SLIDING BOX COVER Filed July 10, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 AT'I'D RN EYS Patented Dec. 22, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT 2,663,457 "SLIDING BOX oo'viin John E. Shaffer, Brandon-Fm. Another object of the invention is to provide "a closure member for boxes'or cartons containing such things'as flour, soap powder, or other materials, the closure member including a transparent window or lid which' permits the user to observe the contents of the carton,'the' closure member serving to prevent'moisture, dust, or other foreign material from contaminating the coni tents of the'car-ton, the closure member also serving to prevent Wasting or spilling of the material in thecarton.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure member or box which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the closure member of the-present invention; 7 Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 52- 2 of Figure 1 7 Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, butwith the transparent lid or window in open position;
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line '5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6- is a top plan view of the closure member, with parts broken away and in section, and showing the lid in open position.
Referrin in detail to the drawings, the numeral I0 designates a conventional box or carton or receptacle which may contain flour, cereal, soap powder, or other materials. The present invention is directed to a closure member which is adapted to be positioned or placed over the top of the carton I!) after the cover has been out on or otherwise removed from the carton. The carton I0 is conventional and includes a bottom wall I l, spaced parallel side walls 12 and I3, and end walls 14 and I5.

This means includes a small socket 21 which is arranged in the under surface of the top wall I6, Figure 3, and the socket 21 is adapted to frictionally receive therein a protuberance 28 which is arranged on the lid 25. Thus, when the lid 25 is in its closed position, as shown in Figure 2, the protuberance 28 is seated in the socket 21, but by exerting a slight pressure on the lid 25 by means of the finger-engaging cutout 26, the protuberance 28 can be readily worked loose from the socket 21.
The closure member of the present invention further includes a plurality of spaced spring fingers or prongs 29 which are adapted to enga the side and end walls of the carton In so as to maintain the closure member immobile on the carton after it has been placed thereon.
In use, the top is cut or torn off of the carton or receptacle Iii. Then the closure member of the present invention is placed over the carton H1. With the closure member in position over or on the carton it, it will be seen that the spring fingers 29 engage the walls of the carton to maintain the closure member in its proper position on the carton. Also, the side flanges l8 and i and end flanges 20 and 2| engage the walls of the carton so that the contents of the carton will be maintained free from dust, moisture or other contamination. Normally, the transparent lid,
25 is in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, so that no contamination can enter the inside of the carton. Also, with the transparent lid 25 in the closed position shown in Figures 1 and 2, the user can readily observe the amount of material in the carton, since the lid is of transparent material. To dispense the contents of the carton, or any portion thereof, the user merely places his finger in engagement with the cutout 26 and then slides the lid 25 from the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 to the position shown in Figures 3 and 6, so that the contents of the carton can be dispensed or emptied through the discharge opening I! in the top wall 16. When the lid '25 is in its closed position, the socket 21 and protuberance 28 serve to prevent accidental opening of thelid.
The closure member of the present invention is adapted to cover boxes after the tops have been removed. The boxes may contain flour, cereal, soap powder, and the like. The closure member can be made of plastic or any other suitable material. The closure member is constructed so that the user may cut 011 the original box to and place the closure member of the present invention on the box. The closure member will seal the box tightly, preventing dampness, dust, or other foreign matter from entering the box, thereby providing greater sanitation. Also, the box will be neat and attractive. As the contents of the box are used, the box or carton may be out down so that the closure member of the present invention can he slipped on again, thus saving space in cupboards.
I claim:
