1- Claim. 1
My invention relates to fish scaling devices. An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character which consists of scaling means having toothed means integrally formed at the outer peripheral surface thereof, which, when subjected to rotation, will engage the free ends of the scales on the body of a fish.
Another object of my invention is to provide scaling means of the aforementioned character equipped with reduced shank means so that the same may be attached to a prime mover.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character being of tubular formation so as to enable one to attach the same to the extension shaft of a prime mover.
A still further object of my invention is to provide in combination a prime mover, switch means for operating the said prime mover, and flexible shaft means interconnecting the said prime mover to scaling means.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the aforementioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, quite practical for the uses for which it is purported to be used, and an item of such simple elemental construction as to warrant economical manufacture thereof in quantity production.
Other objects, ancillary uses, advantages and features inherent in my invention will become apparent from an examination of the accompanying drawings, bearing further elucidation in the ensuing description, wherein like symbols designate like parts, and in which;
Fig. 1 is a front view of my invention showing a prime mover, a scaling means, and a flexible shaft connection intermediately between the said prime mover and the said scaling means.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one form of the scaling means.
Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary and enlarged crosssectional view illustrating the scaling tooth formation, comprising an important feature of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a slightly modified form of my invention shown directly attached to the extension shaft of a prime mover.
Fig. 6 is an end view of the modified scaling means illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to the various figures, my invention is generally designated 1, and consists of a prime mover 8, provided with means for connecting the same to an available outlet, or electrical source of supply, not shown. The said prime mover is provided with switch means II for setting into operation the sealing means having a body portion designated l1, and the reduced extension l8.
The prime mover 8 may be fastened on a support 9 by means of screws or fastenings ID as shown. The said prime mover 8 has a rotor equipped with an extension shaft 12 to which a coupling l3, by virtue of set screws I4, will secure the flexible shaft l5 to the extension shaft I2. The other end of the flexible shaft I5 is rotatably secured within a handle 16 and attaches to a reduced extension l8 of the scaling means l1.
An important feature of the scaling means I! is its cylindrical formation whereby scaling teeth 20 are formed integrally therewith by punching or chiseling the material from which the sealing; means I! is formed; the said teeth 20 being pref erably arranged in rows and in transverse staggered relationship.
It is to be noted that when the teeth 20 are formed, a space or a scale ejecting pocket 2| results which permits the teeth 20, when rapidly subjected to rotation over the body IQ of a fish,. to grab the free edges of the scales and dislodge.-
them. The pocket portions 2| force the scales to be curled upwardly, hence preventing adherence of the said scales to the scaling element impeding clogging or fouling thereof.
The modified form of my invention illustrated in figures 5 and 6, designated 25, is provided with scaling teeth 21 similar to the scaling teeth 20 of the element ll. However, this form is made of seamless steel tubing so that its bore 26 will fit over an extension shaft 24 of a prime mover 22. A set screw 28 may be utilized to secure element 25 rigidly to the shaft extension 24. The prime mover or motor 22 may be secured by cap screws 23 or any other suitable fastenings.
The elements I! and 25 may be made of cold rolled steel so that the same may be case-hardened, thus providing teeth 20 or 21 to withstand the rough scaling operation without unduly wearing down the said teeth.
A fish I9 is held in the hand and brought in contact with the peripherally formed teeth 20 or 21 of the sealing means; the fish being positioned so that the free edges of the scales thereof are subjected to engagement by the teeth 20 or 21 of the scaling means, which obviously is rotated in a direction intended to lift the free edges of the scales, thus resulting in removal of the scales from the fish.
Although I have herein described rather suc- 'cinctly the nature and use of my invention so that persons skilled in the art will have no difficulty apprising themselves of the teachings thereof and, inasmuch as the disclosure is susceptible of various alterations, modifications, and improvements, I hereby reserve the right to all modifications, alterations, and improvements falling within the scope and spirit of my invention, as well as any modifications that are embraced suggestively in the accompanying drawings, and any that may come within the purview of the foregoing description; my invention to be limited only by the appended claim.
Having thus disclosed and revealed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Fish scaling means, comprising a prime mover provided with a rotor shaft extension, a rotatable scaling element being provided with a body por- 20 4 tion, flexible shaft means interconnecting the said rotor shaft extension and the said scaling element, handle means secured rotatably on the said flexible shaft means adjacent the said scaling element, and a multiplicity of toothed portions arranged in staggered rows and formed integrally with the said body portion and disposed at right angles to the peripheral portion of the said body portion defining scale ejecting pocket portions at the roots of the said toothed portions.
