HINGE, INCLUDING A DETACHABLE LEAF Filed July 18, 1950 INVEN TOR.
IRVINE [([MMEL BY Patented Nov. 10, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,658,233 HINGE, INCLUDING A DETACHABLE LEAF Irvine Kimmel, Miami Beach, Fla.
Application July 18, 1950, Serial No. 174,490
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to a hinge including a detachable, movable leaf.
An object of this invention is to provide a hinge which includes a movable leaf which is detachably supported on the anchor leaf in frictional engagement therewith.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hinge which includes a frictionally engaging, movable leaf that is particularly adapted for the support of an awning or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hinge which includes a movable leaf and is particularly adapted for prolonged use exteriorly of a structure, wherein the hinge is subjected to deleterious effects of constant weathering.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hinge in which the anchor leaf and the movable leaf can be speedily and readily assembled and disassembled.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hinge which includes a frictionally engaging, movable leaf, the hinge being simple in structure and relatively cheap to manufacture.
The above and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed description of the invention, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the hinge of the present invention detachably secured to a supporting surface and dependingly carrying an awning or the like;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the hinge shown in Figure 1 supporting an awning or the like at an angle with respect to the supporting surface;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the hinge shown in Figures 1 and 2, with parts broken away; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, there is shown the hinge of the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral l which comprises an anchor leaf ll detachably secured to a vertical supporting surface l2 and a movable leaf l3 dependingly carrying an awning or the like, generally designated by the reference numeral M, the movable leaf l3 being axially received and supported in a guideway l5 provided in the anchor leaf H for section. Disposed contiguous to the other end of the plate I 6 and having its lower end fixedly se-- cured thereto is a verticallydisposed flange H which is adapted to be disposed in abutting rela-- tion with respect to thesupporting surface 12..
Extending transversely through the flange 11' and threadedly engaging the supporting surface- I2 is a securing element, generally designated by the reference numeral l8 and illustrated as a.- wood screw. Disposed transversely of the upper end of the flange I1 and secured thereto is a ledge I9 which cooperates with the adjacent portion of the supporting surface l2 to provide a channelway 20 for the reception of a sealing compound 2! to prevent rain from flowing between the abutting faces of the flange I1 and the supporting surface l2. As clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the ledge I9 includes a horizontally disposed leg 22 having one end fixedly secured to the upper end of the flange l1 and a vertically disposed leg 23 spaced from the vertical supporting surface l2, and having its lower end fixedly secured to the other end of the horizontally disposed leg 22.
The movable leaf includes an L-shaped bracket generally indicated by the reference numeral 29, the bracket embodying a long leg 3| and a short leg 30 arranged perpendicularly with respect to the leg 3|, the short leg 30 having one end connected to one end of the leg 3|. An open ended sleeve 25 is arranged transversely of the long leg 3| and is secured to the short leg 30 adjacent the other end of the latter. The sleeve 25 is provided with a slit 26 extending throughout its length and forming separated ends 21, 28 the slit and separated ends being remote from the long leg 3|. The long leg 3| of the bracket 29 is spaced from the sleeve 25 and forms a space for receiving the one end of the plate It when the movable leaf is rotated in a direction to move the long leg 3| of its bracket 29 away from the plate It. From the foregoing, it is readily apparent that the degree of rotation of the movable leaf l3 with respect to the anchor leaf II is determined by the disposition of the short leg '30 with respect to the tip of the arcuately bent portion l5.
In actual use, the anchor leaf H can be speed-- 11y secured to the supporting surface I! by means of the securing elements It, and the movable leaf I: can be secured at the desired location on the awning I4, whereupon the sleeve 25 of the movable leaf l3 can be axially inserted within the guideway 15 for support therein and for the desired limited rotary movement. When it is desired to disassemble the device, it is merely necessary to axially move the sleeve 25 with respect to the guideway l5 toxthereby bring the movable leaf out of 'itssupported position.
The novel hinge of the present invention provides a relatively simple structure for the attachment of an awning or: the like-tothesupporting surface. It is to be noted that the provision of the ledge I9 assures a relativelwwaterproof seal between the flange ILand the supporting surface II. It is to be further noted that the arcuately bent end of the plate [6 provides a hood for the movable leaf I3 to thereby protect -.the"latter=from thewdeleterious efiects of prolonged use exteriorly of-abuilding.
Although only oneembodiment of the hinge of the present inventionhasbeen described, it-is .readilyapparent-that .mnnerous modifications 1 can- :be; made without departing from the spirit of i the inventionras set forth in .theappended claims.
What I claimis:
l. A hinge comprising an anchor leaf embody-. inga; flat-plate having a portion. adjacent one end arcuately .-bent-.;downwardly and inwardly with its"; tip? spaced from'the plate to provide ra transversely-disposed guideway of circular cross sectionpmeansf on theother end of said plate for securement to a vertical supporting surface; and a-movable; leaf supported in; said guideway for rotarymovement, said movableleaf including. an L-shapedbracket having along leg" and a; short leg arranged perpendicularly with respect. to. the longleg. said short'leghaving oneend connected toone end of the'longleggan open-endedsleeve arranged transversely of the long leg and secured tot-he short leg adjacent the other :end of the latter,- there being'a slit in said'sleeve; extending throughout its entire length and forming separated-ends, the slit and; separated endsbeing vremote from-the long leg-said sleeve extending --axially through and rotatablysupported in said .-guideway; andmeans on the long leg adjacent the -transversely'disposed guideway of circular cross section, a flange projecting perpendicularly from ime other end of said plate for securement to a -vertical-supportingsurface, said flange being on 15 aaz movable leaf supported in said guideway for the side of said plate opposite said guideway, and
rotary movement, said movable leaf including an L-shaped bracket having a long leg and a short leg arranged perpendicularly with respect to the long leg, said short leg "having one end connected to -one -end :of the long leg, an open ended sleeve arranged transversely of the longleg and secured to the short leg adjacent the other end of the latter, therebeing-aslit in said sleeve extending .25.
aratedends, the -slit-and separated ends being throughout its entire length and forming sepremote from the long leg, said sleeve extending l axially through and rotatably supported in said guideway, and means on the long leg adjacent the other end-thereof forattachment to an awning, the long leg of said bracketbeing spaced from said-sleeve:and forming a space for receiving the :said tip of said plate-when said movable leaf is rotated in a direction tomove the long leg of its bracket away from said plate.
