This invention relates to toys and more particularly to pull or push toys.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a toy which may be made in the representation of any suitable character or figure and which when moved in a straight line, alternately in opposite directions, is caused to create the illusion of the toy device alternately reversing positions without actually turning around, thereby providing a high degree of amusement and interest.

Another object of this invention is to provide a pull or push toy in the representation of any suitable character or figure having a single body portion and a pair of integral oppositely positioned heads pivotally mounted on the body so that either of the heads may be alternately exposed to view, the heads combining with the body portion to form a figure facing first in one direction and then in the opposite direction.

Another object of this invention is to provide a pull or push toy wherein the direction of the toy character may be alternately reversed without actually turning the same around.

Other objects will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of my toy with the head positioned in one direction.

Fig. 2 is a similar view but with the parts shifted rearwardly and showing the opposite head in exposed position and in a direction reverse to that of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an end elevational view taken on lines 3--3 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, my invention com-' prises a base having a pair of spaced side walls 12 and I4 symmetrically formed with respect to the transverse axes of-the base, so that the forward and rearward ends of the walls are exactly alike in appearance. The side Walls support a shaft l6 which pivotally supports a rocking member, indicated generally by the numeral l8. The said rocking member comprises two

26 and 22 integrally formed with an intermediate portion 24, the heads being oppositely directed and symmetrically disposed with respect to the shaft I6 and intermediate portion 24.

Rested on the base I0 is a slidable member generally indicated at 26 which comprises a base 28 and a vertical member 36 slotted as at 32, the member 30 being positioned between the side wall l2 and the rocking member I8. A pin 34 mounted on the side of the intermediate portion 24 of the rocking member [8 engages in the slot 32. Secured to one end of the slidable member 26 is a rod 36 which serves as a means for pulling or pushing the toy and also to move the member 26 on the base [0. As will be seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the

20 and 22 are identical in configuration, each head in this instance being in the caricature of a Scotch terrier. Preferably, the heads are somewhat grotesquely formed so that certain features thereof may be exaggerated or otherwise altered in order that they may be used advantageously to depict or represent another portion of the body. For example, in the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the portion 20a of the head 20 which in Fig. 1 corresponds to the ears of the caricature, in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, corresponds to the tail of the caricature. Correspondingly, the portion 22a which in Fig. 1 corresponds to a tail, in Fig. 2 corresponds to cars. The side walls [2 and I4 are shaped in outline configuration so that in whichever position the rocking member i8 is disposed, the walls will form the body of the character to combine with the exposed portion (head and tail) of the rocking member to form a complete character. The side walls may be additionally painted or formed in relief to carry out this effect.

The slidable member 26 is used to rock the rocking member [8 from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2 and vice versa. When the slidable member 26 is pulled in the direction of the arrow, to the left or forwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, the slotted member 36 engaging the pin 34 will cause the rocking member I8 to pivot clockwise to be positioned as shown therein. However, when the slidable member 26 is pushed in the direction of the arrow rearwardly, or to the right, as shown in Fig. 2, the slotted member 30 engaging the pin 34 will cause the rocking member I8 to be rocked counter-clockwise about its pivot to assume the position shown wherein the caricature faces in an opposite direction.

While the toy is shown in the configuration or representation of a Scotch terrier, it will be understood that this is only for purposes of illustration and that the invention is equally applicable to other characters and figures. It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A toy comprising a base member and side walls, wheels on said base, a rockable member pivotally mounted between said side walls, said rockable member bearing two oppositely positioned heads arranged substantially symmetrically relative to the pivotal axis thereof, a slidable member arranged for straight linear movement in alternate directions and engageable with said rockable member to move the same to present alternately to view one of said heads, and means connected to said slideable member for pulling and/or pushing said toy and simultaneously to position one of the heads in a forward direction if said toy is pulled and to position the other head in a forward direction if the toy is, pushed.

A toy comprising a base member and side walls, wheels on said base, a rockable member pivotally mounted between said side walls, said rockable member bearing two oppositely positioned heads and having a pin member, a slidable member having a slotted portion for engagement with said pin member so as to move said rockable member to present alternately one of said heads and thereby effect alternate reversals in the direction assumed by said toy without reversing the position of said base member and side walls, and

means connected to said slideable member for pulling and/0r pushing said toy and simultaneously to position one of the heads in a forward direction if said toy is pulled and to position the other head in a forward direction if the toy is BERNARD GOLDFARB.
