DILATOR FOR CLOGGED TEATS Filed Sept. 3, 1952 q, os S xfGE/VT Patented Jan. 5, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I 2,664,894 DILATOR FOR CLOGGED TEATS Victor Gariepy, Waterloo, Quebec, Canada Application September 3, 1952, Serial No. 307,591
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a manually operable instrument for easing and healing damaged teats of animals giving quick relief and unimpeded milk flow.
My instrument means a radical advance in teat dilator design, made of soft pliable material with a special double-duty cavity that carries the healing salve to the inside of the teat to soothe and heal the sore and acts as an easy-flow milk tube without discomfort to the cow. Being pliable the instrument bends with the teat when the cow lies down, causing no further injury or delay to the healing process. The heat of the teat melts the salve which then runs down to the sore.
My instrument, as it has just been stated, consists in a double cavity-type dilator, that is, an instrument made of a number of integral sections comprising a manipulating knob, a spindle shaft portion, a collar and a medicament carrying section terminated by a pointed pilot end. I will explain later the construction of the double cavity medicament carrying section. Other features will also appear as the description is proceeded with.
In the drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention,
Figure 1 is a side view of the instrument,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the instrument,
Figure 3 is an end view, and
Figure 4 is a cross-section of the instrument taken at 44 of Figure 2 through medicament carrying grooves.
As already stated, the invention consists in an instrument for healing damaged teats of animals and is constituted of the following parts.
The outer end of the instrument is a finger piece or knob 5 for its manipulation, and 6 is a spindle section extending between the knob 5, and the segmentary halves 8 of the instrument body terminated by a pilot end 9.
Numeral 8 designates the medicament carrying section and the particularity of this part of the instrument is that it is made with two grooves 8' one on each side thereof and separated by a thin partition or diaphragm It] clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings.
The medicament is placed in said grooves the outer corners of which are rounded as at numeral I I, this to avoid possible hurting or discomfort of the inside of the teat in manipulating the instrument in its rotation therein. The numeral 9 shows the pilot end of the instrument.
Collar 'l of the instrument is of a smaller diameter than knob 5 and its surface follows a horizontal line and this taken together with the inwardly tapered grooved section allows an easy flow of milk without discomfort to the cow.
This instrument being made of pliable material, it bends with the teat when the cow lies down.
To recapitulate, the instrument consists of a knob section, a spindle section, a collar, a double cavity or grooved section and a pilot section the whole being integral. I may state again that the reason of the grooves is to provide an equal distribution of the remedy from both sides of the instrument.
I claim:
A manually operable dilator for healing damaged teats consisting in an instrument made of a number of distinct and integral sections comprising a manipulating knob, a pointed pilot sec tion, a spindle piece portion, and a collar extending between said spindle piece portion and the pointed pilot section, an inwardly curved medicament carrying section extending between said spindle piece portion and said pilot section, longitudinal grooves extending approximately the full length of said medicament carrying section one on each side thereof and separated by a diaphragm, the outer corners of said grooves being rounded.
