In a typical arrangement the lowermost packing ring rests on the collar at the upper end of the lower body section and the upper ring bears against a collar on the main body section. Any intermediate packing rings are between those engaged with the collars. The lower body section is movable longitudinally of the main body section and as the collars of the body sections approach each other the packing rings between the collars are compressed so that the desired sealing engagement is established between the body and the casing.
Packer releasing means is provided and in the case illustrated involves pullers or lifters between the packing rings other than the one resting on the collar of the lower body section and links operatively connect the lifters and the main body section so that lifting of the main body section relative to the casing and relative to the packing rings set against the wall of the casing results in the lifters being actuated one after the other, with consequent lifting of the packing rings one after the other and not simultaneously.
A casing gripping means is provided, preferably on the lower section of the body, and is shown as involving a wedge depending from the body, and slips operated by the wedge to engage and grip the casing. A sleeve is shiftable on a f depending extension of the wedge and links connect the sleeve and the slips. A control is provided for the gripping means and may include friction members carried by the sleeve and bearing outwardly against the casing, and a bayonet :3.

Fig. l is a view illustrating a packer embodying the present invention, showing it located in a well casing and related to a well tubing extending into the casing. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan section taken as indicated by line 2--2 on Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the structure, being a view taken substantially as indicated by line 55 on Fig. 2. The structure illustrated in the drawings and in which the present invention is incorporated is shown acting in connection with a well casing A and a tubing B in the casing, the tubing being considerably smaller in diameter than the casing so that there is a flow passage between these elements. A tubular body 0 is provided and carries a plurality of packers D. A core E-is carried by the tubing B and extends into the body C Fig. 4 is an enand is cooperatively related thereto, these elements being related for limited movement relative to each other longitudinally of the structure. A packer releasing means F is provided whereby the structure can be operated so that the packers D are released separately, or individually one after the other. A casing gripping means G is provided and can be set or actuated to check downward movement of a section of the body. A control means H is provided for the gripping means G. A flow control or valve means J is provided controlling flow through the structure past or through the packers, and the structure includes various other details and features as will be hereinafter described.
The body C is an elongate tubular structure and in the case illustrated it is a sectional structure involving a main or upper section II.) and a clamp or lower section II. The upper section of the body is a tubular element of substantial length passing the core E so that there is an annular fluid passage l2 between these elements. The upper section [0 of the body is considerably smaller than the well casing so that there is an annular space It between the casing and body section it, and it is this space that is sealed off or packed by means of the packers D, as will be hereinafter described.
In the particular construction illustrated the body section [0 is related to the core E so that limited movement can occur between these elements longitudinally of the structure. The body section if: is shown as being shorter than the core E and it is confined between the coupler l5 by which the core is connected to the tubing B and an upwardly facing shoulder l6 that occurs on the core E well below the coupler I5, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
When the core is in what may be considered a down position relative to the body section lo the coupler I5 is, in eiiect, engaged with the upper end of body section in, the engagement being through the flow control J, as hereinafter described. When the structure is operated to release the packers D the shoulder l 6 of the core is engaged with the lower end of body section ID, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
The engagement between the body section In and the core obtained through the shoulder I6 of the core is preferably such as to provide for passage of fluid through the passageway l2, while the core is engaged with the body section l0, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In the case illustrated the shoulder I6 is an annular shoulder facing upwardly and occurs between the upper portion 25 of the core and the enlarged depending lower portion 2| of the core. A plurality of inwardly projecting lugs 22 occur at the lower end of body section i0 and it is these spaced lugs that engage the shoulder 56, providing the desired engagement between the core and the body section Hi. The lower ends of the lugs 22 engage the shoulder Iii while the inner edges of the lugs engage the exterior of the portion 20 of the core and maintain the core centrally in the body section l0.
The clamp or lower section II of the body is a tubular element somewhat larger than the upper section it and its upper end portion is telescopically related to the lower ortion of body section it], as shown in the drawings. A collar 23 on the upper end of body section II slidably fits on or passes the body section [0 and presents a downwardly facing shoulder 24 that opposes and cooperates with an upwardly facing shoulder 25 on an enlargement 26 at the lowerend of body'section l0.
Theparts just described are related and cooperate so that after a limitedupward movement of the body section ill relative to the section H the shoulders 24 and 25 engage and further'upward movement of body section II] will cause the section I l to be carried with it.
The packers D are carried by or onthe body section ill and in accordance with the present invention there are several packers-D and they aresuch as to be, in effect, packers related to operate simultaneously and in like manner to seal between the body section H) and the interior of casing A. In a typical situation each packer D may include one or more rings 39 of packing material and in the case illustrated each packer D includes two rings of packing material slidably engaging the exterior of the body section iii-and proportioned so that when in normal position or unactuated their outer peripheries 3! are spaced from the interior of casing A.
In accordance with the present invention the number of packers D incorporated in this structure may be varied widely. In the particular case illustrated there is what may be termed a lower packer D which engages and rests upon the upper end of the lower body section II, there is an upper packer D which engages a collar 35 on the body section it, and there is an intermediate packer located between the upper and lower packers. The lower packer D rests on the upper end of collar 28 that occurs at the upper end of body section H. The collar 35 provided on the body section it! is located on body section I!) well above the collar 23 and itv faces downwardly so that the upper packer D engages it, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings. The intermediate packer D occurs on the body I ll between the upper and ,lower packers and is free of engagement with collars such as those above described.
The several packers D are preferably formed of one or more rings of conformable or expandible packing material such as rubber or rubber-like material, and the packers occur on or are related to the body so that when the body sections Hi and il are moved relative to each other to advance the collar 23 toward the collar 35, the several packers are compressed, with consequent expansion of the packer rings so that they seal tight on the exterior of the body section and in or against the interior of the well casing-A.
In accordance with the present invention the packer releasing means F is provided and is such that when the body is operated from a position such as I have just described, as by moving the body sections relative to each other so that the collars 23 and 35 move apart, the packers D are successively released or are released one after the ther. In the form illustrated the means F includes ring pullers or lifters 4H in connection with the packers and links 4| relating the lifters 40 with the body C.
In the case illustrated a lifter 48 is provided in connection with each of the packers D, except the lower packer which is engaged with collar 23,,and each lifter so is in the form of a simple annular element slidably engaged around body section I!) and located immediately below the lowermost ring-of the packer with which it is related. As
will be observed from the drawings, the upper,
packer D and the intermediate packer D each ha a lifter 4e engaged under it,.this.relationship of parts beingbest illustrated" it Fig.2 01' the drawings.

The several links are circumferentially spaced around the body and are preferablytsimple elongate bars or rods having their. lower ends. anchored to the lifter while their upper ends are slidably engaged in openings 43:.extending through the collar 35 longitudinally of the structure. In the caseof the links 4| related to thelifter for upper packer D; the links 4| extend upwardly through'openings 44 in the ring of that. packer; In th'ecase'of the links 4| related to the intermediate packer the links extendupwardly through. the rings of that packer, through openings 45 :in the lifter'of the upper packer, through openings 44in therin'gs of the upper packer and to the collar'35.l
The links 4| related. to. the lifters 40 are of such length that when the several packers D are set, as shown in .Fig. 5, the heads 46 on the links related to one packer; for instance the upper .packer, are spaced a short distance above the collar 45, whereas the heads on'the links related to the intermediate packer arespaced a substantial distance abovethe collar 35; As a result of this relationship of parts when the structure is operated so that body section l0 moves up relative to section I to effect release of the packers D, collars 35 and 23-mov'c apart, the heads 46 on the links related to'the uppermost packer D'are engaged byth'e 'collar 35 with consequent force being applied to the rings of the uppermost packer causing freeing ofthat packer from the wallet the well casing, so that it will slide therein. Continued upward movement of section Hlwill result 'in collar :35 engaging the heads of i the links related to the intermediate packer, with theresult that the-inter- .mediate packer is, freed so that: it willslide' in the casing.
In. accordance with: the present invention the r parts. are so related that following freeing of \a casing gripping means G and this is shown as involving a wedge member 50 carried by and depending from bodysection l0; Slipsorrcasing grippers 5| are engaged with wedge faces 52 and are operated by means of a sleeve 53 through links 54. The sleeve 53 is slidable. on thelower portion 2| of the core E.
The control means H for the gripping means G is shown as a conventionalv control involving a plurality of members frictionallyengaged with the casing A andv related to the sleeve 53; The members 69 are shown as outwardly bowed leaf springs anchored to the lower end of sleeve 80 by. fasteners 6| The upper ends of the springs are connected to a ring 64 that slides on the sleeve. A bayonet slot control involving a. pin 65 operating in an L-shaped slot 66' in the sleeve 53 provides a releasable. look so that themeansH can be set with the sleeve inia down position on the core to facilitatelowering of .thestructure into the casing. When it is desiredto set the packer the pin... 65 :..opemted, i -,-it 3 1 to enter the vertical part thereof whereupon lowering of the body causes the wedge ill on the body to enter between the slips so the slips are wedged into engagement with the casing. Through this operation the gripping means G forms a fixed abutment or stop in the casing. With the casing section II thus stopped collar 23 on section U will not move down and therefore further downward movement of the body section I0 will cause collar 35 thereon to compress the several packers, as hereinabove described.
The flow control means J incorporated in the particular construction illustrated involves a seat on or at the upper end of body section III and a valve element H on the core or on the coupling i5 connecting the core with the tubing. In the particular case illustrated the seat I0 is an annular member threaded onto the upper end of body section l0 and the valve H is an annular valve element provided at the lower end of collar I5 and surrounding the core E where the core connects to the collar.
The parts just described are such that when the tubing B is moved downwardly after the means G has been engaged, the flow control J will operate to stop flow through the body due to the valve H engaging the seat 10. Further downward movement of the tubing B results in depression of the body section [0 relative to section II with consequent movement of collar toward collar 23, which results in compression of the packers.
The mechanism is such that so long as the tubing B bears downwardly on the body section ,IO the packers are maintained under compression and in consequent sealing engagement between the body section l0 and the casing A. When the structure is to be released initial upward movement of the tubing B opens the flow control J so that fluid is free to flow through the body I0 even though the packers D are still in sealing engagement between the body section It and the casing A. After a predetermined upward movement of the core E has occurred relative to body section [0 the shoulder 16 of the core engages the lower end of body section I0 so that further upward movement of the core due to lifting of the tube will result in the successive release of the packers, as hereinabove described.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention, I do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art and fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A well packer including, a body having sections with spaced opposed parts, one section being an elongate tubular main section and the other section being an annular clamp section surrounding and shiftable longitudinally relative to the main section, a plurality of separable packers in a series extending lengthwise of the main section and between said parts and each slidably carried on the main section and adapted to be compressed between said parts upon the sections being moved in one direction relative to each other, and a member connected to each packer and slidably connected to the main section for limited movement relative thereto, the members being of different lengths and adapted to successivelypick up the .packers for movement with the main section upon relative movement between the sections in the opposite direction.
2. A well packer including, a central tubular body having a main elongate tubular section and an annular clamp section surrounding and shiftable relative to the main section, the sections having spaced collar portions thereon, a plurality of separable packers slidable on the main section in a series lengthwise of the main section and between the collars, the packers being adapted to be compressed by and between the collars upon the sections being moved in one direction relative to each other, and a member connected to each packer and slidably connected to the main section for limited movement relative thereto, the members being of difierent lengths and adapted to successively pick up packers for movement with the main section upon relative movement between the sections in the opposite direction.
3. A well packer including, an elongate central body having a main tubular section and an annular clamp section slidable on the main section and adapted to shift relative to the main section lengthwise-thereof, the sections having collar portions opposed to each other, a plurality of separable packers slidably carried by the main section between the collar portions and adapted to be compressed by and between the collar portions upon the sections being moved in one direction relative to each other, and members ex tending longitudinally of the body and each slackly linked to the collar of the main section and each engaged With a packer, the said members being of different lengths and adapted to successively pick up packers for movement with the main section upon relative movement between the sections in the opposite direction.
4. A well packer including, an elongate central body having a main tubular section and an annular clamp section slidable on the main section and adapted to shift relative to the main section having collar portions opposed to each other, a plurality of separable annular packers slidably carried on the main section between the collars and adapted to be compressed by and between the collars upon the sections being moved in one direction relative to each other, and members connected to the collar of the main section and each engaged with a packer, said members being adapted to successively pick up packers for movement with the main section upon relative movement between the sections in the opposite direction, each packer including a ring of packing around the main body section and each member including an annular part engaged around the main body section and engaging the ring of a packer and a part extending longitudinal of the body and engaged with the main section, the said parts of said members being of different lengths.
5. A well packer including, a body having an elongate central main section and an annular clamp section shiftable lengthwise relative to the main section, each section having a collar thereon, the collars being spaced apart and opposed, a plurality of separable packers slidably carried on the main section between the collars and adapted to be compressed by and between the collars upon the sections being moved in one direction relative to each other, and members of diiferent lengths slackly linked to the main section and each engaged with a packer, said members being adapted to successively pick up packers for movement with the main section upon relative: movement between the sections in the opposite direction, there 'being one; packer-in addition to those engaged by said members and engagedby the collar of the clamp to be picked up thereby.
6. 'A well packer includingan elongate body having an elongate main section with an annular collar fixed thereon, a clamp section surrounding and shiitable longitudinally of the main section andhaving a collar thereon spaced from and opposing the collar of the main section, a plurality of separate annular packers slidable on the main section and arranged in a series between the collars, annular lifters on themain section and spaced apart longitudinally thereof, each lifter being engaged with a packer, and separate members extending longitudinal of the main section and connecting the lifters and the main section for different degrees of relative movement lengthwise of the main section whereby the packers engaged by the lifters are successively picked up to move with the'main section when the sections are moved relative to each other so the collars move apart.
'7. A well packer including, a body having an elongate main section with a collar thereon, an annular clamp section surrounding the main section below said collar and shiftable longitudinally of the main section, the'clamp section having a collar thereon, means limiting relative movement between the body sections lengthwise of the main section, a plurality of separate annular packers slidable on the main section and located between the collars, annular lifters on the main section and each engaged with a packer, and members of difierent lengths extending longitudinal of the main section and connecting the lifters and the main section whereby the packers engaged by the lifters are successively picked up to move with the main section when the sections are moved relative to each other so the collars move apart, there being one packer in addition to those engaged by the lifters and being engaged by the collar of the clamp section.
8. A well packer including, a central body having a main elongate section with a collar fixed thereon, an annular clamp section shiftable longitudinally on the main section below the collar of the main section and having a collar thereon, a plurality of separate annular packers slidable on the main section and located between the collars, annular lifters on the main section and each engaged with a packer, and links secured to the lifters and slidably coupled to the collar of the main section connecting the lifters and the main section, the links related to the several packers being of different lengths; whereby the packers engaged by the lifters aresuccessively picked up to move with the main section when the sections are moved relative to each other so the collars move apart.

A well packer including, a vertical elongate body having a main section with a collar thereon, a clamp section shiftable longitudinally of the main section and having a collar thereon, the sections being coupled for limited movement relative to each other longitudinally of the body, a plurality of separable annular packers in a vertical series on the main section and between the collars, annular members on the main section movable lengthwise thereof and each engaged beneath a packer, and links of different lengths connected to said members and extending upwardly therefrom to the collar of the main section whereby the packers engaged by said members are successively picked up and moved with the main section upon the main section being elevated relative to the clamp section, the links of each member being slidably engaged through each packer located above that member and the links being slidably engaged through the collar of the main section and having heads on their upper ends by which the links are lifted successively as the main section is elevated.
14. A well packer including, a vertical elongate body having a main section with a collar thereon, an annular clamp section surrounding and shiftable longitudinally of the main section and having a collar thereon, the sections being coupled for limited movement relative to each other longitudinally of the body, anchoring means carried by the clamp section, a plurality of separable annular packers in a vertical series on the main section and between the collars and adapted to be compressed thereby, annular members on the main section movable lengthwise thereof and each engaged beneath a packer, and links of difierent lengths connected to said members and extending upwardly therefrom to thecollar of the main section and slidably coupled thereto, the links having heads on their upper ends whereby the packers engaged by said members are successively picked up and moved with the main section upon the main section being elevated relative to the clamp section.
15. A well packer including, a vertical elongate tubular body having a main section with a collar thereon, a clamp section shiftable longitudinally of the main section and having a collar'thereon, the sections being coupled for limited movement relative to each other longitudinally of the body, means adapted to control flow through the body including valve parts cooperatively engaged when the body sections are in a predetermined position relative to each other, one of the valve parts being carried by the main section of the body, a plurality of separable annular packers in a vertical series on the main section and between the collars, annular members on the main section movable lengthwise thereof and each engaged beneath a packer, and links of different lengths connected to said members and extending upwardly therefrom to the collar of the main section whereby the packers engaged by said members are successively picked up and moved with the main section upon the:
main section being elevated relative to the clamp section.
16. A well packer including, a vertical elon-- gate tubular body having a main section with a collar thereon, a clamp section shiftable longitudinally of the main section and having a col-j one of the valve parts being on the main section gaged by said members are successively picked up and moved with the main section upon the main section being elevated relative to the clamp section.
17. A well packer including, a vertical elongate tubular body having a main section with a collar thereon, a clamp section shiftable longitudinally of the main section and having a collar thereon, the sections being coupled for limited movement relative to each other longitudinally of the body, a core extending into the,
body and related thereto for limited movement relative thereto, means controlling flow through the body including valve parts cooperatively engaged when the body sections are in a predetermined position relative to each other, one of the valve parts being on the main section and the other on the core, a plurality of separable annular packers in a vertical series on the main section and between the collars, annular members on the main section movable lengthwise thereof and each engaged beneath a packer, and links of different lengths connected to said members and extending upwardly therefrom to the collar of the main section whereby the packers engaged by said members are successively picked up and moved with the main section upon the main section being elevated relative to the clamp section.
