The end of the body l2 through which the bore Y 20 opens is externally screw threaded as at 58 and extending through the body l2 adjacent the threads 58 is a slot '60. A valve body 62 is mounted in the bore 26 to rotate about the longitudii nal axis of the body I2 with its inner end seated against the bearing surface 24 and is held in place therein for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the body 12 by an internally screw threaded retaining ring 64 which threadably engages the threads 58 on the body I2. Secured as by cap screws 56 (Fig. 7) to the valve body 62 for movement in the slot 60 is a stop 68 by means of which rotary movement of the valve body 62' within the bore is restricted. The end of the valve body 62 remote from the bearing surface 24 is externally screw threaded as at it for coupling to a supply of plasticized adhesive material and extending axially into the valve through the threaded end thereof is an inlet passage 12 which communicates through diametrically opposite ports 14 with the curved passages l8.
In use the valve body 62 is coupled by its threaded end 19 to a source of plasticized adhesive material containing aggregates and the port '28-is coupled to a source of air pressure. Upon rotating the valve 62 to align the ports 14 with the curved passages 18 the material will flow through the passages IS in first divergent and then convergent streams about the post 22. By turning the hand wheel 56, the turning plug 50 may be moved to bring the ports 54 into registry with the passages 40 so as to direct jets of air through the jet ports 38 and into the cores of the streams of material passing through the convergent passages ['6 to aerate and homogenize said material. As the aerated and homogenized material issues from the convergent passages IE it enters the discharge passage and is propelled therethrough and projected onto the surface to be coated by the air passing through the air discharge passage 30. Obviously if so desired a plate 16 having a discharge opening 18 of a. selected cross section may be attached to the gun adjacent the discharge nozzle to enablethe material to be directed onto the work in any desired manner.
What is claimed is:
1. A gun for homogenizing and aerating a flowing stream of plasticized adhesive containing aggregates and for projecting said aggregate bear ing adhesive onto a surface, said gun comprising an elongated body having an axial recess extending thereinto through one end thereof. said body having a transverse slot opening through the side thereof and communicating with the recess intermediate the ends thereof, said body having oppositely disposed curved passages therein which communicate with the recess in diametrically opposed relation and convergent passages therein which open into the curved passages remote from the recess, said body having a discharge passage opening through the end thereof remote from the recess which discharge passage communicates with the convergent passages adjacent the convergent ends thereof, a turning plug mounted in the recess to rotate about the axis thereof. said turning plug having an inlet passage opening through the end thereof remote from the body and also having diametrically opposed openings extending through the wall adjacent the inner 'end thereof for establishing communication between the inlet passage and the curved passages,
means carried by the turning plug and extend- ;ing through the slot for rotating said turning plug in the recess and selectively registering the openingswith the curved passages, said body having jet passages therein which open into the curved passagesin axial alignment with the convergent passages for introducing homogenizing and aerating air into plasticized adhesive material flowing through said passages, and said body having an air passage disposed therein which aligns with the axis of the discharge passage for directing an air blast against homogenized and aerated adhesive material issuing from the convergent passages and propelling said material through the discharge passage and onto a surface.
2. A gun for homogenizing and aerating a flowing stream of plasticized adhesive containing aggregates and for projecting said aggregate bearing adhesive onto a surface, said gun comprising an elongated body having a discharge passage extending thereunto through one end thereof, said body having convergent passages therein which open into the discharge passage and define between them a post, said post having an air discharge passage extending therethrough in axial alignment with the discharge passage, means mounted in the body adjacent the end thereof remote from the discharge passage for selective communication with the convergent passages adjacent the divergent ends thereof, said body having jet passages therein which align axially with the convergent passages adjacent the divergent ends thereof for directing jets of aerating and homogenizing air into plasticized adhesive 6 material passing through the convergent passages, said body having a bore extending transversely therethrough above the divergent ends of the convergent passages and a duct opening into the bore and communicating with the air discharge passage, said body also having ducts therein which open into the bore and communicate with the air discharge passage in the post for conveying air to and against the aerated and homogenized adhesive to project said adhesive through the discharge passage and against a surface to be coated, and said body having an air inlet port opening through its top and communicating with the bore.
3; The structure defined in claim 2, a tubular turning plug mounted in the bore to rotate about the longitudinal axis thereof, and said turning plug having ports extending therethrough for simultaneously establishing communication between the air inlet port and the air ducts.
