UIT STAT ATENT OFFICE BINDING TURNING MACHINE AS EMPLOYED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FOOTWEAR Application October 21, 1952, Serial No. 315,982
7 Claims. (01. 12-55) This invention has reference to improvements relating to binding turning machines as employed in the manufacture of footwear and is concerned particularly with binding turning machines for the said purpose which are well known in the footwear industry as rotary French cord binding machines.
In connection with the manufacture ,of footwear it is known practice to stitch one portion of a length of binding to the outer surface of the marginal portion bounding the upper and subsequently to fold the other portion of the binding of the said upper edge so as to overlie the inner marginal portions bounding the edge of the upper and to apply pressure to the inner portion of the binding so as to cause this section to be fixed to the shoe through the agency of an applied adhesive.
Rotary French cord binding machines as constructed heretofore, however, have required the use of a binding which has been pre-coated on the inner surface of that section of the binding which is to constitute the outer section of the binding when folded over and applied to an upper, with an adhesive of a thermo-plastic type and the machines have incorporated an electrical heating means for occasioning a softening of the adhesive prior to the passage of the binding through the machine for the turning over and pressure applying processes.
There is also known in the footwear industry a machine for French binding which incorporates a reciprocating or rocker mechanism for effecting a turning over of the binding together with provision for feeding the heated adhesive into the binding as it is passed through the machine immediately prior to the subjection of the binding to the action of the reciprocating or rocker turn over mechanism, the control of the feed of the adhesive being determined by an electromagnetically operated valve mechanism the action of which is governed by a knee control actuable by the operator.
The rotary French cord binding machine aforesaid, hereinafter referred to as the rotary binding machine, is efficient in use, but as employed heretofore requires, as has been stated, the use of binding pro-coated with a thermo-plastic adhesive whilst the French cord binding machine last mentioned requires the operation of separate controls for governing the adhesive'feed and for effecting the starting and stopping of the machine.
The present invention has for its object to provide a rotary binding machine which retains theefiiciency of the rotary binding machine as at present in use, but which does not require the use of a binding which has been pre-coated with an adhesive and which permits of the feeding of the adhesive on to the binding immediately prior to the performance of the turning over operation and in which the control of the feeding of the adhesive and the stopping and starting of the machine are performed by the actuation of a common control.
Accordingly, the invention consists of a rotary binding machine for use in the manufacture of footwear which is characterised in that means is provided for feeding adhesive into the binding immediately prior to the passage of the work beneath the turnover and pressure applying roller and in that the flow of the adhesive is controlled by a valve mechanism which is associated with the starting and stopping control in a manner such that the actuation by the operator of the said control simultaneously occasions the actuating of the valve mechanism aforesaid for starting and stopping the feed of the adhesive.
The invention also resides in a rotary binding machine constructed, arranged and adapted'for use substantially as will be described hereinafter.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings which illustrate the invention in its application to a machine manufactured according to the designs of the Rotary Machine Company of Lynn, Massachusetts, United States of America, and which is well known in the footwear industry both in the United States of America and in the United Kingdom as the rotary binding machine.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View from the front illustrating a rotary binding machine having the invention associated therewith,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View partly in section and partly in elevation looking fromv the driving end of the machine as illustrated in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in section showing part of the adhesive feeding mechanism detached from the machine,
Figure 4 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the part of the adhesive feeding mechanism seen in Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of the lower portion of the adhesive feeding mechanism as seen in Figures 3 and 4. i
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate similarparts in the several views,
As the rotary binding machine depicted in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings is of well known construction and is the subject of United States Patents Nos. 1,743,192 and 1,743,286, dated January 14, 1930, No. 1,907,243, dated May 2, 1933, and No. 1,925,205, dated September 5, 1933, it is not necessary for the purposes of this invention to describe in detail the mechanism and manner of operation of the said machine.
According to the present invention, however, there is supported from the displaceable lower pressure exerting assembly of the machine depicted generally by the reference letter A, a reservoir I for an adhesive of a known type, referred to in the industry as a hot melt adhesive.
Disposed within the interior of the reservoir I0 is a vertically disposed cylinder II the lower portion of the wall of which is provided with a plurality of inlet ports I I I which place the lower end of the cylinder II in communication with a well IOI formed at one end of the reservoir I0.
Reciprocally mounted within the cylinder I I is a plunger I2 which is associated with a strap I2I and an eccentric I3, said eccentric I3 being fixed to the inner end of a shaft I4 which is rotatably mounted in bearings provided in the inner end wall of the reservoir Ill.
The throw of the eccentric I3 is arranged so that on the suction stroke the end of the plunger I2 is raised clear of the ports III aforesaid and so that on the pressure stroke the plunger I2 first closes the said ports III and then performs the pressure stroke to force from the bottom of the cylinder II the adhesive contained therein.
It will be understood that the well IIlI in conjunction with the ports III ensures the delivery of a constant volume of adhesive at each pressure stroke of the plunger I2.
Fixed on the outwardly disposed portion of the shaft I4 is a pulley MI which is adapted to be driven from the main shaft I5 of the machine through the medium of a rubber belt I6.
The outlet from the cylinder II communicates by way of a tap I II and a conduit IT with a feed chamber I8 the lower end of which in turn is in communication with a feed pipe I9 the orifice I9I of which is located immediately in advance of the turnover and pressure applying roller 20.
Located within the feed chamber I8 is a horizontally disposed valve plug 2I for controlling communication between the upper portion of the feed chamber I8 and the feed pipe I9.
The valve plug 2| is provided with an outwardly projecting portion to which is fixed the lower end of a crank 22 the upper end of which has anchored thereto one end of a cable 23 of a flexible cable control, the other end of which is anchored to the end of a crank arm 24 fixed on the clutch operating shaft 25 adjacent to the clutch end of the machine as is clearly seen in Figure 2.
The crank arm 24 is connected also to the upper end of a control chain 26 the lower end of which is connected to the clutch controlpedal 2?.
The main shaft I5 is adapted to be connected to a power source such as an electric motor, not shown, by means of the standard clutch designated generally by the reference figure 33, said clutch being operated as is customary by the pedal 21 aforesaid.
Associated with the feed chamber I8 is an electric heating element 28 which serves to heat by conduction the feed chamber I8, the feed pipe I9 and the parts adjacent thereto.
Associated with the bottom of the reservoir I0 is an electric heating element 29 which main- 4 tains the adhesive in the reservoir ID at the required state of fluidity.
The flexible control cable 23 is arranged so that when the clutch control pedal 2'! is actuated the valve plug 2I is operated to move to the open position when the said pedal 2! is operated to engage the clutch I3 and to move to the closed position when the pedal 21 is operated or permitted to disengage the clutch I3.
The displacement of the lower pressure exerting assembly A for permitting of the insertion of the work is controlled by a pedal 2II in accordance with normal practice.
In operation the operator first ensures that the electric heating elements 28 and 29 are in action and have raised the contents of the reservoir #0 to the required degree of fluidity and heated the feed chamber I8 and feed pipe I9 to a temperature which ensures the fluidity of the adhesive during its passage from the reservoir I0 to the feed orifice I9I.
The operator then actuates the pedal, not shown, which displaces the lower pressure exerting assembly A of the machine so as to permit of the insertion of the leading end of the work and after the insertion of the leading end of the work and the release of the lower pressure exerting assembly A the clutch control pedal is actuated to occasion an engagement of the clutch B. This control operation, in addition to occasioning the engagement of the clutch B through the internally disposed crank arm 24 mounted on the clutch operating shaft 25, exerts a pull on the flexible cable 23 which occasions the opening of a valve plug 2| and consequently allows adhesive to be fed on to the binding by way of the feed orifice I9I immediately prior to the binding being subject to the turnover action of the turnover and pressure applying roller 20.
The tap I'II is employed to control the fiow of adhesive in the conduit I7 and normally is set to permit the desired amount of adhesive to flow through the said conduit I1.
In the event of the tap I'II being shut whilst the machine is in operation there is no overflow of adhesive due to the nature of the pump associated with the reservoir I0.
It should be pointed out that the plunger I2 does not suck back some of the adhesive moved toward the work on its return stroke due to the swan-necked shape of the nozzle I9 through which the adhesive passes and which shape of nozzle is known to prevent a vacuum being created and so prevent sucking back.
It will be appreciated. that a. rotary binding machine in accordance with the invention dispenses with the use of a precoated binding and at the same time permits of the retention of the advantages of the existing rotary binding machine.
It will be appreciated also that the control of the flow of the adhesive is determined by the operation of starting and stopping the machine so that the flow of adhesive is caused to commence with the bringing of the machine into operation and to cease when the machine is stopped, thus making for ease of control.
It will be appreciated further that the use of a rubber belt I6 permits of the displacement of the lower pressure exerting assembly A together with the reservoir I0, feed chamber I8 and feed pipe I9 without risk of dislodgment of the said belt.
