Claims. (01. 37-44) This invention relates to snow plow apparatus and is particularly designed to provide a removable attaclnnent whereby a V-type plow, for example of rugged, reinforced character, may be quickly and easily converted to a so-called oneway plow of equal serviceability and of equal capacity for heavy work, or may here-converted to its V arrangement with like rapidity and convenience.
Snow plows to be operated by a truck or tractor have usually been either of the V-type with a pair of moldboards slanting rearwardly from a more or less central and upright forward edge, or the one-way type with a single moldboard diagonally crossing the roadway. Each type has its special purposes, so that many users have need for both. While some V-plows are of the shovelnose type with a single, straight cutting edge perpendicular to the direction of travel, the present invention especially relates to the shear blade plow, in which the cutting edge has a V-shape and which is generally more efllcient, especially where (as shown in the drawings) the included apex angle between the cutting edges at the road- Way is greater than the corresponding angle at the top of the moldboards. Advantageous shearing addition is also obtained with one-way plows wherein the cutting edge crosses the roadway diagonally.
In general, the heavy and rugged structure required for snow plows used on roads and streets has not been satisfied by prior proposals of hinged rudders or flanges for the apex of a V-plow, nor have other proposed extension structures permitted effective realization of heavy duty sheartype action, such as desired for a one-way plow. A further criterion of a snow plow attachment, especially important under severe weather conditions and the customary emergency of plowing, is ease of connection, i. e. so that the extension can be attached rapidly and without disassembling the main plow.
An important object of this invention is to provide a removable extension structure for a snow plow of the shear-blade V-type, and the combination of a V-plow therewith, satisfying the several criteria of structure and use that are mentioned above. Another specific object is the provision of an extension for a V-type plow, which at least after the original installation of relativly simple fittings, is removably attached by means located wholly on the outside of the plow proper, and which thus for removal or replacement requires no access to the rear or underside of the plow moldboards. 4
Further objects are; to provide improved equipment for converting a V-type into a oneway plow with an efiicient moldboard structure, sloping and curved throughout its length in an optimum manner for clearing snow to one side of a roadway; more specifically, to provide such structure constituting a one-way plow having a cutting edge arrangement of the concededly more eflicient shear-type, having a special shear angle relationship of peculiar advantage for snow removal with the converted structure; and the provision of a novel moldboard extension having a limited freedom of motion to facilitate following the contour of the road. An additional object is to provide a moldboard extension or adapter, of the character stated, which may be readily designed to fitany of various species of V-type plows, and yet in every case constitute an exceptionally simple but rugged and well braced arrangement.
To these and other ends certain presently preferred structures are set forth, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings and the following description, which will therefore serve to illustrate the principles and features of the invention. Referring to the drawings:

Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, a central V-type plow is shown having a pair of moldboards l0, l I, appropriately fashioned of steel or other heavy sheet materialand meeting at a forward apex line l 2. 'Each of the moldboards of the illus lower forward extremity, the edge plates [4 and I5 being reinforced by co-extensive angle members underneath the moldboard sheet itself. These angle members are not shown, but their arrangement may be similar to that illustrated in Fig. 6 and hereinbelow described. The moldboards slope rearwardly and upwardly from the cutting edges and each has a concave configuration in a vertical direction, conforming appropriately with the concavity illustrated by the apex line 12. Behind the moldboards, the entire structure is supported and securely held together by a framework generally designated 18, including supporting plates [9 of appropriate contour to engage central portions of the moldboards. It will be understood that the described structure of the plow and its supporting framework, the latter being employed for attachment of the equipment to a truck or tractor, are not per se a part of the present invention, so that precise delineation of the individual elements is unnecessary herein.
The illustrated plow, having both .its moldboards and cutting edges in V relation, is designed to clear snow from a road surface by rapidly elevating the snow, moving it along the moldboards, and dispersing it at both sides of the road.
In accordance with the present invention the plow extension structure comprises a supplemental moldboard 2.0 and a brace member 22 extending between the forward end of the supplemental element and the landside of the plow. The moldboard is conveniently made of sheet steel or the like and has a vertically concave and somewhat rearwardly sloping configuration, in conformity with the contour of the plow moldboard ID with which the extension cooperates to provide a one-way plow.
M re pa t cularly, the upstandin rear edge of the moldboard 2!] is curved to fit the apex edge 12 and a pair of spaced lugs or clips 23, 24 are provided to attach the moldboard to a projecting flange which structurally characterizes the edge [2, formed at the meeting ends of the moldboards II), II. Ea h of the clips 23, 24 has tWO holes for bolts respectively securing it to the moldboard 2.9 and the described flange, either or both clips being appropriately bent, as necessary, to accommodate the angular relation of the attached parts. Clip 23 is fastened to the supplemental moldboard 20 by the bolt 23a, and clip 24 by the bolt 24a; the clips 23 and 2.4 are correspondingly conneced to the plow flange 25 by the bolts 23b, 241), respectively.
Ahead of the plow moldboard H, the moldboard 20 extends diagonally forward from the apex I! to a leading edge 26 which is at least approximately in line with the landside 28 .of the plow, the moldboard H being thus effectively screened. Over and along its bottom edge portion the moldboard 20 carries a cutting edge plate 30, which is reinforced by a coextensive angle member 3| beneath the moldboard sheet, the entire assembly being bolted together, all as shown in Fig. .6. Near its head end, the edge plate 30 has secured thereon a plate portion 32 of a nose plate structure which integrally includes a forwardly extending part providing a nose shoe 34, and the forward end of the brace member 22 is firmly bolted or riveted (along an upstanding line) to a portion, behind the nose shoe, of the forwardly extending part of the nose plate structure, as illustrated at 35, 36 in Fig. 5.
The brace 22 is conveniently made of heavy sheet metal, in an elongated triangular form, i. e. with its upper edge tapering downwardly from the forward edge of the moldbcard 20, the brace having its longer edges appropriately flanged, e. g. as shown at 37, for greater strength. The outer (or landside) end of the plow edge plate [5 carries an adapter bracket 38 having an upstanding ear 39 to which the rear end of the brace 22 is attached by a pair of bolts 68, ii (Figs. 4 and 5). A similar adapter bracket 43 with an upstanding ear Mi is mounted at the nose angle end of the edge plate l5, and a lug 45, welded to the upper web of the angle member 3!, so as to extend rearwardly at an appropriate angle, is fastened to the car as by a single bolt 41.
It will now be seen that the extension structure itself comprises the moldboard 25, having its attached edge plate and reinforcing angle 3|, and the associated brace 22, the brace being securely and rigidly fastened to the leading end of the moldboard structure, by means of the angularly related portions of the IlOse plate element 32-34. This self-supporting assembly is in turn effectively mounted on the plow proper, simply by means of bolts at a few readily accessible localities, viz. the upstanding ears 3'9, l i (which may be bolted or riveted to the edge plate i5) and the clips 23, 2 3 at the nose flange of th plow.
In accordance with a presently preferred feature of the invention the extension not only provides a one-way plow of full width, i. e., having the same width perpendicular to the road as the original V-type plow (the brace 22 lying in the same line, along the side of the roadway, as the landside element 28 of the plow), but the arrangement also provides a sharper angle of shear for the cutting edge 35 than that of the adjacent and exposed cutting edge i l of the original plow. Since the moldboard extension 20 has a slope and concave curvature to cooperate with the plow moldboard it, the relatively sharper angle of the cutting edge is of peculiar advantage, in that it induces the snow to move more readily along the moldboard extension and thence on to and along the exposed moldboard of the plow itself. In this way the removal of snow is greatly expedited and yet at the same time the extension need not have such height as would be cumbersome or inconvenient to lit with the v-type plow when it has a relatively short apex edge.
Another useful feature of the invention resides in structure providing limited vertical motion of the forward end of the extension so that it may follow the contour of the roadway with satisfactory precision despite the fact that the shielded or unused edge l5 of th V-plow is also disposed close to the roadway by reason of its basic structure. While other instrumentalities may be employed, the drawings illustrate one arrangement including a somewhat elongated slot 52 in the brace 22, to be traversed by the upper bolt 4| of the pair by which the brace is attached to the ear 39, and like slots are provided in the clips 23, 24 at 53, 54 respectively, for receiving the bolts '23b, 24?), which connect the clips to the flange as described above. In cooperation the bolts in the several slots 52, 53 and 54, are set and locked with freedom for the slots to slide relative thereto, and the bottom bolts 4i and 4B are correspondingly locked with sufiicient freedom so that the extension assembly, taking advantage of'the several slots at the upper connections, can swing (through a small angle) about the pivot line defined by the bottom bolts. In consequence the extension may thus have a ment of its forward end, so that its structure resting on the ground, including the cutting edge 30 short moldboard 62 meeting at the apex line 63.
In accordance with the present invention a plow extension is provided, comprising a moldboard section 65, and a brace 66, the two being secured together at their forward ends and removably attached at their rear ends to the plow 60, all by means conveniently similar to those illustrated in Figs. 2 to 6 and therefore only partially shown here.- Thus such connections include clips 68 fastening the moldboard to the center flange 69 of the plow, and in addition to a central ear (not shown) like the element 44 of Fig. 2, there is an ear Ill fastening the end of the brace 66 to the cutting edge plate H of the short moldboard 62, in front of which the extension is disposed. As in Figs. 2 to 6, the extension has a cutting edge plate or blade 13 for cooperation with the edge plate or blade M of the plow board 61, the plate 13 and adjoining portion of the moldboard 65 having a sharper angle of shear than the plate 14 and corresponding portion of the moldboard 6|, with special advantage as explained hereinabove. Likewise the moldboard G5 is sloped and concavely curved to conform with the moldboard 6 I, thereby providing a satisfactory one-way plow having the full roadway width of the original ofi-set V-plow.
The specific V-plow shown in Figs. 7 and 8 has relatively high moldboards and thus may be adapted for exceptionally heavy duty, the extension structure being readily designed, as shown, to conform in shape and size. Indeed the present extension structure is peculiarlysuited for plows of an ofi-set V configuration; when made to fit ahead of the shorter leg of the V, it constitutes a relatively small device of convenient weight, which is correspondingly easy to apply and remove. Although if desired for better conformity with the roadway as the plow is pushed along, the forward end of the extension 65-66 may have a freedom of vertical motion about a rear pivot line by providing means such as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the extension in Figs. 7 and 8 is shown simply as having a fixed attachment to the plow.
The illustrated structures afford particularly simple and satisfactory means whereby any V- type street or road plow may be readily converted to a one-way plow or as easily reconverted to its original condition. Attachment is effected with a few simple bolts at readily accessible locations; there is no need to get behind or under the plow or to disturb its structure or actual mounting on a truck or other vehicle. In fact it is an important advantage of the invention that the mounting arrangements (not shown) ordinarily employed for supporting V-plows at th front of trucks or tractors serve equally well without any change whatever to support such a plow in combination with an adapter of the present invention, reference being made both to the means securing the plow in working position and also to such further means as is usually provided, for lifting the plow (and thus with it the present adapter) to an elevated, non-working position, e. g. for rapid transportation.

What is claimed is:
1. In snow plow apparatus, the combination, with a V-type snow plow that has a pair of upwardly sloping moldboards joined in V-relation along a fordward upwardly sloping apex line and having bottom cutting edges in V-relation, of a moldboard element having an upwardly sloping configuration to conform with one of said moldboards and having a rear sloping end edge for conformity with said apex line, said moldboard element extending from said apex line diagonally forward of the other of said moldboard-s and constituting with said one moldboard a one-way plow, said moldboard element having a bottom cutting edge which extends diagonally forward from the apex of the plow bottom cutting edges, bracing structure rigidly secured to the moldboard element at a locality substantially spaced from its aforesaid rear end edge, said bracing structure extending rearwardly from the moldboard element to said other moldboard to a locality of the latter substantially spaced from said apex line, and means pivotally connecting the rear ends of said moldboard element and bracing structure to the V-type plow for limited rocking movement of said element and structure as a unit about a horizontal axis.
2. Apparatus as described in claim 1, said means comprisnig slotted parts vertically spaced alon the rear end edge of the moldboard element and apex line and connected thereto.
3. Snow plow apparatus as described in claim 2, wherein the bracing structure is disposed to extend from the forward end of the moldboard element to the rear end of the bottom cutting edge of said other moldboard, said means comprising attaching ears projecting from said lastmentioned bottom cutting edge at the rear ends of the moldboard element and bracing structure.

In combination with a V-type snow plow that has a pair of sloping moldboards joined in V-relation at a forward upstanding sloping apex line and having respective bottom cutting edges correspondingly disposed in V-relation and laterally disposed outer edges, a rigid unitary extension comprising a moldboard element having a sloping configuration conforming with one of said moldboards to constitute therewith a one- Way plow, said moldboard element having a rear end edge shaped and disposed in conforming juxtaposition with said apex line and having a forward end edge disposed diagonally forward of said rear edge, said forward end edge occupying a position substantially in line with the outer end edge of the other moldboard directly behind it, and an upright brace plate having a forward upright edge of substantial vertical extent rigidly connected to the aforesaid forward end edge of the said moldboard element, said brace plate extending rearwardly to the outer bottom corner formed by the outer end edge and bottom cutting edge of the moldboard directly behind the moldboard element, said moldboard element having means along its rear end edge there attaching the element to the pair of moldboards at their apex line and said brace plate having means at its rear end there attaching said brace plate to the aforesaid bottom corner of the said other moldboard.
