Oct. 20, 1953 Tn PH|LS LAMP HAVING A SLIDABLE SCREEN TO EXPOSE ONE OR THE OTHER OF TWO DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES Filed Aug. 6, 1952 I N V EN TOR 0 @1f-@mm Alf/J Patented Oct. 20, 1953 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE LAMP HAVING A SLIDABLE SCREEN TO EX- POSE ONE OR THE OTHER OF TWO DIF- FERENT LIGHT SOURCES This invention relates to electric lamps and more particularly to a combination fog light Iand lamp adapted to be used aboard ships.
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide a combination fog light and lamp which includes novel means for alternately illuminating a yellow fog bulb and an ordinary frosted white bulb depending upon whether it is desired to utilize the invention as ra fog light or as a reading lamp.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combination fog light and lamp which embody novel means for alternately screening a fog light and `an ordinary lamp depending upon whether it is desired to utilize the invention as a fog light aboard ships or alternately as an ordinary reading lamp aboard ship.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a combination fog light and lamp which includes novel means for permitting a pair of closely spaced bulbs to be screwed into their respective sockets without mutual interference.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a combination fog light and lamp which includes an upstanding rectangular casing having at the top a yellow fog bulb and at the bottom an ordinary frosted bulb and a rectangular screen movable ,along the outside of the casing from top to bottom adapted to alternately illuminate and reveal a fog light or an ordinary bulb, ldepending upon Vthe particular purpose it is desired to use the invention for.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combination fog light land lamp of the above type which is of simplified construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate, compact and highly efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combination fog light and lamp embodying the features of the.
line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the interior construction thereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2 and showin-g the internal arrangement of the parts and Fig. 4 is a circuit diagram showing the means for alternately supplying current to the fog lightA land the lamp.
Referring now in detail to the figures and in 'f the practice of my invention, there is shown a combination fog light and lamp, referred to collectively as I0, consisting of a casing Il made up of substantially square top Iand bottom parts I2 and I3 connected at their corners by integrally formed vertical pillars III and I5. The corners of the top and bottom parts I2 and I3 and the outer sides of the vertical pillars I4 and I5 are rounded so as not to present any sharp edges when handling. The vertical pillar I5 is identical in shape with the vertical pillars I4 except that one side is wider for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The top and bottom parts I2 and I3 'are hollow, presenting inner top and bottom parts I6 and Il for a `purpose to be hereinafter described.
The side edges-of the top and bottom parts I2 and I3 are provided with rectangular recesses I8 ladapted to receive the walls of transparent glass I9 secured thereto by rectangular brackets 20 asclearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. yOne of the brackets 20 at the top and a corresponding bracket `at the bottom are provided with lugs 2| for a purpose to be herein-after described.
In the further practice of my invention, I pro- 4vide a screen '22 of opaque material, preferably plastic, surrounding the casing II on four Isides and'y extending substantially one-half the length thereof and adapted to slide along the vertical pillars I4 and I5 from top to bottom of the case ing limited at the extreme positions by the lugs 2| previously referred to. It should be obvious that the screen 22 when in either extreme position will act as a screen for either the top of lower half of the casing I I.
A conventional electric bulb socket 23 is 1ocated within the casing II at the bottom thereof and is rotatably secured to the upperside of the inner bottom I'I by means of a clamp 24 surrounding saidsocket and riding on a shaft 25 located in a pair of bearings 26 rigidly secured to the inner bottom I1 in conventional manner..
An ordinary frosted, white bulb 21 is screwed into the socket 23. screwed into a socket 29 similarly rotatably mounted by means of a clamp 3l) surrounding the socket `29 and riding on a second shaft 3| located in a second pair of bearings 32 rigidly secured to the lower surface of the inner top I6 in conventional manner. It should be obvious that uponA removing the clamps 26 and the Wall I9 adjacent the shafts 3| :and 25 that either of the sockets 23 or '29 may be rotated outwardly so as to permit the unscrewing of either the bulb 21 or the bulb 28 Without interfering with the other bulb.
YThe bulbs 21 and 28 are connected in parallel A yellow bulb 28 is likewise;
to a source of power not shown by means of wires 33 and male plug 34, each of the parallel circuits having a micro-switch 35 whereby to permit alternate lighting of the bulbs 2T and 28.
The vertical pillar l5 is provided at the middle 5 thereof on the inner sides with a shoulder 36 integrally formed therein and adapted to receive the microswitc'lie's `35"in xed relationship as clearly shown in Fig`.3.` The shoulder' Bty is further provided with horizontal holes 3l' and 38 10 located one beneath the other and adapted to" receive the spring indented buttonssD asf clearly: shown in Fig. 3. central portion of said shoulder having enlarged holes surrounding said first mentioned holes, a pair of springs located within said enlarged holes, said buttons consisting of a head which normally extends outward of the shoulder, a shoulder adjacent said head and located within said enlarged holes and engageable with said spring, and a central shaft extending inwardly of the shoulder, a pair of activating levers extending from said micro-switches and terminating adjacent said shafts of said buttons, said shafts being normally urged out of engagement with said levers by said springs, a first electric bulb located interiorly of said casing at the top thereof, a second electric bulb located interiorly of said casing at the bottom thereof, each of said bulbs being electrically connected in parallel with each other and in series with one of said micro-switches, said microswitches and said bulbs being electrically connected with a source of power, and a screen of opaque material surrounding said casing on four sides and extending substantially one-half the vertical length thereof, said screen being adapted to slide from top to bottom of said casing and further adapted to alternately engage the head able brackets adapted to secure said glass walls to said top and bottom within said recesses, a first pair of bearings rigidly secured to the upper surface of said bottom at one side thereof and interiorly of said casing, a first shaft located within said rst bearings, a rst clamp having holes at the ends thereof adapted to rotate upon said shaft, a socket positioned within said first clamp and adapted to receive a bulb, a rst bulb screwed into said first socket, a second pair of bearings rigidly secured to the lower surface of said top at one side thereof and interiorly of said casing, a second shaft located within said secondV bearings, a second clamp having holes at the ends thereof adapted to rotate upon said shaft, a second socket positioned wtihin said second clamp and adapted to reecive a second bulb, a second bulb screwed into said second socket, a screen of opaque material surrounding said casing on four sides and extending substantially one-half the vertical length thereof, said screen being further adapted to slide from top to bottom of said casing, and means operable by said screen for alternately illuminating said first and secondbulbs.
5. A combination fog light and lamp comprising an upstanding casing including substantially square top and bottom parts, vertical pillars, connecting said top and bottom parts at the four corners thereof, the four edges of said top and bottom parts having narrow rectangular recesses between said vertical pillars, for rectangular glass walls adapted to rest in said recesses between said vertical pillars and intermediate said top and bottom parts, said walls extending substantially the length of said casing, eight brackets adapted to secure said glass walls to said top and bottom parts within said recesses, means for releasably securing said brackets to said top and bottom parts, one of said pillars being provided at the middle thereof with an inwardly extending shoulder, a pair of micro-switches rigidly secured to saidv shoulder at the top and bottom thereof, said pillar and said shoulder having a pair of horizontal holes connecting the interior of said cas- -ing with the exterior, said holes being located one above the other in vertical spaced relationship, apair of buttons located within said holes, said shoulder at the center interior thereof having enlarged holes surrounding said rst mentioned holes, a pair of helical springs located Within said enlarged holes, said buttons each consisting of a head which normally extends outward of the casing, an enlarged shoulder adjacent said head and located within said enlarged holes and engageable with said spring, and a central shaft extending inwardly of said shoulder adjacent said head to communicate with the interior of said casing, a pair of activating levers pivotally mounted within said micro-switches and extending therefrom, said levers terminating adjacent said shafts, said shafts being normaly engaged by said springs and urged out of engagement with said levers, a first pair of bearings rigidly secured to the upper surface of said bottom at one side thereof and interiorly of said casing, a first shaft located within said rst bearings, a U-shaped clamp having holes at'the ends thereof adapted to rotate upon said shaft, a iirst bulb socket resiliently secured within said first clamp, a first bulb screwed into said socket, a second pair of bearings rigidly secured to the lower surface of said top at one side thereof and interiorly of said casing, a second shaft located Within said bearings, a second U-shaped clamp having holes at the ends adapted to rotate upon said shaft, a second bulb socket resiliently secured within said second clamp, a second bulb screwed into said socket, each of said bulb sockets being connected in parallel to a source of power by means of insulated wires and a male plug, said micro-switches being connected in series with said sockets, and a screen of opaque material surrounding said casing on four sides and extending substantially one-half the vertical length thereof, said screen being adapted to slide from top to bottom of said casing and further adapted to alternately engage the spring urged head of one of said buttons when in an up position so as to open the uppermost micro-switch, and the spring urged head of the other of said buttons when in a down position so as to open the lowermost micro-switch whereby toalternately illuminate said rst and second bulbs while screening the other.
