SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,548, dated. October 24, 1882.

To all lt/l0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER: STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Ouspidors and Similar Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being bad to the ac companyiug drawings, which form part ofthis specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views of the lower portion of improved cuspidor. Fig. 3 is a side view of complete cuspidor.
My invention has for its object to provide new and useful means and a new method of fastening the foot of a cuspidor or other similar vessel made of sheet metal to the body or breast thereof.
Heretofore the foot and breast or body of a cuspidor have been united by soldering. This method is tedious and very lrequently produces an ungainly joint, as also the adherence of parts or drops of solder to the metal outside of or distant from the joint, which has to be removed before polishing or plating is effected.
My invention aims to dispense with soldering and to produce a union of the foot and body by the formation of a joint by pressure, whereby the metal of the bottom of the breast or body is turned or pressed over a flange on the upper edge of the foot, the parts being thereby tirmly fastened together.

To unite the parts, the bottom of the breast is passed through the opening in the foot, the
parts occupying the position shown in Fig. 1. The foot being duly supported, pressure is now applied to the bottom, so as to cause its side wall, a, to bentl over and form a lap on the flange I) of the foot, thus producing a tight joint between and perfect union of the foot and breast or body.
The improvement, though mainly intended for cuspidors, is applicable to other sheet-metal vessels having a foot and a bottom which is integral with the breast, and which are designed to hold fluids.
1 do not claim bioadly a body of any construction united by a lap-joint to a foot, my invention having reference only to that class of vessels which are designed to hold fluids and which have closed bottoms.
1 am aware that the bottomless body of a coal hod has been united to a bottom and foot struck up in one piece by the joint used herein; but the described construction of my invention permits the body and foot to be each of a single piece of metal, annular and without seam,the foot being a ring and the bodya cup with the bottom integral therewith, said body being thus water-tight.
What 1 claim as my invention is-- 1. The combination of breast or body A, having sunken bottom A, with foot B, having flange b, the wallet of said bottom being lapped over the flange of said foot, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of seamless bodyA, having the depressed portion A integral therewith, with the seamless foot 13, provided with an opening receiving said depressed portion, and a flange, 1), a portion of A being lapped over and pressed against flange I), substantially as described and shown.
