Description
Oct. 20, 1953 G. D. GORMAN PEN OR PENCIL CLIP Filed June 2, 1952 Patented Oct. 20,- 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved cap and retainer clip for a fountain pen and the like.
Broadly an object of this invention is to provide a simple, easily constructed but rugged pen cap and clip.
A further object of this invention is to provide a clip and cap which is adapted for convenient, one hand operation.
A feature of this invention is the placing of a plunger means on the side of the cap away from the clip bar to be actuated to move the clip bar away from the cap barrel.
A still further feature of this invention i the mounting of the plunger actuating end within the limit of the dimensions of the cap barrel to avoid Wear on the garment or unintentional operation by accidental pressure.
Other objects, features and advantages of this invention will appear from consideration of the accompanying drawings, specification and claims. Fig. 1 in the drawing is a sketch on a large scale, in elevation, of a pen cap in place on an associated barrel of a pen with the clip in a nongripping position.
Fig. 2 is a similar sketch in elevation of the cap and clip with the plunger in actuated position forcing the clip free of the cap for easy mounting on a hem of a pocket.
In the drawings a clip member I is mounted on a cap C to retain a resilient clip bar 2 in contact with the pen cap exerting pressure thereon through a bulbous tip 6. The clip is retained on the cap by a collar 1 secured about the cap in any well known manner. Alternatively it is contemplated to attach the clip over the end 8 in well known manner.
The side of the cap opposite to the clip is hollowed out as between points l and II for easy one finger operation of a tip of a plunger member 9. This member 9' connects a plunger knob 4 to a medial portion or point of the clip bar 2 in any well known manner. The construction may all be formed and assembled in well known manner or steps commonly employed for forming resilient metal members or the like. Where the plunger 9 is made to go directly through the barrel (whether solid or hollow) a metal tubing of brass or the like may be provided to guide or retain the rod 9 and to minimize wear on the softer material of the barrel.
In use the pen or related device is inserted into a pocket while exertin finger pressure on the knob 4 to cause the tip 6 to clear the pocket hem. Then release of the hand from the pen causes the resilient clip bar 2 to spring back against the barrel engaging the tip 6 firmly with the barrel or an interposed garment portion.
What I claim is:
1. A clip and cap combination for use with a fountain pen or the like, comprising a barrel member, a notch in the barrel side wall, a resilient bar disposed along the barrel member on a side away from the notch, means at one end of the resilient bar to secure the bar to the cap, and an actuating member connected medially to the bar to force it away from the barrel at its free end, said actuating member extending to the oppositeside of the barrel and having a contact end disposed within the notch to be retained within the confines of the dimensions of the barrel.
2. A clip means as in claim 1 further characterized in that the actuating member is a bar eX- tending transversely through the barrel.
GEORGE D. GORMAN.
