Description

Dec. 22, 1953 J. T. HELLMANN SAFETY RAZOR Filed Feb. 2, 1951 Jay ZHeZ/marm mwmmmmwmwmmwmm m mm ATTD RN EYS Patented Dec. 22, 1953 UNITED STATE OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety razor, and more particularly to a safety razor having a novel type of razor blade support.
The object of the invention is to provide a safety razor which is constructed so that the user can tell which side of the blade has been previously used, there being windows for enabling a person to observe advertising matter that may be arranged on the razor blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety razor which includes a handle, a base, and a clamping plate detachably connected to the handle and base, the razor blade adapted to be positioned between the base and clamping plate, there being longitudinally extending shoulders or ridges arranged on the base for providing the proper flexing for the blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety razor which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l is an end elevational View of the safety razor, constructed according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the safety razor constructed according to the present invention;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away and in section;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the safety razor in assembled position;
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the base;
Figure 6 is a plan view of the clamping plate.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a safety razor which includes a cylindrical handle Iii that may be fabricated of any suitable material, and the handle It may be hollow, as at H, so as to reduce the weight thereof. The exterior surface of the handle I may be knurled, as at 2, so as to facilitate the gripping thereof, and extending through the handle I 0 is a bore 53, Figure 3. The inner portion of the bore I3 is threaded, as at I l.
Arranged transversely with respect to the end of the handle I0 is a base I5. The base I is provided with an opening I6 which registers with the bore I3. The base l5 includes a central I raised portion [1, and arranged on each side of 2 edged razor blade I9 is arranged contiguous to the base l5, and the pointed shoulders l8 insure that the blade It will be properly flexed.
Extending through the bore I3 is a cylindrical stem 28. The stem 29 includes a threaded end 2! which engages the threaded portion M of the bore l3, and the other end of the stem is threaded exteriorly, as at 22. The threaded end 22 is arranged in threaded engagement with an interiorly threaded sleeve 23 which is formed integrally with or secured to the clamping plate 2G.
The clamping plate 24 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel slots 25 which define windows whereby a person will be able to readily observe advertising matter that may be arranged on the razor blade I9.
The clamping plate 24 is further provided with a pair of spaced, curved ribs 26 and 21. It will be seen that the ribs 26 and 21 are of different size, and since these ribs 26 and 21 are of diiierent' sizes, the user of the razor blade will be able to determine which cutting edge of the razor blade 19 has previously been used. Thus, if the user used the cutting edge of the razor blade which was adjacent to the large rib 2?, then on the next shave the user would remember to use the opposite cutting edge which is adjacent to the other rib 26.
From the foregoing it is apparent that a safety razor has been provided wherein a person will be able to observe advertising matter which may be arranged on the razor blade I9. Thus, the user can look through the windows 25 and observe any advertising matter on the razor blade I9. Also, the provision of the rolled ribs 26 and 21 enable the user to ascertain which side of the razor blade has already been used.
Further, it will be seen that one cutting edge of the razor blade i9 projects further beyond the clamping plate 24 than the other cutting edge, so that the user will be able to use one side of the razor for obtaining a close shave, while he will be able to use the other side for obtaining a smooth shave. Also, the curvature in the ribs 26 and 2'! permits the skin to be pushed onto the cutting edge of the razor blade so that a smoother and more efficient shave will be provided. Also, the slots 25 provide flexibility to the clamping plate, so that a smoother shave will be accomplished. Further, the clamping platez i may be made of spring steel, so as to give it greater flexibility.
What is claimed is:
1. In a safety razor, a handle, a base arranged adjacent said handle, there being a longitudinally extending bore arranged in said handle, said base being provided with an opening for registering with the bore in said handle, a cylindrical stem projecting into said bore and detachably ccn eoted to said handle, and a guard plate having a sleeve detachably connected to the other end of said stem, said plate and base adapted to hold therebetween a razor blade, there being windows arranged in said plate for observing the razor blade, and spaced, parallel pointed shoulders projecting from said base for supporting the razor blade, said clamping plate being provided with curved ribs of different sizes, the free edges of said ribs being positioned inwardly of said shoulders. said sleeve maintaining the central portion of said plate spaced away from said base.
2. In a safety razor, a handle provided with a longitudinally extending bore, a portion of said bore being interiorly threaded, a base arranged adjacent one end of said handle and provided with an opening for registering with said bore, a cylindrical stern having its opposite ends threaded and projecting into said bore and engaging the threaded portion therein, the central portion of said base being raised, a pair of spaced, parallel pointed shoulders extending from said base, a clamping plate provided with a threaded sleeve engaging the outer end of said stem, said 4 plate and base adapted to clamp therebetween a razor blade, there being a pair of slots in said plate defining windows, the opposite edges of said plate being shaped to provide rolled ribs of dif- 5 ferent sizes, the free edges of said ribs being positioned inwardly of said shoulders, said sleeve maintaining the central portion of said plate spaced away from said base.
