This invention relates to a pump attachment for use with blowers or the like, in air conditioning systems, and more particularly pertains to a novel means for filtering the fluid being pumped and anchoring the inlet conduit of the pump in a fiuid reservoir.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a fiuid pump attachment that may be efiicaciously attached to blowers or the like of conventional air circulation systems.
Another important object of this invention is to filter the fluid entering the pump from the fiuid reservoir in such a manner as to provide a large filtering area, while anchoring the inlet concluit of the pump in the fluid reservoir.
Another important object of this invention is to provide, in accordance with the foregoing object, means for filtering the fluid entering the pump, which will prevent the rotation of a fluid pump housing, thereby avoiding the necessity of additional pump support means,
Still another object of this invention, in conformity with the foregoing objects, is to so connect the pump attachment to a blower that it extends therefrom a minimum unsupported distance.
A meritorious feature of the present invention resides in the filtering member, and its functions of preventing rotation of the pump housing and filtering the fluid entering the pump.
Another important feature of the present invention resides in the means provided for securing the filtering member to the conduit.
A final feature to be specifically enumerated herein resides in the connection between the blower arbor and the pump shaft, which minimizes the unsupported extension of the pump from the blower arbor.
These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the present invention, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of the attachment with parts removed, showing the same attached to a blower with the connection therebetween being shown in sections;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the present invention, showing the same attached to a blower and with the filtering member in operative position in a fluid reservoir;
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the filterin member; and,

Reference is now made more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, and in which the numeral designates generally a conventional blower having an arbor l2 that is suitably journaled in an antifriction bearing assembly l4.
Indicated generally at 16 is a rotary water pump, which conventionally includes a housing 18, packing nut 20, and a shaft 22. The arbor i2 is provided with an axial blind bore 24, which is internally threaded to receive the threaded end 26 of the shaft 22. A compression spring 28 is disposed within the bore 2 3 and resiliently bears against the end of the shaft 22 frictionally looking the shaft 22 to the arbor 52. In the preferred construction, a set screw 30 is provided in the arbor 12 for engaging the shaft 22 to prevent relative rotation between the shaft 22 and the arbor [2.
The pump I6 is provided with an outlet conduit 32 and an inlet conduit 34, the latter being connected to the pump housing It by a street L 36 for a purpose to be presently set forth.
The conduit 34 extends downward into a fluid reservoir 38 containing a fluid ll] therein. A filtering member 52 is secured to the lower end of the conduit 34 in such a manner as to filter fluid 40 prior to entering the inlet conduit 34. The filtering member 62 is preferably concave-convex in shape and may be a metallic screen or sheet of material of such shape that is provided with a plurality of suitable openings. The conduit 34 is connected to the central portion of the filtering member 42, and as clearly shown in Figure 2, the periphery of the member 32 is in engagement with the bottom wall of the reservoir 38.
As shown in Figure 4, the conduit 3G is provided with a flange 46 which is suitably secured to the member 42 as by welding or the like. In addition, a spring clip 46 is provided for retaining the member t2 on the conduit M. The spring clip 4b is substantially U-shaped and is received in the member 42 with the legs 48 thereon extending up into and engaging the sides of the conduit 34. The central portion of the clip M3 is enlarged to a diameter exceeding that of the conduit 34,
so as to engage the member :52 and retain the same on the conduit 3%. It will be understood that the member 42 may either be continuous over the end of the conduit 34, or as in the preferred construction the member 42 may be provided with an opening for receiving the lower end. of the conduit 34 so as to embrace the same snugly,
It is believed that the function of the filtering member 42 will be readily understood. In addition to spacing the lower end of the conduit 34 from the bottom Wall of the reservoir 38, the member 42 in conjunction with the conduit 34 and the street L 36 prevents rotation of the housing I8 so that additional means for preventing rotation of the housing 18 relative to the shaft 22 are not required. As clearly shown in Figure 2, counterclockwise rotation of the pump housing i8 is prevented, it being understood that the bearing !4 is supported upon a rigid frame member 50 and the reservoir 38 is similarly rigidly mounted.
In operation, the blower I and arbor 12 are rotated by means not shown, the arbor I2 in turn rotating the shaft 22 The housing 18 of the pump I6 is held against rotation by the member 42 bearing against the reservoir 38, whereupon, the pump [6 draws fluid 40 through the filtering member 42 and the conduit 34 and forces the same out the conduit 32, which it will be understood extends to the desired place of application.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, claimed as new is:
1. In filtering apparatus, a reservoir and a conduit having its inlet end disposed Within the reservoir and extending toward and terminating what is in spaced relation to one of the walls of the reservoir, a concavo-convex foraminous member having a central opening that receives the conduit therethrough adjacent the inlet end of the latter and an external stop ring on the conduit engaging the member, the outer periphery of the member engaging said one wall of the reservoir, and a U-shaped spring clip received within the member and disposed between inlet end of the conduit and said one wall of the reservoir removably securing the conduit and the member.
2. For use in an air conditioning system including a pump, a water intake conduit adapted to be connected at one end to the pump, a water filtering means and means attaching said filtering means to the inlet end of said conduit, said filtering means comprising a concavo-convex foraminous member having a central opening, the inlet end of said conduit projecting through said central opening, a collar on said conduit engaging the surface of said foraminous member to limit the projection of the conduit through said central opening, a spring clip received within said inlet end of said conduit and clamping said foraminous member in engagement with said collar.
