)
coating heretofore used, and forms a varnish that is impervious to the volatile gases arising from the oil-soaked wood, thereby preserving the inflammable qualities of the kindlers and decreasing the liability to accident by fire and to discomfort by leakage while the packages are in store.
The mode of application of the coating to the package may of course be varied, as by dip- 35 ping the wrapper first into the glue and afterward applying the wrapper so coated to the package.
I disclaim what has been secured to me by the Letters Patent aforesaid and what I have 40 described and claimed in two pending applications filed September 7, 1882.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a package of 5 wood or other suitable material saturated with an inflammable oil, and havingawrapper coated with glue, substantially as set forth.
JAMES H. FRENCH.
