2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to beds and bedding. and
has particular reference to a novel and improved one-piece combination box spring and mattress.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a novel combination of an innerspring mattress and box spring, wherein these components of the unit are so constructed and arranged with respect to each other that they require substantially less ticking, filling, cord and padding than required by conventional mattress and spring constructions, yet the combination unit nevertheless provides comfort and wearing qualities superior to those afforded by beds of conventional construction.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved spring and mattress combination for a bed, wherein the mattress and spring are of neater appearance than those heretofore used, yet at the same time are so arranged that they may be more conveniently aired and more easily kept clean.
These objects are accomplished, according to the present teaching, by providing a combination box spring and innerspring mattress constructed as a single integral unit, so that the box spring and the mattress are securely held to each other in fixed relative positions, yet are separated by a semi-permanent insulation member such as a sisal pad, so that the springs of the mattress and spring unit may function independently to give the greatest resiliency and comfort to the unit.
In the preferred form of the invention, the combination box spring and. mattress unit is provided with a detachable cover in the nature of a thin, quilted pad closely fitted to the mattress and 2 Q wardly toa semi-permanent insulation member such as the sisal pad H. The springs I5 may be secured to each other and to the members I 6 and l'! by any conventional means such as the tie having ties to hold it in position thereon, but provided with a zipper closure at one corner to facilitate removal of the pad when required.
The present preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combination box spring and mattress construction with the detachable pad covering in place; and
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view through the combination unit.
The unit comprises, in general, a lower or box spring portion generally designated as I0, together with an upper mattress portion H over which the detachable cover I2 is fitted. The box spring unit I0 is arranged to rest directly on the frame members I3 of the bed, which may have legs I4 of any conventional type. The box spring unit includes a multiplicity of helical coil springs I5 which rest on cross supports I 6 and extend upcords, metal clips or wire indicated at 34, ordinarily used for the purpose. The underside of the unit is closed bya dust cloth I8, and a similar' cloth or ticking I9 is extended downwardly from the edges of the-insulation member I! to close the sides of the box spring unit and give it a neat, clean and finished appearance.
The mattress unit, generally designated as H, includes a multiplicity of coil springs 2| extending upwardly from the sisal insulation member I! to an underlayer'22 of ticking on the top pad 23 of the mattress; r This top pad may be tufted in the usual manner by tie cords 24 extending from the ticking 22 up through the top fabric 25 of the mattress. In the form of the mattress shown, the springs 2I are equally spaced and positioned'di'rectly above the springs I5 of the box spring unit, but it will be understood that it is not necessary that this be' done since the springs are physically separated by the sisal pad I1, so that each set of springs functions independently of the other. Thus, if'desired, the innerspring mattress'unit may be provided with a larger number ofrela'tively smaller springs according to the usual practice in the bedding arts. In any event, the springs 2I of the box spring unit are held together and secured to the other parts of the mattress in any conventional way, as by the tie cords, wires or fabric pockets conventionally employed. The top pad 23 of the mattress extends downwardly in a skirt portion 26 and is covered at its edges by an outer fabric layer 21, the lower end of which is joined to the upper edge of the fabric I9 to completely close the outer edges'of the unit so that it will present a clean, attractive and unitary appearance.
The mattress unit is covered bya detachable pad covering28 which extends over the entire area of themattressand has downwardly depending side portions 29 at its marginal edges. As illustrated, these side portions or skirts extend downwardly to a point just below the lower edge of the mattress fabric 21 and are provided with tie cords 30 and small coil springs 3| securing them to anchor tabs 32 on the lower edge of the box spring unit. The skirt 29 may also be provided with a zipper closure 33 at one corner (Figure 2). The pad covering 28 is preferably provided with a water repellent layer on its bottom side and, if desired, may have elastic sections I 3 at the corners so that it will fit the mattress snugly and neatly, yet may be removed with ease.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the applicant, by the present teachings, has provided a novel and improved bedding'unit so designed as to provide comfort and wearing qualities equal or superior to those afforded by conventional bedding constructions, yet accomplishing this important object with a construction requiring less ticking, ipaddingrand cordage. Thenentire bed is of neat; unitary appearance; and since-the parts are all firmly secured to each other, there is no possibility for relative shifting of the spring? and mattress as occurs with prior types of spring and mattress constructionsfil The =utilit'y cf the coil springs secured thereto and extending upinvention is still further increased by. the use of the detachable, pad covering whichp rotects the pads the tufted top surface of the mattress so that the presence of the tufts will not be detected. In" addition to this; it w'ill'he=seenthat the detachable pad covering provides a place under the edges of the pad covering skirt in whichto tucksheets andbed coverspso that' the bed-"inay be made up wi-th a heater" and m'ore trim'app'ear ance than-by conventional"bedding-methods; 'At the same time; the detachable-nature of the -pad covering facilitates removalas re'quired so that both the pad *covering and the combinationspring and mattress unit may be easily cleaned aired" and renovatedi Having thus described my invention; what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent isz':
